Ghost Stories: Do You Haz?

I shared an old (120 years old) house with a friend when we were in our twenties. The landlord did quite a lot of upgrading after purchasing it from an elderly lady after her husband died. There were several new power points, new plumbing for a washing machine etc.

i would often hear our microwave working in the very early hours of the morning around 2.00am usually. I figured my housemate couldn't sleep so was making a snack for herself. Occassionally the washing machine would start up. I again put it down to my housemates insomnia.

then lights started coming on throughout the house at all hours. Being an old house the switches were heavy and stiff and could not flick on by accident.

My housemate then freaked us both out by asking me one morning what on earth I was doing at night because I was continually waking her up by doing my washing and beeping the microwave.

panic ensued all around. We rang the landlord and found out that the husband of the previous owner had died in the house but by all accounts had been a lovely man. His name was Mr Green. We ended up "speaking" to him and asking him to cut out playing with our appliances while we were trying to sleep. Every time we left the house we would say "bye Mr Green, look after the house please" and we'd greet him when we came home too.

the beeping microwave, lights and washing machine settled right down after we had our chat with him. We lived there for a couple of years and after we moved out the house was demolished. It was quite sad.

We get random noises sometimes. The heavy freezer door slamming shut (a unique sound) when no one is in the basement to open/close it. My husband once woke up to the sound of kids being noisy in the main room, and went out to tell them to pipe down, but no one was there. He's even more a skeptic than I am, and that one freaked him out a lot. One of my daughters has seen a dark shape move across the room, and I've seen movement out of the corner of my eye where there was nothing.

A few years ago, my camera remote went missing. I always kept it in the same spot in the basement when not in use, because it was small and I didn't want it to get lost. But it was missing one day, so I looked everywhere. Under the couch cushions, under the couches, everywhere. At that time, no one else used the basement, and definitely didn't mess with my camera supplies. We only had one kid back then, and she was afraid of the basement. After a bunch of looking for that remote, I gave up. Six months later, I went downstairs and there was the remote, sitting perfectly square in the center of one of the couch cushions. That was the moment I started to believe there may be a ghost in here. No one would have placed that remote there.

According to my DS, the house we lived in, in Colorado was haunted. His bedroom and his brother's bedroom, were connected, via a long closet type thing. Apparently, we had two ghosts, a man and a teen-aged girl, and they stayed in the closet.

According to DS, the girl rarely left the closet, and spent all of her time crying, and she didn't interact with DS. The male ghost did leave the closet, but not the bedroom. He would interact with DS, like talk to him, sit on his bed, and was allegedly very annoyed with the crying ghost girl. DS said that most of the time, the ghost would just look out of the bedroom window, and repeatedly ask "where are they".

I took it with a grain of salt mostly, because DS was only 3yo, when all of this happened. Then, the people that we bought the house from, came by one day, and totally freaked us out. They actually had a son, who was in his early 20s, die in a motorcycle accident, just a couple of years before we moved in. His room, was the same room as DS. What DS said, about the ghost looking out of the window, and asking "where are they", made a lot more sense. The ghost was looking for his parents.

Nothing else weird happened in the house, other than my kid turning into the Sixth Sense kid, and seeing dead people.

When I was young every single night I would see a man standing in my doorway. He never did much he just stood there and moved every once in a while. I would call my dad and when my dad walked up the man would casually walk away. After my dad stopped answering my calls the man grinned. To this day I have no idea what that was.

Ive had a few :)

Some unusual things happened in the house I grew up in, including my dad getting calls from our house while there was nobody in, a clock flying off a wall, finding four photographs of my brother as a baby in a line on my bedroom floor, a doll belonging to my little sister that laughed when you squeezed it going off by itself once, hearing my name called when I was alone...and as a paranormal investigator I have some unusual stories, such as walking through a graveyard at night, further ahead of the rest of the team, looking at the names on gravestones, and one of the team members, who claims to be psychic, mentioned a name-the exact name was on the gravestone I was looking at, and it was facing away from her. There was also another time, there were two of us in a house (me and another member of the team, who owned the house), both in the same room, and we heard footsteps downstairs, then the door to the room we were in opened by itself.

