Coloring for Grownups

Geechee Girl

Coloring books was a childhood passion of mine. I've recently returned to this pastime. I'm finding it's a great stress reliever and a perfect way to decompress after a long day at school. I'm currently working through Balance and Animal Designs.

I've been trying to get my hands on Johanna Basford's Enchanted Forest & Enchanted Garden, but they've been backordered for weeks. Who else enjoys coloring?

Omg!!! I just ordered the first book you mentioned (h/t TheSkimm) and I love it!!! It actually does help with stress, relaxing, and decompressing. The only downside is people think "Adult Coloring Book" means it has penises or something. :? :O

I've been into this recently for my disabled cousin (he lives with me). I've been ordering from Dover Publications because they have such a huge selection. My cousin has been doing cars, animals, and nature scenes. I ended up getting a fashion one for myself, and it's still as much fun as when I was a kid. We prefer colored pencils, but my cousin has taken to outlining the more detailed pictures with felt tip markers.

I started ordering from Dover after not finding much in stores thAt isn't geared toward six year old girls. We also type "adult coloring pages" into any search engine for something new now and then.

That would be quite the challenge to colour!!!!

Do y'all use a particular type of colored pencils? I'm looking for a decent mid-range set of good quality. Ideally somewhere between pencils for children and the high-end pro artist tools. As for markers, have you found that they bleed through the pages?

The paper quality on the ones we are using is good, so no bleed at all. I bought the singing all dancing most expensive felt tip pens I could find because I'm stupid and always believe expensive is better  My friend bought the local supermarket kiddies felt tip pens and they are way better! They do borrow my metallic colours though.

We're using crayola brand, which suits our needs just fine. We also have crayon a markers, which don't bleed, but the paper quality of the book is probably also a factor.

Edited because I hit submit too quickly and did not proofread.

Wow, I was just thinking about this a few weeks ago and impulse-ordered a paint-by-numbers kit I have yet to use. I'm sure it will make an appearance in Shit I Fucked Up eventually.

I'll check the coloring books out.

I recently (sometime last year) pulled out an adult coloring book I had bought over a decade ago. I had only colored a couple of the pages so there were plenty left. Then for my husband's birthday last year I bought him another one since he had been expressing lust over mine (and I didn't want to share). I'm not very artistic as far as creating my own pictures goes, so coloring is a great alternative and outlet for creativity.

Thanks for the tips! It's nice to hear I can use Crayola products without worry.

I use Crayola twistables (had them already - they're also good for Bible highlighting and such because there is no bleed through).

I also pin a lot of adult coloring pages to Pinterest.

I forgot about the Shit I Fucked Up Sub-Forum! I was thinking "how bad can one fuck up coloring?" but I haven't finished my first page, so when I do, I'll make sure to post it.

My dads wife swears by it that is destresses her while one conference calls. It looks like something that could pass some time. I want to try it now too!

I found the coloring book that a friend has sent me in a swap just yesterday. I'm finishing up the second page, have added a few to my amazon cart, and I'm going to look at the prices for colored pencils and gel/felt tip pens tomorrow at Target.

I'm slowly working my way through a book of patterns. It takes me forever to get started on a new page because I want to choose the right color palette.

I recently started coloring too. Even before I had a kid, I would go to the store and look for good kid coloring books and just recently I heard about the adult ones. I bought several on Amazon and a big pack of colored pencils. I hide my colors and books from my 4 year old, though!

I just started coloring as well. I ordered my book, gel pens and colored pencils from Amazon. So happy to see other adults enjoy coloring.

Ahh! We've been talking about coloring in other threads and someone suggested we start a dedicated one, so I came here to do that and found we already have one....yay!

I personally like the Creative Haven brand coloring books. I have several other kinds of adult ones (and a bunch of kids ones), but like the paper quality and design details in the CH books the best.

Here is a link to amazons CH selection: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_kk_2?rh= ... 1442049694

I have an embarrassing amount of coloring books, but I will list the ones I have in case people have questions about any of them. I will also link the pens and stuff I use.

Creative Haven Books:

Art Nouveau Animal Designs

Creative Cats

Naturescapes

Wild Animal Portraits

Sea Life (Color by number)

Incredible Insect Designs

Paisley Pattern (4 in 1 book)

Nature Mandelas

Wildlife (Color by number)

Amazon Animals

Animal Mosaics

Beautiful Butterfly Designs (the image below is from this book)

Horses (Color by number)

Awesome Animal Designs

Arabesque Designs

Exotic Birds

Wild Animals (color by number)

Here are some of the other books I have that aren't CH:

Adult Animal Designs: http://www.amazon.com/Adult-Coloring-Bo ... ring+books

Animals: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Coloring ... ring+books

Nature Mandelas: http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Mandalas-C ... ring+books

Garden Party: http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Party-Flow ... ring+books (I like the designs in this one well enough, but I didn't pay attention and it has designs on both sides of the page, which I don't like.)

Baby Animals: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/048643 ... ailpages00

Wild Animals: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/048625 ... ailpages00

Carousel Animals: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/048640 ... ailpages00

I notice that the prices on many of these books has dropped quite a bit since I first started buying them, as well. (My husband will be thrilled to find this out :shifty-kitty: )

As I was going through the link above to make the list of which books I have, I see they have added a ton of new ones to their selection /whimper (My husband will be thrilled about this, too) ;)

Coloring Supplies:

Crayola Metallic FX Colored Pencils

Crayola Extreme Colored Pencils

Crayola 24ct mini twistable crayons

Crayola 152ct crayons

Cra-Z-art Colored Pencils, 72 Count

Crayola 30ct Twistables Colored Pencils

Tri Tone 12 pencil set: http://www.amazon.com/Koh-I-Noor-Triton ... ed+pencils (I don't think this is the exact colors I have. I got mine from Michael's. They are really fun, IMO, though).

Pro Art Bullet Point Marker Set 100ct: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0025T ... ge_o06_s00 (these are nice markers, but they are really only good for large areas, IMO. I thought the bullet tip would be ok for smaller areas, but I find it too wide, personally)

Sargent Art 22-1520 Washable Brush Tip Markers, 20 Count: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MC ... ge_o06_s00

Pentel Felt Tip Sign Pen, Set of 12 Assorted Colors: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006 ... ge_o06_s00

Paper Mate Flair Porous-Point Felt Tip Pen, Medium Tip: http://www.amazon.com/Paper-Mate-Porous ... t+tip+pens

I attached this image in the other thread to show how the gel pens I have look (the compression on this image has not done it any favors colorwise, but you can see how the pens fill in well enough)

I love the Joanna basford ones, but they're very detailed and you have to be dedicated to coloring in EVERY LITTLE LEAF. It wound up being very high maintenance for me but it might be good for others!

Wow that's a ton of coloring books! I can totally see how easy it is to end up with a whole collection though, I just ordered my first ones and ended with 3 just from the start lol. I ordered the cities book I linked in the first thread plus two of these books https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/14494720 ... UTF8&psc=1

Now I just have to wait till Tuesday for everything to arrive so I can finally start using all this stuff lol
