Seriously Dads from 26th Aug: Are You A Spiritual Leper?

You can't make this shit up:

Quote
I wonder if many dads are “spiritual lepers.†The “body†of his family is experiencing pain, but instead of taking measures to stop it, he ignores it or perhaps is so out of touch that he doesn’t even sense it. The result is not pretty. The good news for the family is that there is hope, but fixing the “disease†of many bad decisions is painful and takes both time and commitment.

Steve, you are a douche and a :music-tool: .

I feel confused. When I think of the term "leper," I think about how people stay away from that person, not that it's a personal "disease" that someone is trying to ignore. Not a very concise term, Steve.

Really, Steve? Hansen's Disease, and the term "leper," no less, as a metaphor for . . . insensitivity from the "head?" I think you are reaching.

And in really, really, bad taste.

So, what is your idea of an involved, sensitive, tuned-in head of the family? Wait, don't tell me -- I know.

It's what most of us would call an obsessive control-freak. I think you've cause a huge amount of pain to your family, and have kept chipping away at them until they are the ones who are numb. Being numb is probably the only way to survive life with you.

What, you mean like having grown children who seem unable to move away from the family? Like having grown daughters who have nothing to occupy their days with except play "Auntie" and clean ceiling fans? Like having a family who can't talk about anything except death and Jesus? Like having no outside friends except people referred to as "the elderly"?

From where I am sitting the results of your leadership are not pretty.

His analogy doesn't make much sense and anyways, he's the one who is out of touch. To turn it on him, I would say he's the spiritual leper. Who wants to go near him and be infected with what he has?

Isn't this called 'projection'?

I guess I can kind of see where Steve is coming from. One of the side effects of Hansen's Disease can be a lack of ability to feel pain and thus loss of parts of extremities due to repeated injuries or infection due to unnoticed wounds. So the "spiritual leper" can't feel the pain his family is in just like a person with Hansen's Disease might not feel the pain of an injury. But it's still a crappy comparison.

I always think of Steve as similar to Erika in that their method of raising their families has a gardening analogy. Erika of LFoP practices what she calls "green housing", protecting the tender new shoots, blah, blah, blah.

Steve on the other hand, is more your Bonsai type of guy. Twining himself so tightly around his children that they emerge as adults in body, but emotionally stunted and prevented from thinking big (dreaming) in their minds.

It's clear where Steve *thinks* he's coming from. And I am familiar with the ideas because I heard those kind of leper/pain analogies in church in the 1980s.

The lack of personal insight is the mind-boggling part, as ever, in Steve's Serious Projection Series

I wonder how many spiritual lepers are also hellicopter parents. (Riffle intended.)

Actually, I think that Steve has inadvertently hit the nail on the head with this analogy.

HE is a "spiritual leper". He is ill and is treating it the way leprosy was traditionally treated - by isolation from the world in a small colony where everyone else is infected with the same illness. A colony where people lose parts of themselves to the disease (in the Maxwell's case- they lose their independence, individuality and joie de vie). He does all this when there is in fact a cure for leprosy. Just as real leprosy can be cured by a simple antibiotic so can his "spiritual leprosy" be cured with actually teaching his children in a way that allows them to be free and independent and allowing his wife to have her depression treated properly and letting his death grip on his family loose.

It's obvious that Steve doesn't feel his family's pain. And I am pretty sure there's been plenty underneath all the happy faces they are forced to put on.

As examples: He didn't and still doesn't understand Teri's depression issues, especially making her homeschool and have more kids. He doesn't understand Sarah's likely unhappiness over being a SAHD at 33, having being raised to want marriage and family and neither has materialized thus far in her life and perhaps never will. He wouldn't understand any of his children chafing under his rules and being kept from forging their own lives outside of Maxhell.

So who's the spiritual leper by this defintion? It seems rather apt but not the way Steve thinks.

Steve, you are an ignorant ass. And a tool of the highest order.

I also wanted to say, yet another reason why I love FJ is that I did not have to educate people about Hansen's Disease when I opened this thread. Thank you to everyone who got there first. As my father was a specialist in the treatment and control of the disease, I feel strongly about correcting the ignorant when they call people "lepers" and scaremonger. Leprosy/Hansen's Disease is called the "least infectious of infectious diseases" for a reason.

My father retired before MDT (dapsone, clofazimine, and rifampicin) therapy was introduced in the 80s. It was a miracle treatment. Were he alive today he would be so happy to know how far the world has come in early identification of the disease and that WHO now provides MDT treatment free to all patients. Perhaps Hansen's Disease will be vanquished in my lifetime?