One time something happened while I was on a paranormal investigation, but wasn't there at the time-I left the baby (who had just turned two at the time) with my dad and stepmom for the night, and apparently she was smiling and talking to herself and staring into the top corner of the room. Then she said "Hello mommy. Hello light". The baby is not my biological child, I am caring for her because her mother died.

So, the undergrad institution I went to was founded in 1693. Plenty of ghost stories to go around, right?
It was the first month of my freshman year and I had my first college boyfriend. It was a Wednesday, he was drunk. I had come to get him from some revelry and we while we were walking home he needed to stop. We sat down on this little bench across from a famous campus pond. I was rubbing his back and he was crying about...something (first semester college feelings, I guess?).

I felt the urge to turn around and so I did and there, sort of like a hologram, fading in and our of my vision, was this woman with long black wet hair wearing a wet chemise. Staring at me.

I have a policy involving things like this which is largely just -- do not engage. I said, "We need to go, we need to get walk away, do not turn around" and we did.

---

One thing that I did as a child that scared the piss out of my mother is tell her about my past life, apparently. I was about 2 years old and I would tell her about living in a small hut with my grandfather, being 13 years old, and going to get water from the river one day. And then I'd describe in detail being shot by men wearing army greens while filling that bucket. That really gave her the heejeebs and I had dreams about it until I was about 12 or so.

My dad used to have a big workshop filled with wood working tools.  I loved to go hang out with him there; he'd give me scraps of whatever to glue and play with while he messed around with heavier stuff.  One day he found a dead kitten in the workshop.  He buried it without telling me, thinking it would be distressing.  When I went out there that afternoon, I kept asking about the kitten playing in the corner.  He couldn't see it, nor could my mother, but apparently I described the kitten he'd buried that morning.  I was probably around 3 or 4 at the time, and sadly don't remember the event.

I never believed in ghosts, until I saw one.  I worked in a small metal stamping plant as a computer specialist.  I worked Sunday and Monday part time after I had my last kid.  The office area was one central hall with offices down each side of a hallway. The factory was accessible through a door with a window that was in the center of the long hallway.

I was there by myself on a Sunday morning, and since I was the only one there, I turned off the alarm in the office area and locked myself in.  It was a beautiful sunny day and on my way to the bathroom I glanced down the central aisle of the factory through the window in the door, and saw a man walking away from me about halfway down the aisle dressed in blue Dickies work clothes.  About a second later I wondered if the foreman who sometimes showed up to do paperwork on the weekends was in the factory.  He usually let me know he was there so he didn't startle me.   I immediately took a few steps back  and looked into the facdtory, and the man was gone.  I went into an office that overlooked the parking lot to see if the foreman's truck was there and the only car there was mine.  I checked and the factory alarm was still armed so anyone out there would have triggered the alarm.    This was a solid person, not see through or misty like in the movies.

Monday morning I described the man to some of the workers who had  been there for years, and they told me I saw Jim, the guy who had a heart attack while standing at his press and died on the spot.  A lot of people had seen him over the years since he died.   There had been other times when I was working at my desk, agai, the only person in the building, and I thought I'd see someone walking down the hallway out of the corner of my eye, but never saw anyone, it was probably Jim.

I used to laugh at people who told ghost stories, not anymore.   I too have felt someone tap me on the shoulder only to turn around and no one is there.  My ex father in law always said he would come back after he died, and every once in a while, I've smelled the cheap cherry pipe tobacco he used to smoke when he was still alive, I think it's him.

I have a question for you as an investigator.

My parents enclosed our garage and turned it into a playroom for me and my brother. We had an old TV out there that we mostly used for playing video games. If you sat in the beanbag chair in front of the TV, and the door to the rest of the house was open, out of your peripheral vision you would see a series of lights moving in one direction at the height of the doorknob. If you turned your head to look at the doorway straight on, you wouldn't ever see anything.

