Bumping to report - the King's Blooming Rose/Joyful Daughters annual conference begins tomorrow. Anyone in or near Kansas City, MO feel like crashing the party??

And, in other SAHD-related news - Kelly Reins has just published the following on her FB page:

Quote

Things I expect of men:

1. Able to mow and edge lawns.
2. Able to fix leaky faucets.
3. Able to paint and replace rotten wood on house.
4. Able to build a sunfish (like my father did)
5. Able to organize maintenance of automobiles.
6. Able to determine if he or the wife is better at organizing finances and to live with the decision.
7. Able to be diplomatic regarding female feelings
8. Able to open jars.
9. And most important, able to guide family and wife regarding Scripture.

PS. Able to properly aim and shoot guns.

Wow, that's quite a list. No wonder she hasn't found anyone yet. (I need an eye rolling emjoi).

What the heck is a sunfish? In this context.

I'm glad my spouse is handy, but I know plenty of marriages where neither is, and they seem to do ok. I can think of far more important things.

I can do 1 and 8.  And since I go to Jiify Lube on a regular basis, I guess I can claim 5 also.

How about 'Able to properly aim and hit the toilet'? That seems like a far more practical skill for a man.

1. Able to mow and edge lawns.  (yes, he and I can both do this, we hire it done and have for years.  He and I both have allergies)
2. Able to fix leaky faucets. (Yes, we both can do this too....).
3. Able to paint and replace rotten wood on house.  (Both can do this too... hire it done)
4. Able to build a sunfish (like my father did)  No idea what this is...
5. Able to organize maintenance of automobiles.  (I do this and he offers reminders.-- When do we need to change the oil? Shall we drop it off together or one of us take our car in? BTW< I believe my single sister changes her own oil, still, but not sure)
6. Able to determine if he or the wife is better at organizing finances and to live with the decision.  ( I manage the finances--husband is happy).
7. Able to be diplomatic regarding female feelings  (Whatever... don't marry an asshole and this will not be an issue.)
8. Able to open jars.  (Google automatic Jar Openers.  Also learn how to use a spoon, dull knife and a jar gripper or jar wrench)
9. And most important, able to guide family and wife regarding Scripture.  (Whatever... that will obviously be in the eye of the beholder/wife. )

PS. Able to properly aim and shoot guns. (He's great on the skeet range or sporting clays... I'm good on a rifle range.  What kind of gun are you talking?)

You know what's funny?  When I am at my parents' house, I ask my brother or father to open jars all the time.  To be fair, though, I'll try like twice before giving up.

However, at my house, I have never had a jar I didn't get open.

Single women living alone don't live some sort of weird, jar-less existence.  You can open jars by yourself.  You just might need to try a few more times.

Have yet to run into a jar yet that I couldn't open. I even kill my own spiders rather than just set the whole place ablaze.

The weird thing is the Reins sisters do seem capable, way more capable than me actually. Remember that septic system replacement post? If you can do that you can definitely open your own damn applesauce.

To be fair, for very large spiders this is a valid option.

There is a tupperware with a heavy candle on top covering the very large spider I found in my bedroom the other night. I can't kill it, but dammit, I don't need a man to either!

I am the spider killer in our household, because my dad was into  etymology when I was a kid, so I was always being shown "cool webs" and "cool spiders" and never have been frightened of them.  I don't love the ugly ones, but am happy enough to kill/flush them as needed. Hubby does not like spiders... but protects me from other things.

Catching and releasing spiders is always an option, too!  I've even escorted a black widow outside before, though I understand that might not be for everyone.  But spiders are at least a million times better than mosquitoes and flies and other creepers. :tw_ant: They need our support!

Opening jars is doable. So is changing a tire, if I must.  But, sorry, the house is coming down if there's a spider unless there's someone with a penis around to remove it.

Ever since I had to get the tarantulas out of the garage, I've been fine relocating everything except black widows.  The get the spray of death.

Honestly, I don't see this list as something extraordinary. I can basically do all these things too, except maybe nr. 3, when it comes to replacing wood. For the jars, we just have a rubber disk with which you can grip the lid firmly, works really well. And for nr. 5, she just asks for being able to organize the maintenance of automobiles, so all you have to do is call some professionals if it's not something you can do yourself.

Do water guns count?

Car maintenance only requires filling an online booking form.

I usually open jars, but my doctor wouldn't be okay with that at the moment.

No one would bat an eye at a single 30ish person in the real world. However in their world, a female has dust on her uterus at 25.
I often think ,too, of what happens to a 50ish never married female in that world. We have yet to see one. Guys tend ot have more freedom. But according fans, the Duggar daughters just lov living a home helping. They never think what happens without the parents.

I will admit trouble opening jars, but my hands are small. Just insert a knife under the jar lid edge and keep going around it until it pops. another trick I heard of was running warm water on the lid.

I'm spending the weekend in Doug Phillips' old stomping grounds in Boerne, Texas.  Which made me think about Lisa Pennington, who lives just up the road in Kerrville.  Lisa is all about homeschooling and keeping her daughters, heck, ALL her kids, at home.   At one point, she said she didn't want to be running an adult day care, at the same time she was keeping all her daughters at home and not encouraging the oldest son to have any life outside the family.  Then, Alicia Faith turned 18 and made her getaway.  Since then, one of the older girls went to nanny for Lisa's sister and the other got a passport(!) and went on a mission trip, IIRC.  I haven't really been following The Pennington Point (Lisa's blog), so don't know if the remaining daughters have been doing more activities away from home. Anyway, perhaps Lisa realized that she risked losing her daughters completely if she didn't loosen the reins, at least a little bit.

Alicia Faith Pennington seems to be thriving. She hasn't set up a meth lab, moved into a crack house or joined ISIS.   Since moving up to the Austin area, she's made a lot of friends, is very active in her church, has a boyfriend, and a job.

ETA: Lisa is still flogging essential oils like there's no tomorrow.
