Oh no...

The Las Vegas Strip was blocked off after a car mowed down more than 30 pedestrians Sunday night, authorities said.

At least one person is dead and seven are in critical condition, fire officials said. Medics tended to 37 people.

Authorities don't yet know whether the incident was an accident or intentional. The driver was in custody and was undergoing various tests, including one for alcohol, authorities said.

Rows of ambulances and police cars gathered at the scene, their lights flickering. A witness described a chaotic scene as people fled.

Thinking of those injured or killed tonight and their families.

It was a woman, it was deliberate, and she had a three year old in the car with her. WTF.

Terrible. I can imagine how crowded with people that area would have been. How frightening. When I saw this last night, I was reminded of that incident at the OSU homecoming parade. Wonder if this is a similar kind of thing.

Yeah, that's fucked up what she did.  Especially with a child in the car.  I can't even wrap my head around why she would've done such a thing.

CNN said she hit 38 people with one person dying as a result.

She apparently mounted the pavement (sidewalk) three times.

The US seems to have a large number of disaffected citizens, who commit random acts of violence. Not only the numerous shootings , with multiple victims, but the use of a car as a weapon is not new - think Oklahoma football game. There seems to be a disconnect from society for some people - and nobody is looking to see why. I do not think it is all due to mental illness.

With this as a background, I think many Fundies are looking for an answer, and only finding it in doubling down on the Bible. They are so scared, and perhaps this is why fundamentalism has come out of the shadows in recent years.

Not expressing myself very well - it's late here - but can anyone see what I am trying to say?

And why did so many become disaffected to this degree?

I think you've expressed it quite well.  Better than I do during the day sometimes after having some coffee.

I think we have a problem with violence - not just the horrific acts that make the news but the many thousands of acts that are committed that don't garner wide attention.  Part of it is due to mental illness, something just snaps inside people and they go berserk.  Others grow up in an environments where limits were never set for them so they think the rules and laws that make society function are for other people.   Many people think everything should be handed to them on a silver platter and act out when they don't get what they want.

As for the relationship between fundies and the bible yes I think they find their answers in the bible.  They see the world going to hell in a hand basket and see that the bible says all these bad things are going to happen but they'll be saved and taken away from all that.  Or that Jesus will come back any moment and institute the theocracy of their dreams here on Earth.  But depending on how you look at events, many of these predictions that the fundies love to talk about already happened shortly after Christ's departure.

Fundies come to see the bible as the be all and end all of human existence and use it to justify their actions, no matter how twisted or evil these actions are.  Add to that the bible is a collection of materials from many different authors from the bronze age into the iron age with cultural norms completely different than what we have today.  But since the fundies got talked into thinking the entirety of the bible is the inerrant and unchanging word of God they think that all of us should live according to these bronze/iron age codes.

I think part of the problem is the more fundie churches just about anyone can attend a bunch of seminars on weekends and be declared biblical experts.  Unlike the Catholic and mainlines where they want their priests/bishops to be highly educated on the bible - such as having a masters or doctorate in theology - before being ordained.

I hope that makes sense.  Sorry if this was a bit long winded and off topic.

I think the bolded is very true for many , and then they are angry  and frustrated when they find it is not.

That Fundies take ,as you say, a collection of writings from the Bronze and Iron Ages, and try to live by them in the 21st century without regard to changing cultural norms  - it is just ridiculous, for anyone analysing without a religious perspective.

And the lack of formal education, let alone theological education, of so many Fundie ministers compounds the problem. Can you imagine Jimboob or Gil in debate with any random Jesuit? It would probably be too embarrassing to watch - but most Jesuits are quite kind, so he would probably hold off from total humiliation....

I actually can't get my head round people who take the Bible literally - or as literally as it suits them. It's a Bronze and Iron Age PARABLE, for fuck's sake - science has proved it is not literal - but sorry, forgot Fundies don't believe in science. However, there are a lot of things they ignore - the oft mentioned mixing of cotton and linen, anybody?

Sorry, this has turned into an anti Fundie rant - all I can say in my defence is that it is almost 1am here...and it's been a long, hard day!

I'd pay to see JimBoob or Gil in a debate with any random Jesuit.  It'd be entertaining to watch.  PPV it and give the proceeds to some worthwhile charity.

And Steve Maxwell Everything from lack of discpline to feminism gets the blame for how this generation is, but I feel it goes much deeper.A child can have the best upbringing and still do unspeakable acts. One thing for sure people cant seperate fantasy from reality.DHs dad took him out hunitng one day shot a rabbit and said you see bunny he's dead or gonna be. DH grew up in the 60s. It sounds harsh, but DH said it made an impression. It taught guns arent toys to play with. People dont come back in the next round like on video games.

We were in Vegas Sunday night watching the SNF game when the local news broke in with breaking news, that there was a mass casualty situation on the strip. We were staying on the other side of the hotels at the Rio so we couldn't see any lights, but Flamingo, the cross street was blocked off right across the street from the hotel. Thank God there are several good hospitals in the area. UMC is the level 1 trauma center for most of Nevada. The live reports from the bystanders were horrifying.

The latest news on this woman is so troubling. She was said to be a success story in Oregon. They said in the court she was like a zombie. I am glad her child was not injured but to the one dead woman's family and 36 others, their lives will never be the same.