Just for reference, the door to the attic where I heard the noises at night was about a foot in front of this door. The lights were a golden color and the continuous pattern they made was like this: -----------. Have you ever come across anything similar?

We have inside ghosties and outside ghosties.

The inside ghosties include, at the very least,  the previous owner of the house (who was older when they passed). The cats, in particular, interact with this ghostie. It is very friendly with them and will play with them -- they're not scared, and they don't even really look too surprised when they look back with the "hey, who grabbed my butt" mrrrr noise. Roommate and I have jokingly said hello to the ghostie -- if nothing else, it's a friendly coexistence.

The outside ghosties, on the other hand, are a bit less friendly. The neighborhood borders a graveyard. I've definitely seen shapes passing the windows, heard odd noises, the cats have gone from sleepy perching next to a window to a mad, terrified dash through the house. I tend to keep the windows covered once it's dark. That may just be me being paranoid, but I'd rather not see dark shapes outside when I get up to pee at 3 am. The doorbell (which is loud as it is) will occasionally ring out of nowhere -- and the front door has been blown/pushed open when it was (supposed to be) locked. That's less friendly.

Ok, you all are kind of scaring me with all these stories. I was always under the firm impression that ghosts aren't real. And it is still a mystery to me why somehow some ghosts seem to be around while all the other bilions of people who have died throughout history just seem to vanish. Or are they, in fact, still among us? Must be pretty crowded then.

<snip>

I would be the only one at home but would wake up to the whole house smelling heavily of maple syrup. This happened several times. Moving shadows started appearing in other rooms of the house, and my dog started belly crawling through certain areas, if I could even get her to go in them at all. The worst by far though, was whatever it was would blindside me with a smell from when my mom was sick with cancer. It was an unmistakable, horrific smell, and it would envelope me when I was walking down the hallway or when I entered rooms. Other people experienced the other incidents at times, but that smell only happened to me. I constantly relived the horror of my mom's illness and the crushing grief. It was a relief to move out of that house, despite the many good memories it also held.

This was strangely cathartic; thank you!

This smell thing reminded me of some strange similar events that happened when I was a senior in HS.

Periodically, and when I was the only person in the house, I would get this overwhelming fragrance of perfume in the bedroom I slept in, and nowhere else in the house. This fragrance would come with a momentary light-headed feeling and then a distinct feeling of comfort. It's hard to explain.

When I told my mom about it, she blew it off as me smelling my own perfume, but this wasn't a fragrance of mine, nor did it smell familiar at all. When this would happen, I was usually the only person in the house, or my mom or dad would be home and elsewhere in the house, but neither of them wore cologne/perfume.

I also thought maybe I was having some kind of neurological issue, but it only happened in that house with that exact progression of sensory input: fragrance, light-headedness, feeling of comfort or peace.

Sorry for the length of this one.

A few years ago Mr Blah and I were driving at about 10.00am along a long, straight country road. No cars in either direction, only farmland either side. No farm houses or buildings of any type. No gates or roads, just an unbroken wire fence set back about 5 metres from the road. This 5 metre verge was covered with sunburnt low grass and scrubby low plants - just above ankle height. It was a hot clear summer morning.

i was reading the newspaper and Mr Blah was driving. He suddenly said " Where's he going? He'll be hot in that coat."

I looked up and saw a man in the distance wearing a long dark coat walking in the same direction that we were traveling. He was walking near the fence line not the side of the road so was not hitch hiking. There were no properties anywhere for kilometres that he could have come from or been going to.

We drove past him. I didn't take a good look because I didn't want to catch his eye. As soon as we had gone past, Mr Blah looked in the rear view mirror and said "Where's he gone?"

i turned around and there was no sign of him. There was nowhere for him to be, no tree, no bushes, no other cars around.  Unless he had dropped flat to the ground (and even then I think we would have seen him) he had just vanished. We spoke about this man for a while then just forgot about him.

several years later we were listening to a radio chat show. The topic of local ghosts came up. Someone rang in with a story about a well-known apparition of a young airman who was regularly seen walking along a stretch of Port Wakefield Road (google Port Wakefield ghost). Apparently he was killed in training and his ghost was walking home to his mum.

