Curious, now I have to have those tri-color pencils!

I ordered the 25 pencil pack or whatever it was from amazon because the 12 color one was nice, but I wanted a better mix of options.

I must say that I LOVE them and I've also found that there are several other kinds of multi-color pencils out there. I blew my coloring budget with my last amazon order, so have to wait until next month to try any of the other kinds, but try them I shall!

I'll report back here once I do, of course :)

Tomorrow I have a meeting just across the road from a big art supplies store. After reading all you people posted here, I plan to stop by and buy all the gel pens and the brush tip pens I can find :D

I am now completely addicted to coloring. I bought a book of art deco patterns. It's so relaxing that I can just sort of zone out. Right now I am using gel pens and a prismacolor student set of pencils I found at a junk shop for $3. The pencils are awesome and I even bought a little blender tool and watched a few youtube videos.

When I was growing up- were never ever colored at home. Only at school and a few times at church. I always wanted to take art but it was over $100 for the supplies. So my parents decided choir was the way to go because it only cost $10 a year. So now coloring is the extent of my artistic ability- but it is really fun and I have seen some amazing coloring!

Thanks GeecheeGirl. I feel so stupid, and thought I was the only one who could stress over starting what is touted as a stress relieving activity :?

my anxiety takes over a lot when I am coloring too. It sucks. I just stop that page and work on another or stop all together. so I usually have more then one page going.

Anxiety is a heartless bitch

Hello, my name is BlackSheep and I have a problem.

I just got home from Catan's.

The colored pencil selection at Michael's was thin. What I bought there a few days ago quickly became "not enough".

Catan's was a gold mine by comparison. What I came home with:

* 20 more Prismacolor pencils, including more varieties of each color, a few more greys (never knew that there are "warm" and "cool" greys), 2 charcoal pencils for sketching shapes, and a colorless blending pencil (can't wait to try this).

* 1 kneadable eraser

* 2 acid-free sketchbooks - 1 small square for practicing/brainstorming, and 1 medium rectangular for (hopefully) making some lovely pictures. (The coloring books, as awesome as they are, sometimes leave me wanting to create my own shapes.)

* small clear pencil boxes to hold different color families (red/orange, yellow/green, blue/purple, neutrals, and what I call "utility" - the colorless blending pencil, the charcoal pencils, and my mechanical pencil)

* a clear plastic case with a carrying handle, which holds all of the above, except for the sketchbooks, plus my pencil sharpeners

Mr. BlackSheep is headed home right now from a business trip. When he gets here, he won't believe how my area of the living room has become a small art studio. :o

I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Since she has a lot of downtime now between chemotherapy treatments she's taken up coloring again. It helps her pass the time and take her mind off her illness.

Add me to the anxiety crew. I stress over color combinations sometimes. Overall, I still love it and currently addicted.

I also stress out over the small intricate details, ugh. Why can't I ever fully do something for fun?

It is tough to turn off the rules that we have been told (verbally or more subtly) since childhood. Color inside the lines. Your clothes have to match. Play nice with everyone - but (somehow) be true to yourself at the same time. Do your best no matter what. You get graded in school and reviewed at work. Will I pass the class? Will I get the raise? Like Lisa Simpson, anything less than an A can seem like a total failure.

Recently I started teaching myself how to draw with colored pencils. My first subject was a pear. I found a photo of a beautiful one via Google. You would not believe how many fine details go into the skin of a pear! I was dissatisfied. It just looked so... wrong.

So I turned the page of my sketchbook, and used YouTube videos to learn how to draw pine trees. I was so pleased with the results! :)

The next day I looked at my pear again, planning to mourn it a bit. And you know what? Having stepped back from it, I realized that it wasn't so bad after all. It wasn't photo-realistic, as I'd hoped, but it's a darn good pear for a beginner. So don't judge your work too quickly, and especially not too harshly. Be kind to yourself and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Because in hindsight, those "mistakes" might not be so bad... and in the long run, you will see that they were stepping stones to progress.

