Jeremy Durham, a Tennessee state representative, has just resigned as Republican whip after three women came forward to say he was harassing them into the wee hours with texts and Facebook messages. Shortly before that, he was celebrating not-quite-being-indicted for prescription drug fraud. And in between those two moments in the limelight, according the NashvilleScene.com

Ah yes, Durham's arrest in college: He broke into the home of a guy who was dating his ex-girlfriend, vandalized it, and was charged with, among other things, aggravated burglary.

In his letter about Joseph Neill, Durham asked the court to consider that the good he had done as a missionary might offset his little lapses with child porn and teens in his congregation. Neill's computer images of violent child porn were found during his investigation for statutory rape.

Geez, this guy's been busy.   I am going to do some more digging on Durham.   I don't get how anyone can think it's OK to overlook the acts of a pedophile.  It could be potentially tragic if the pedophile managed to get a job working with young children because of a cover-up.  Glad Neill ended up with some jail time, so at least his crimes show up in a background check.

There have been a lot of articles out recently about the neuropsychological makeup about pedophiles. Frankly, for the most part I don't buy it. I've never met a pedophile in real life, but over the past couple of weeks I've been stalking a bunch on Facebook and getting the creepy pages they share taken down. It all started when one of them left a sick comment on a public thread, so I stalked him and his friends. I quickly discovered that all of them are friends with each other and all share the same Facebook pages which they use as fronts to meet online and exchange child porn privately. The point is, if you look at their interests, all of them are also very much into adult women and adult porn. I think there are very few "pure" pedophiles. Most of them strike me as broad-spectrum sexual perverts who fetishize depravity in general, to the point that they get their biggest jollies by breaking the most extreme social taboos. The fact that lots of them are also into incest supports this hypothesis. There's another category as well, the misogynists/fundamentalists, who don't necessarily seek out children or child porn, but have no problem with and may opportunistically participate in pedophilic behaviors, because they view females in general as nothing more than sex targets. Just my two cents, as an internet junkie.

I've gotten to know three pedophiles in the course of my work, and one in my personal life. (A friend who confessed his attraction to children to me and others in his small support group. He was in therapy and was diligent in avoiding situations where he might be around children. He was also working with a sexual surrogate to see if he could redirect his desires. (Answer: no.) He chose a career that put him around older adults.)

Three of them were very adamant that they had not been molested, and I believe them. Only one had any attraction to grown women. (Interestingly, this is the only one of the four who took no responsibility at all for his behavior, basically blaming the victims. ) The others fought their impulses very hard.

Some pedophiles are obviously scum. Arrogant narcissistic, predatory scum.

This is going to be controversial, but I have to say -  especially after knowing my friend -  I think there is a whole subset of pedophiles out there who are basically decent people who have very warped desires and who hate those desires, and who try very hard not to act on them. They understand that ANY slip-ups are completely unacceptable. And it takes a lot of diligence on their part to keep themselves away from tempting situations. You usually won't find this subset of pedophiles trolling the internet.