Yes, we had been driving on Port Wakefield Road when we saw the vanishing man in the long dark coat.

Gosh, you guys have alot of ghost encounters! I find it really interesting how many people of from different places have one or more stories and experiences.

Yesterday we had friends visiting and the topic of paranormal encounters came somehow up, and friend told me a kindergarten mate of our children apparently remembers her past life and also sees ghosts. Her mom told friend. She even recorded her daughter talking about it. and there is also a "trend" going on with some parents, asking their little ones, everyone under 5, if ther could remember where they were "before they were with mommy and daddy", triggering memories of a past life. Never heard about this before, google says it really is a thing, quite some moms and dads posting it on reddit and all.

What do you all say about that?

Also: I don´t think graveyards are scary. They are a place of great respect and peace, they are often highly interesting in regards of art, masonry and history, but scary? Somehow no. Or maybe that´s just me, I am not that overly sensitive for ghosts I think ^^.

I haz.  I think I might have told it here once before but I'm too lazy to go look for it so I'll tell it again.

Back story: my mom and her sisters had an older brother who was killed in an accident when he was 21, in 1960.

In 2000, or 2001, my aunt (who was then living in the same house they'd all grown up in, she'd moved back in to care for my grandma before she died) was working in one of the upstairs bedrooms, re-doing it to make it into a playroom for her granddaughter.  It was the room that had belonged to Brooke, my uncle.  She had taken up the carpet and was tearing up the old linoleum from the 40's that had been there the whole time it was his room.  It was hot; the upstairs rooms had no AC vents and she didn't have the window AC on because she didn't want the dust blowing around.

All of a sudden, she had an unbelievably strong feeling that there was a presence in the room and that it was him.  She sat back on her heels and said out loud "Brooke, is that you?"  A cool breeze blew through the room, hard enough to blow her hair away from her face and off her neck.  The windows were closed, no fans,  nothing could have caused it.  She said she sat there in shock for a few minutes.  Then she went downstairs, picked up the phone and called me, at 11pm, because she knew I was the only person in the family who would believe her and not say she was crazy.  I believe it was him and that he was giving his blessing for his room to be used for his great-niece.

ETA:  Anny Nym, I am also not scared in cemeteries.  I LOVE THEM.  I love reading the stones and imagining everyone's lives.

Oh, I love our cemetery. It's quiet and the only living being I know spends time hanging out there is my roommate's cat -- yes, the black cat likes hanging out in the cemetery. He likes that it's quiet and that nobody bothers him.

My Mother told me when I was small that I was always talking in great detail about my sister who lived in Dallas. People who knew my parents would get very confused by this as I don't have a sister.

@Anny Nym I love graveyards! They don't scare me at all, I think they're quite peaceful places at times. I used to live near one as well and yes it's quite unnerving to see shapes moving there after dark or to be going through one and see something behind you and then see nothing.

I love graveyards. They're quiet, and reading the stones is interesting.

Of course, if these people were actually alive, I'd probably find them rather boring. The irony.

Oh, and then my roommate followed a spectral dog home one night last fall.

He bike-commutes and takes public trails, and on one, there was a large dog shape running just ahead. When roommate should have caught up to it...it vanished. Like, right in front of him.

Forgot this one until I was reading other responses:

When I was about 17, I was babysitting late at night. I've always loved ghost stories, even though I'm pretty skeptical about them, so I was watching some sort of "true ghost stories" show on TV after the kids went to bed. The kids' rooms were in the finished basement, and there was a TV down there in a sort of play room, so that's where I was, laying on a couch, with a pile of toys in one corner of the room and a ride-on electronic toy sitting between the couch and TV.

