It seems to me that they are setting it up for X-Files: The Next Generation, with Einstein and Miller (is that the right name?) as the main characters.

That was what I was thinking too.  As soon as I saw the preview for the episode that they first appeared in, I thought, those two are being branded for a spin-off.
