This is a brilliant question. Same with socks/shoes etc.  If they argue they are women's t-shirts sweatshirts etc, then why can't they argue women's pants? Women's t-shirts are made differently to fit women differently, just like women's pants are made very differently then men's.

personally i'd consider anything in the women's section to be women's clothes and anything in the men's section of the store to be for men. Assuming of course i cared if people wear the "wrong" gender clothing item, and assuming i lacked an understanding of gender fluidity and lgbt rights etc.

If I were a fundie, I'd probably almost exclusively wear dresses. Not because t-shirts are menswear, but because those long denim skirts are hideous.  I don't know where they even find those things, but they are The Worst.

Does Michelle wear socks with her utilitarian, all purpose shoes? The Duggar girls wear shoes that do not require socks.

If I recall properly in Duggarland girls wear white socks and boys black socks. Or was it the Bateses ?

Pretty sure that's duggar. I think that's mostly for practical laundry reasons. Can you imagine matching socks for 20 people if everyone had different types/styles patterns etc? nightmare. If all the socks are the same matching is that much easier. Different colors for boys and girls because lets face it, no one wants to share socks with boys. Though i'm guessing all the boys/girls share between each other if they fit the same size, which is still kinda gross.

I thought they  bought pants from thrift stores and ripped open the inseams and made the skirts.

It has to be like wearing a wool blanket in the summer. Denim was made for men working in the fields. It's thick & heavy & more like canvas. How does that equate into a fashion statement. I remember when jeans became a "thing." I was 13 so it must have been about 1955. I asked my mother to get me a pair & they were lined in plaid flannel!

I searched and didn't see this article here anywhere. Not sure this is the right place for it, but it is an interesting read.

That is interesting. It is the complexity of institutions like that and the many ways they are internally reinforced and policed that make them so difficult to escape. Just look at the FLDS mess. Same problem, different flavor.

While I think all of the logic relating to why they must wear skirts is ridiculous, I also don't understand the "skirts are soooooooo difficult to do anything in" arguments that pop up whenever this topic is discussed. Other than jogging (although I have seen plenty of people doing this in special exercise/jogging skirts), I can't think of anything I do on an average day that would be more difficult in a skirt than in pants, and I consider myself a fairly active person. 

Related to men's clothes vs. women's, I have a (male) friend who was absolutely blown away when I explained to him that women's jeans pretty much always contain a bit of spandex to make them stretchy. He hadn't understood how women could stand to wear tight skinny jeans until I explained this.

Fundies favor calf-length skirts. So, while I agree that I can maintain day-to-day-level mobility in just-at-the-knee-length skirts, calf-length becomes much more difficult.

Recently, I found myself tailing a theif that stole my phone (at a very significant distance because I'm not stupid or suicidal) in a calf-length skirt. The skirt was definitely a hinderance. If he had been remotely violent, I wouldn't have been able to move away fast enough.

And then there's the problem of flashing people in above-the-knee skirts. I find myself restricting my movement, not because I can't move (I find them easier to move in), but because I'm afraid of accidentally flashing people.

All in all, it's hard for me to strike a balance between being able to move freely, yet not being constantly paranoid. It's easier to avoid skirts altogether if I know I have to move.

Edited to add: Also, for someone who doesn't wear skirts on a regular basis, when I do wear a skirt, I'm semi-dressed up. So, there's also a psychological barrier preventing me from moving freely or throwing myself cross-legged on the floor because I'm trying to "maintain my look".

Okay I swear when they barely uploaded this picture, there was a comment that said "who is the guy in the back?" and there was several comments saying they hoped it was Jana's boyfriend. I was going to screen shot the comment and post it here but now it's gone? It was like the fourth comment from the top and had 15 likes and ten replies. I wonder if the Duggars deleted it or  the person who actually wrote it. Kind of suspicious......

I pointed this out to a Fundie roommate many years ago, and she said that this showed that God knew pants were going to be invented.  Nonsense.

Long pants are no longer the exclusive garb of men (as they were in the 19th century). So this is just one more silly Fundie rule.

Yes!!! I've been waiting for someone to mention that. ;)

I've worn only skirts or dresses for nearly six years now*. Jogging can be fine in a skirt - I'd wear one that was over the knee, but only just, and 3/4 to full circle. No issues there. I've painted walls, cleaned, cooked over a campfire, hiked, lifted weights, and ridden a bike. I actually find skirts more comfortable! 

* One exception - walking on a glacier. I was wearing a skirt over my leggings, and got overheated. Took the skirt off.

My 3 year old is in a dress phase- will only wear dresses. It's cold here and since she's very active I make her wear tights under. Yesterday she went biking in a pink dressup princess dress.  So far dresses haven't restricted her. If skirts/dresses were keeping her from playing and moving freely they'd be banned. But on friday she has a rock climbing class. So she'll be wearing pants for that. I'm not looking forward to that fight.  

She is also required to wear a leotard or simple tshirt/tights combo for dance and gymnastics classes.  If we were fundie she wouldn't be allowed in those classes with a skirt, so they would have to go by the wayside. Which is sad, because she's gotten so much out of them.  Not that they can afford or are willing to do, special classes for their kids.

Pants are readily available to her- and I'm constantly trying to get her into them. Pants and a shirt on a little girl are cute IMO.  She only wants her "new pretty dresses".  

I wear skirts and pants. But  I have self esteem issues so unless it's warm and a full length skirt I wear tights under the skirt.  And right now I'm 8 months pregnant, so I'm limited to what I can fit into. Which isn't much.... I'm finding elastic waist skirts a lot more forgiving then pants.  And married fundie women spend so so much of their lives pregnant, maybe having the elastic waist skirts as most of the wardrobe means they don't need to switch wardrobes every time they get pregnant?

It must have been gone pretty quick, since I didn't see that comment last night, about 10 hrs ago. Theres one that says:

But it *ALMOST* looks like Jana is wearing jeans, but I know its probably just a jean skirt