There was a woman on the TV show talking about how she was asking for a ghost to try to give her a sign that it was there with her. At that moment, when she asked for a sign, that electronic ride-on toy began to roll across the room and the lights on it started flashing.

I ran up the stairs and didn't go back down there again. The parents returned home shortly after, thank goodness, because I really didn't want to have to check on the kids again and see if that toy was still cruising around the room.

Here's a creepy experience that happened to my husband.

He worked in a law office that was located in an old converted townhouse that was over a hundred years old. In the 1950's, the man who lived there alone was murdered by a drifter. He was stabbed multiple times on the second floor and stumbled down the steps to fall in front of the front door. His body was discovered the next morning when the mailman found a pool of blood on the front stoop. (Okay, the gruesome story of the murder might be unnecessary, but that part really spooked me).

The house was empty for about a decade before the law practice moved in. Over the years, people would report hearing stumbling footsteps going down the stairs, lights going off, and a "hostile" feeling when alone. My husband worked there as a clerk one summer when he was in law school. It was the day before the 4th of July and he was the only one in the office. He said all of a sudden he had an uneasy feeling, and was having trouble concentrating. The next thing he knew, he was sitting in his car across the street. He thought, strange as it might be, that he had somehow fallen asleep and sleepwalked into his car.  But then a couple of weeks later two of the secretaries who worked in the office were joking around with each other and one said something like, "At least I don't sleep walk out of the office." Turns out, several people had had the same experience in the office over the years. Like the spirit in the building wanted them out.

Weirdly, I only thought of this story this morning because I turned my car on to let it heat up (unlocked) while I finished getting ready for work, and my husband was adamant that I make sure to check my backseat before I got in the car to "make sure there's not a drifter hiding in there."

I have had a couple of 'encounters' of the spiritual variety, but the one that freaked me out the most wasn't because I thought the spirit would hurt me, but because I still to this day cannot think of any logic to explain it away like I can with other ghost stories.

My great grandmother, whom we all called Nonnie, was an all around lady (high heels for chores and white gloves to church.. the whole nine yards). In the final year of her life, she was declining rapidly from Alzheimer's and, as she no longer recognized us but still thought of herself as a true lady, my aunt (who got pregnant out of wedlock) decided it would be best not to upset her with news of her bastard grandchild so shortly before she would pass away. Nonnie ended up dying a few weeks before my new cousin was born.

Fast forward 2 years later and I am babysitting my little cousin who is somewhat talking, and definitely in the 'getting into everything' and constant movement stage. We were playing in the basement when suddenly she stops and stands completely still and stares toward the wall. I thought that maybe she saw a bug or something so I asked her what she was looking at. She then proceeded to point to the wall and said, "Nonnie." Hoping she was just babbling I asked her to repeat what she said. She then replied, "Nonnie... here," and kept pointing. At this point I was getting pretty nervous and I asked her to once again tell me what she meant. She then darted off to a cabinet in an area of the house that we didn't allow her to go in (fragile things and such) and pulled out a picture of Nonnie that there is NO WAY that she had ever seen before and again said, "Nonnie here."

Needless to say, I immediately scooped her up, went outside, and called my mother and aunt and told them to GET HOME RIGHT NOW. My aunt confirmed that she had never spoken to her about Nonnie, so I cannot think of any possible way she would have known to say that... and THEN known where that picture was/who it was of. I don't think my Nonnie's spirit would ever harm me... but at 16 I didn't really feel like being at home alone with a 2 year old long enough to find out.

TL;DR: My great grandmother visited me- causing me to forever believe in ghosts (or at least spiritual energies).

As soon as I started talking, I told my mother about where I had lived before I came to her. With a lot of details that were spot on from that country and that era. My mother thought it was scary and tried to talk about other things instead and I eventually stopped talking about it. I have no memory of any of it but has always been drawn to the country where I said I had lived and especially interiors from that era.

Two mediums have told me basically the same story that I told my mother. I haven't looked into it myself, but it would be interesting to try hypnosis and see if something comes up.