Color outside the lines! Make mistakes! Be bold with your pencil/brush/whatever! Unlike school and work, you get endless chances to make mistakes and to learn from them. And you get to choose what you like to do. Oh, pears aren't working for you? Then don't draw pears anymore. :D

I have always wanted to be able to draw, but suck at it. I have a friend that is an amazing artist and she says anyone can draw/paint/whatever all it takes is practice. I've shown her my little doodles and she always finds something nice to say about them.

I was practicing every day, but now I'm mostly just coloring. I'll go back to drawing at some point though and then I'll be able to color my drawings as well ;)

On a supplies note, I picked up some Woodless Colored Pencils because I was intrigued by how they work mostly. The thought of a woodless pencil seems to weird. I really love them, though. The colors are brighter and they are very smooth. They also keep a point better longer, as advertised. I have yet to have to sharpen one, even after using some of them for relatively large areas/on multiple pages.

I love this!! I just got into coloring as well! I bought those fancy Prismacolor colored pencils and I'm in love with the Johanna Basford coloring books! I actually pre-ordered her next one coming out in October! I have anxiety and chronic pain and going through some other personal stuff and I find coloring to be a very useful and healthy ;-) coping mechanism and distraction!

Coloring books was a childhood passion of mine. I've recently returned to this pastime. I'm finding it's a great stress reliever and a perfect way to decompress after a long day at school. I'm currently working through Balance and Animal Designs.

I've been trying to get my hands on Johanna Basford's Enchanted Forest & Enchanted Garden, but they've been backordered for weeks. Who else enjoys coloring?

My daughter and I have recently started colouring together again (she's 11, so it's been a few years). It's a great excuse to spend time together and chat.

She's doing the Enchanted Forest book and it's absolutely stunning. Really something special. I'm doing a book of mandalas but looking forward to a book of Bollywood inspired patterns next.

The colouring is very enjoyable but I've really found it wonderful as an excuse to sit down and relax with my daughter for an extended period and hear about her thoughts and her life.

I have been in the hospital for the past two weeks a d two different friends sent me "grown up" coloring books and I was so excited! I did not know it was a trend.

I have soent many hours coloring with my neices and nephews.

I have found my coloring books very therapeutic while being inpatient. They are pretty great!!

I got the Secret Garden coloring book today. I also purchased water color pencils at Joanns.

FYI: Joanns mobile app has a 50% off one item so it might be a good time to stock up on supplies. They also have coloring book.

  • 2 weeks later...

I purchased an animal themed one a month ago and love it. I’m more into organic shapes then geometric designs. I use gel pens, I prefer them over my artist quality colored pencils.

I have my eye on this coloring book ( and half a dozen others) and I would love some felt tip pens too.

I have this book!  The flesh tones have been challenging.  I will scan and post one of my creations when I am not at work.

Johanna Basford's new coloring book, Lost Ocean, will be released on October 27th, if you are living in the US. I believe it is already released in the UK/Australia.

I have both of Johanna's books, and I even got my mom hooked on adult coloring books.

My Game of Thrones coloring book (and a couple others) arrived today!

Crayola colored pencils might be the best value, but they still suck. They break all the time!

Yay for coloring book arrival.   I have ever colored pencil brand out there, I think (except prismacolor) and I've never had one break even when applying a fair amount of pressure.    I wonder if you got a defective batch.    I just bought some at AC Moore for 7.99 (I think the brand was Nicole) and even though they were pretty cheap, they are very smooth when coloring.

Reminds me of the one Simpsons scene with Dr. Hibbert about to give one of the kids a M*A*S*H coloring book but starts looking at it and walks away with it.  "Hawkeye's antics annoy the other surgeons."

Next time I'm at Costco I think I'll have to see if they have colored pencils there.

They break after I sharpen them. Like, the lead is broken further up the pencil and then it just falls out.
