57.5 acres

He paid almost 7k an acre?!?!?!?  That's insane.  I did a little looking at land in that area, when you take out home plots in subdivisions the average price is about 4k.  But I did find one that they are selling for 26k an acre, with nothing on the land, no mineral rights, no utilities, nothing.

when you're selling land, it helps to know your audience. whoever sold those plots knew that they would be valuable to the Duggars and priced them accordingly. We're thinking about selling some farmland to a neighbor farmer. It's unirrigated "dry" land for us, but the neighbor has a well right next to it. So if we do, we'll sell it at a price above what dry land usually goes for around here (but not quite as high as irrigated land - we like this guy.)

If the sellers knew that JB was looking to buy land, it makes sense to price it high and see if he'll pay for it.

Now with the scandals, I suspect JB wants both a tight leash and privacy.   He's learned that he can't trust Josh not to be forthcoming in anything, this is probably his worst nightmare: having no control over his kids and trusting they are toeing the line.   And there's the negative publicity.  Josh blew the family's main income, their financial security, their brand and their reputation out of the water.   I think JB is literally circling the wagons around his family but the big question still remains: how will he continue to support all those kids, and their eventual spouses / families?

Not that I want to defend Josh, but it seems to me that what cost them the show was not what Josh did ( the molestation) but how they handled it.  If the Duggars had taken Josh to a therapist when the molestations began and owned up to those past "mistakes" when the show started, there would have not been the same backlash from the public.  It was the hypocrisy, that ruined the show.

You are right, it was the parents' mishandling of the molestations when they first occurred and the hypocrisy when the "happy wholesome Christian family" was discovered to not be the case after branding themselves as such.

What i wrote about Josh blowing things for the family was from the family's perspective, though I did not make that clear.  I do think that JB and J'chelle completely fail to see the mistakes they made with regards to Josh and blame him when they should be blaming themselves.

When my great-uncle died back in 2005 there were several developers who suddenly got quite interested in some of his land holdings being as how they were near the main highway in to town.  He was the one that never got married nor had children so his siblings got quite a bit of $$$ from the sale of his land.  And the land that wasn't in a prime location I believe my dad bought it for his own farm.

First, I wonder how long it will take for the "tabloid-ish" media to pick up on all the great info on this thread and write an article, citing "sources close to the Duggars" or some such....ha!

Second... we have an online database of property taxes in my home county, I imagine most jurisdictions publish this on line now.  It is very easy for a property owner here to opt out of showing their name on the otherwise public record.  Of course, if you know someone's address for certain, you can search by that address and find out their property taxes, whether they are delinquent, their assessed value, etc.   But making your name private does hinder, at least a bit,  those who are searching on your name, trying to find out where you live/what you own/value,etc.

So why don't the Duggars try to keep their stuff more private?  I always wondered this with the flight plans, also - it's so great to read about John David's "travels by air taxi"  in the Cirrus since he files those plans and doesn't keep them private.

Are they just ignorant?  Well, OK, I know they are ignorant in general but.... with regard to this, what's up?

I really can't figure out why they keep putting everything in their name. After the whole Josh fiasco, you'd think they'd learn...

Just to clarify I didn't exactly mean to not put the properties in their name.... (Although in the past they've used businesses/partnerships for some things) but to just exercise the option, which usually exists, to "opt out" of having their name listed.

Don't know if this is an option but I'll bet it is.

I agree that JB and Michelle don't think they did anything wrong, but I think that until the Ashley Madison stuff came out they blamed the media, not Josh.  One of the few things that rang true about their response to the molestation scandal was that they really thought the matter was over and done, that Josh had repented and been forgiven and all was well.  The Ashley Madison thing and his admission of having had affairs and so forth is what I think they can't forgive.  And yet that would not have lost them the show or the special appearances, etc.--not by itself.   But, as you say, they are blind to the real cause of their fall.

Right, they did blame the media with Joshgate 1.0 and even though their approach to handling the molestations didn't look effective to a lot of us. JB and J'chelle honestly thought it was all taken care of.    They trusted that Josh was now a right proper "right with God" Christian.  A lot of people consider the molestations worse than the infidelity but you make a good point that because JB and J'chelle thought Josh had repented, the AM thing is worse because it shows that he hadn't and also, perhaps had them fooled.   Maybe the last part is what they can't forgive.

I think it also comes down to the first one is easily "explained away" by their church. It's so "normal" that there are wisdom booklets about it, and likely seminars at the homeschooling conferences. It's just "curiosity caused by men being exposed to feelings they can't righteously fulfill." Once he got married, he was supposed to have an outlet that would allow him to be righteously fulfilled. He was only supposed to look at his wife, and porn was definitely never to be allowed. But, he failed everyone. He lied to god, he lied to Anna, he lied to his whole family, he lied to their friends, and he lied to the entire worldwide audience. And, he didn't lie just once, he lied for years. And, they can't even blame Anna. There's footage of her basically begging Josh for another child, which meant that she was available to him and he wasn't taking it. No matter how many passive aggressive posts there are that hope to blame someone else, they know they can't blame Anna. They can only blame Josh, which is why he's gone and Anna is being asked to stay. If they truly blamed Anna, she would have been the one asked to apologize and Josh would still be kicking it in family photos.

Molestation, they can forgive because their church warned them about it, and had ways to "address it." They can say they sent him to get help, which he supposedly accepted into his heart. They can blame their own parenting skills (or lack their of), and they can create new rules to "prevent it from happening again." They can blame a lust and the devil and the female body. They cant do that with AM. It's not even like he was tempted by a woman at work. He actively sought out affairs. He had two different accounts on AM, he had a fake facebook, and he had an OkC account. There's no getting around that. There's no one else to blame.
