What is cuddly, fluffy and starts with an E? Sarah Maxwell Gets a Dog

I'm really happy for Sarah. She now has someone that will adore her, love her unconditionally, and demand nothing in return. I'm sure too, that Sarah will take wonderful care of Ellie and regularly walk her, brush her etc. God knows, they have enough spare time.

I hope that Steve doesn't do something awful if Sarah spends what he perceives to be too much time walking, petting and feeding Elllie and takes her away for becoming an "idol" like he did to Terri's Pepsi :(

I am genuinely worried about that. God help that poor little puppy if Steve decides Sarah (or the whole family) is spending to much time with her making an idol of her. :(

I'm worried abou that too. :my_cry:

But I also think that getting rid of the dog would be quite a risky move on Stevehova's part. Sure, he has his family brainwashed and beaten down. But if he got rid of the one creature his daughters, grand-children and maybe even wife love so dearly, that could lead so bad results, especially if the dog is meant as a substitute for husband and children.

So I guess Stevehova will put up with the dog if that means that Sarah will get distracted from the fact that she most likely won't ever marry and bear children.

He never took Teri's Pepsi away.  It was Teri who decided Pepsi was getting between her and Jesus and therefore had to be cut out of her life.

I'm jealous. If I weren't a heathen college student with an evil job, I could have a dog too. But I had to settle for a cat. They require a bit less upkeep.

Oh my goodness. That dog is just so. freaking. cute. I absolutely love golden retrievers. And good for Sarah, this will certainly brighten up her life a little. I just hope they treat it better than they treat their children/themselves.

soda isn't good for you and it's great that she stopped drinking it but...how does soda get between you and Jesus? The spirit of a guy who may or may not have lived, who has come to be the center of the modern hero myth that has been recycled since ancient times, who you have an invisible relationship with, wants you to stop drinking soda. :my_dodgy: Zeus would also like me to stop obsessing over Taylor Swift. It's coming between us. So I mean, I guess I get it.

Have they had dogs before?

I grew up with a beautiful Golden Retriever and then 2 Labrador Retrievers. They need lots of socialising - (heathen puppy classes?!) a huge amount of exercise. And due to boundless energy they can be hard to train without perseverance. They can also be very destructive, ours chewed numerous pieces of furniture as puppies and would always eat anything, no matter how disgusting. They are adorable if trained correctly, though. I just hope Steve lets Ellie be a house pet.

They have had a dog before. Steve was actually pretty fond of it, to the point that he was even surprised that he was so upset when it died. Because, you know, dogs don't have souls and won't go to heaven.

That's also my concern. My aunt had the same dog, called Texas, but was too lazy to take dog training classes so he destroyed everything in her house, litterally. He wasn't agressive, just bored I guess. These dogs are known to act like little children. Without training, you can except a lot of mess in your house but also in your garden and around people. Anyway, I don't think Sarah would be allowed to take dog training classes so let's hope she can search on google how to train her dog.

God please forgive Steve, asshole that he is, he doesn't understand that you gave us animals to love. :my_angry:

I, too, am happy for Sarah. I hope that having a dog gets her out of the house a bit, even if it's just around the neighborhood for a walk.

Honey the dog made occasional appearances on the blog and suddenly got disappeared into the cornfield like so many others. There's wasn't a single mentioned of her when she died (as she must have), but considering not even Teri's father—who was a regular blog feature—merited a mention until about a year later, this is no surprise.

I've ready through the blog a few times and have no recollection of Steve talking about being upset that Honey died. I do remember him saying he couldn't understand loving a dog, however…

Sarah, my oldest daughter, will occasionally tease me by saying, “Come on Daddy, admit it, you love that dog.” What is there to admit? How could I say I love a dog? I love my children and Teri, but I can’t see “loving” a dog (please, no e-mails from anyone who does). Without playing word games, isn’t love really a choice that is demonstrated by actions? So, if Sarah watches the way I patiently interact with the dog, scratch its neck, and offer to let the dog ride along in the car when I’m going somewhere, she might draw the conclusion that I love that dog!

Please, oh, please, let her be allowed to take the dog to a dog park when it gets a little older!

"A man and his dawg" lol WTF Steve. Love isn't a choice. Is he saying he chose to love his kids?? He chose to love Teri?? Like Slughorn says in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, you cannot manufacture or create love.

There's a degree of truth to choosing to love. I've been married 25 years, almost 26. There are definitely days, it's a choice to love my husband, lol. Particularly when he's snoring loud enough to wake up people 3 time zones away. ;)

Steve is unable to reconcile anything spontaneous in his life. He truly believes that he made the conscious decision to feel love for his newborn children, a dog that he wanted, cared for, and willingly took for rides in his car, and the wife that he met as a younger, more worldly man.

There are people who can not naturally feel love and affection in the same way  as most others. Steve doesn't seem to be one of them. If anything, He clearly loves, and loves freely. The issue is that he doesn't trust that instinct. I'd say his comments smack of an enormous lack of confidence. He clearly doesn't feel that people are capable of loving him without making a specific decision to do so, so therefore, he tries to apply that metric to his own relationships. Jesus gives him an excuse for some of the things he doesn't understand, but for everything else, he's just a frightened, sad little man who uses control in any form to mask a lifetime of insecurities.

"English Cream" golden retrievers are mostly bred for a really ploddy, calm temperament so they'll probably be okay energy-level wise and not taking it to classes.

Oh my stars!  What a doll :my_heart:

I am one of the ones who never wishes for Sarah to marry or have children until she's had time to recover from the cult like lifestyle she's been forced to live.  I am not of the mind that she would be any better off with a younger version of Steve, and I certainly don't think a child should have to be brought up in that way just to make Sarah happy.

A dog may be just the thing though.  She seems to have put a lot of thought into it, and I think she will be amazed at the joy Ellie will bring to her life if she gives her the opportunity.  Other dog lovers will understand- there's just nothing like the loyalty and friendship of a good dog.

This also gives Sarah a chance to purchase baby like things (note the pink Kong), and she seems to have really thought about her name too.  Such a fun time.  I bet Ellie will be spoiled with lots of dog toys- she may well be the only "child" Sarah has, but I am thinking she will be a good one.

Agree.  I have no memory at all of Steve saying that.  I'm almost positive they never mentioned Honey's death at all.

You don't settle for a cat, the cat settles for you!
