David Goldberg death WTF

SurveyMonkey CEO (and husband of Sheryl Sandberg) David Goldberg died after slipping on a treadmill at the Four Seasons in Punta Mita, Mexico and hitting his head.

Or not. According to the Four Seasons, the incident never happened on its property and he wasn't a guest.

WTF?? His family was staying there, they found him in the gym, the local officials investigated, and the hotel denies that he was ever there? Surely, if it was just a mix up over the hotel name or location, somebody would have figured it out by now? How do you just deny that this happened?

That sounds like a really stupid move on the side of FS StratComm...

Could just be an error in reporting or translation.

That would be some error since this has been a major story—the way he died—since early this morning, if not earlier. CBS This Morning ran a story on it. If it was simply an error in translation or reporting surely it would have been corrected by now.

Maybe he was registered under another name and the person who says he was never there is dumb?

So here's the denial from the Four Seasons, from a Reuters article:

The general manager at the Four Seasons said that Goldberg had not been a guest and that the accident had not taken place at the Four Seasons.

The New York Times added an addendum to their original story:

An earlier version of this article misstated Mr. Goldberg’s location at the time of his death. He was at a private villa near the Four Seasons Resort, not at the Four Seasons itself

I think it happened the way that they originally said it did (he fell off the treadmill and hit his head), but there's a degreed law professionalTM that's attempting to get fancy about it to avoid a lawsuit and bad press. Either he was not staying at the Four Seasons Hotel proper, or he was there under an assumed name.

Assumed name, booked under a corporate account, or he was staying at a villa owned by a corporation or something of the sort. Either way, it really sucks.
