If you ask me, this is the one thing fundie girls have going for them. Modern American teenagers are an embarrassment to society and to the future of our country. While I don't agree in several ways with how many fundie families raise their kids, at least they are not influenced by the dumbed down culture that exists now. And its not just fundies, there are a lot of smart teens that take life seriously who have nothing to do with a fundamentalist religion. I commend any youth who acts respectfully, intelligent, mature and who doesn't just follow the mind numbing typical teen crowd.

That's a gross generalization. I see teens in and out of my house who are trying to be TOO grown up--caring for younger siblings while parents cobble together 2 or 3 jobs each, who are trying to work and stay on the honor roll because the folks can't earn enough to make things like dances happen. Not all kids are out doing jackass stuff. It really isn't their fault that their education is too dumbed down for words or that society & the ebil media only show the stupidity.

I find the QF/P girls to be an EMBARRASSMENT and I'm a Christian! The Maxwell's daughter is what? 30??? And she sits at home waiting for Daddy to let her marry? Honestly? In the 21st Century?? That doesn't embarrass you? Or that QF/P girls are trying to accept teachings that take away their status as independent adult and most are not fighting it?? That's a HUGE embarrassment. Girls who are proud of being scared of everything under the sun?? Girls who repent for thinking a boy is cute? Girls who feel somehow responsible for guys being sexually minded?????? Please!

Give me the guy with the green hair who picks his little brother up at day care and sees him safely home and his sister with the piercings who can care for her disabled sibling, hold down a part-time job and still make good grades. Yes, there are BAD, EMBARRASSING kids out there in any place at any time. But don't give these girls Halos because they where clothes that instantly bring attention to them (albeit for their so-called modesty) or who refuse to "take a job away from a man who needs it." We've come way too far for that.

END of RANT

Whoa! I didn't give fundies a pass on everything they do. I only said that I respect the fact that they are usually mature, well behaved, teens. And I didn't limit that to just fundies. As I said, there are everyday families that have the same aspects of well behaved, tolerable teenagers.

Yes its embarrassing that fundie girls are still living with their parents at 30 and that they are made to believe they are less than a man. But that wasn't the topic. I'm talking about a gradual lack of maturity in our youth from generation to generation. Not every youth is this way, but I believe its a majority. And fundie youth are generally more mature. That's my only point.

Hmmm, let's see. I passed notes in high school and listened to popular music, otherwise I didn't do much of the other stuff. I'm definitely NOT fundie/ATI. I was and still am a nerd.

OK, so name some things you did that the Duggar girls don't.

I'd much rather teenagers act like teenagers while they ARE teenagers. There are a lot of poeple who act like teenagers into their 40s..... don't condemn a teenager acting like a teenagers while a teenager, condemn the 40 year old that acts like one. The point of this thread was to comment on why the fundie teenage girls seem like they are much older than teenagers, not to condemn teenagers.

Have you seen the people who were forced to act like adults when they were teens... when they get older? Many of them regress because they feel they missed out of something vital.

As for the SAHD..... it is so sad that they skipped teenagerhood, but aren't allowed to complete the journey to adulthood by becoming financially independent and move out. What will they do if Daddy dies before they get married?

as a pocket protector carrying nerd/member of the AV club/I did not do a lot of stuff on that list but I did read everything - even things that were not "wholesome" or "godly" without censorship. I worked and kept the money I made instead of "lending" it to my parents. I did not have to look after my younger sibs (there were only 2 others so no need to slave). I went to university. I travelled to interesting places just for enjoyment - not to any kind of mission, I ate no tattertots. I wore pants. I listened to great music that often had a beat that you could dance to. All in all a better deal than most of the j slaves life I think.

edited to try and fix the big blank spot where my post should be - will see if it worked

I don't think fundie teens are "more mature" - I think they behave in ways that make their parent's generation feel comfortable. Instead of pushing the boundaries to figure out who they are, they're clones of who their parents want them to be. What do fundie teens *do*? It's not like they're out there running their own successful businesses or graduating from college early or going on humanitarian trips - most of the fundie boys work for Daddy or "intern" for Doug Phillips (except for Lawson Bates, I guess). Girls stay home doing Suzy Homemaker stuff. Big whoop. That's not maturity, that's stagnation.

I was, in most ways, a "model" teenager. Dressed the way that pleased my mom, didn't date, stayed home, did everything I was told. However, I was absolutely miserable on the inside - I was severely depressed and contemplated suicide, because I *knew* I wasn't free. I hated following the rules, looking "perfect," being held to a standard I wasn't mature enough to handle. But I didn't think I had a choice. You hear the verse about stoning rebellious children enough, and you toe the line.

I still had to grow up - it took me several years of my 20s to do that - to establish healthy boundaries with my parents, to figure out relationships, etc. I wish I had gone through all that in my teens.

This might be sort of off topic, but it made me think of something. I have very, very, very liberal parents, so for me, "pushing the boundaries," meant being super Christian, dressing conservatively, being pro-life, anti-sex before marriage, etc. To a lot of people, I probably looked like a model teenager who was just following the rules, but I came up with all of that on my own. It was my way of rebelling. I'm not trying to suggest that that's the case with fundies because obviously it's not. I just thought it was worth noting that sometimes pushing the boundaries can result in more conservative kids (I'm still more conservative than my parents, although not to the extent that I was in high school).

One of the hallmarks of maturity, IMO, is the ability to critically think for oneself. I find QF/fundie teens to be incredibly immature.

This. Mature is the last word to come to mind when thinking of fundie teens, for this very reason. They are brainwashed drones.

What is your definition of maturity, Jericho?

The teens that I know don't seem less or more mature than kids were when I was young. Of course, my evidence is anecdotal as I'm too lazy to look up evidence like juvenile crime statistics for each decade or teen pregnancy rates.

This is not the first time that I've heard of children from liberal parents rebelling by becoming more conservative.

OK, so name some things you did that the Duggar girls don't.

Went to a public school.

Went to college.

regularly read my dad's porno mags (he preferred the ones with stories)

wore pants regularly (I still hate wearing skirts and dresses)

had premartial sex

converted to another religion as a teenager

had a job outside the home

conceived a child outside of wedlock

married a man who DIDN'T ask for my hand in marriage from my father

My father was always a supporter of feminism. He wanted his 3 daughters to be independent thinkers, able to take care of themselves.

I think in some respects the fundies seem older (knowledge of cooking, knitting, "woman's work" that is usually associated with mothers/grandmothers, etc.) and in other respects they seem emotionally stunted or immature (lack of critical thinking skills, etc.).

Similarly to O Latin, my form of 'rebellion' is following the rules. I don't drink, loathe popular music, study my heart out and spend Friday nights on Free Jinger and book blogs (much to my mother's dismay).