He is such an ass!! He thinks his way is the only way!! He will never see the error of his ways.

Steveovah is absolutely convinced that he is right and has all the answers. He can travel all over the country lecturing people on how to fuck up your family how to shelter them to extreme levels and not think that there's anything wrong with the crazy he and his family preach. He's the type that if anyone questions him or thinks he might be wrong, it's your problem, not his.

Take it from someone who grew up with shades of Maxhell.

His critics one is even more pathetic.

I honestly cannot imagine thinking you know it all and are doing everything the only right way and everyone else sucks.

What a miserable existence.

I have no family with their dynamics or make up but the majority of my family & friends have 'kids' within the age range of his. Not a single one of those families would be proud of or happy to have raised their kids to still be under their control, without minds or confidence or dreams of their own. Those who are college are are - guess what, in college. Or, in the case of two, the military. Those in their mid-20's are done with college (and in one case, military) and making lives for themselves with jobs, friends, interests, and even social activism. Those in their later 20's and early 30's are doing so many things they can never be listed. Having families, or not. Getting married, or not. Struggling financially or not. Going to church or not. Buying a house or not. I have a gay niece and a gay nephew, both of whom are highly educated and making a difference in the world. My nephew has invented a product that is doing well in its circles (I won't say what because it will lead one right back to my family and I don't want that). Really, I could go on and on and on = as could most all of us, discussing the lives of our families and the young people in them and their accomplishments.

One thing they all have in common is that there is no Steve directing their every move Each parent trusted they did their best to raise decent human beings and fulfilled their main parental responsibility - helping form and create compassionate, honest, productive, hard working, honest members of society. Whatever failures or success any of them have, they are individuals.

And not a single one of them would be able to stand to have their lives sucked out of them rather than being guided towards something. And not a single parent would tolerate one of their kids at home cleaning cupboards and woodpiles and family bible study five times a day.

Sometimes I really wonder if Steve is convinced he is right. He lived in the real world; he served in the military and was stationed overseas. We have often times wondered about his antics while in Thailand and how well he behaved. He and Teri attended college; they have traveled extensively in the U.S. The point I am long-windedly trying to make is that Steve has seen the real world and lived in it, while his children have not. He doesn't strike me as a total dumbass, so he must realize on some level that he is not right and that most people manage to live happy, productive lives without being isolated from absolutely everybody. At this point, maybe he is just too far gone to man up and say that he was wrong and that he has infantilized his kids and prevented them from some of the wonderful things life has to offer.

Or maybe I am hoping that Steve isn't convinced he is right, because he really freaking scares me.

Steve has seen the real world and it is EVIL. And tastes bad.

I've always found this old blog post interesting. Oh, the trepidation. The upcoming "trial!" How did Dad convince the childults in advance that seafood is supposed to taste bad? Even his leg-humpers took issue with that. Note: in Maxhell Down Under does not mean Australia. ;)

Stevehovah fails miserably at setting himself up as a latter-day Damien de Veuster. He isn't worthy to kiss the ground at Moloka'i, much less refer to victims of Hansen's Disease as though they are somehow less than full human beings.

The reply to the last comment on the TITS Lobster post:

BTW, we ate breakfast with a French Acadian who loves seafood too and he said his favorite way to cook fish is to boil it. I never heard of that, but he said it is wonderful. We will give it a try sometime.
Yeah, that sounds about right for the Maxwells-- just boil all of the flavor out of everything and that way you won't make an idol out of food.

And how chatty is Steve; he is a completely different man. I wonder what happened to make him so terse and bad-temper sounding in the more recent posts.

Isn't that a stereotype of what Brits do to food, specifically vegetables? Just a thought that struck me.

All these photos on the blog are weird, but at least we know what the Maxwells look like and can run if (Heaven forbid) we ever bumped into them. I imagine that the same people go to the Leavenworth County Fair every year so know who the Maxwells are.

That's a point, actually, that people sometimes discuss about the Duggars. Obviously a lot of people have heard of the Duggars (comparatively speaking) and even more so since the Joshgates. Outside of FJ and the blog readers, how many people would actually know who they are? Like, are they "fundie royalty"? I'd hazard a "yes" seeing as they're quite an "old" family- the oldest Maxwell kid is only about ten years younger than Jim Boob- and they were probably pioneers of the using-textbooks-in-homeschooling movement.
