My Secret Fundie Life

I do have a maxi skirt that I've worn in the summer, as well as a couple of maxi dresses, but with the dresses, my shoulders are bare, so that's not completely fundie. I'm also slightly busty, so I'll wear a cami under a v-neck top because I don't like the idea of showing off my cleavage that much. For swimming, I tend to wear a tankini and sometimes the bottoms are boxer short styles because my upper thighs tend to burn easily. I've even thought about getting board shorts because they provide more sun protection. Still, I don't get mistaken as a fundie or even a Mormon much because I would rather wear pants or shorts most of the time. When I dress up, I prefer to wear slacks, except for my maxi dresses that show off my shoulders. I do know that when I get married, I want to have a dress with straps of some type because I'm too worried about having a wardrobe malfunction so I'm not into the whole strapless dress fad.

I also like to cook, but some things I like aren't exactly stuff fundies would like because I like to try new foods from various cultures, and when I tried sushi, I loved it.

Maybe we don't owe our fundie tendencies to the Duggars so much as to current trends. Modest and old-fashioned are in style now, thanks to hipsters. All the beard love, lumbersexual, vintage, home crafts things. I honestly think most random people, especially if they aren't already religious, seeing a Duggar snarker being crunchy would just mistake them for hipsters or earth-mamas vs. being perceived as fundies. Even in high class fashion modesty is in - Kate Middleton's wedding dress was very conservative, as are her clothes in general. Back in the '90's when fundies were stylin' homemade jumpers made of cotton quilt material and puffy-sleeve blouses with pilgirm collars, yeah there was no mistaking THAT was religious. The Duggars' current style is easy to find in any store these days. They're just lucky to have hit a cycle of modesty in everyday fashion. Even 15 years ago long slim skirts (with huge slits to the thigh, but still - long) with Doc Marten mary janes, those skirts were available off the rack. If we snarkers were suddenly all wanting to wear victorian puff sleeves and jumpers then we could say it was because of the Duggars back when they first started their show

I'm so glad for hipsters though. Vintage is just something that i love, and if it's popular it's easier to find.

LOL! This totally sounds like me! I have a nice bruise on my knee at the moment - no clue how I got it or when. It's just there, hanging out and making my knee look cool.

I'm currently considering chopping off my hair after our Honeymoon to donate it to Locks of Love. I want to have my hair long enough to have it be at least shoulder length after its cut. I'll have to check out their website or something to see how long it'll need to be.

Lol! Now I'm picturing the Dinosaurs from "Fantasia" dancing with the Hippo Ballerinas. My life is complete now.

Here's some less than flatterning information about Locks of Love, you might want to consider donating via a different organization. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/1 ... 69078.html

I'm so happy that you will being living the life. I love gardening and cooking and baking bread. I've even made laundry soap just like Michelle. Just can't sew. It brings out my inner rage.

KittenMitten, learning to sew is practically daydreaming for me yet, but dressmaking fascinates me. I'm much better with prepping and other forms of witchery. I read in one topic that someone's sewing machine keeps boogieing and won't stop and I literally turned pale and was like, omg. I will never be able to handle a sewing machine. I also like making bijou jewelry, but I guess growing food (including keeping chickens and quails since we love quail egg) and prepping food is more important. I also want to live in a gardening or farming area and get to know other gardeners or farmers and trade food, as much as possible. When and if I will have any free time left, I want to make jewelry, learn new stuff, if sewing is beyond my abilities then learn pottery, I tried that before and I didn't blow at it. So I don't wanna sit around at home, I think growing and making food is just as much of a valid form of breadwinning as bringing home paper or digital money. Oh, I also love cheesemaking. Well, a long as we get along. I do steal recipes from fundies' and crazy preppers' blogs. I keep the good stuff.

I hate skirts, especially long ones , last person in my life to wear those was my primary school math teacher in her 60s.

I am absolutely useless at anything to do with a thread and needle(s).

I have gothard hair. It's not really intentional, it's just that I like long hair. Mine is almost to my waist and curly. It frizzes really easy so after I shower I just put leave in conditioner and let it dry naturally. I end up with big soft curls. So yeah, Gothard would be proud.

Yeah pretty much the only redeemable quality about the Duggars, is the girl's beautiful long hair, of which I am growing mine out now.

I would LOOK at home in the Duggar family. I NEVER wear pants , mostly wear long skirts and my hair is long, because that is how I like it.:) Not a fan of my arms, so I am never sleeveless as well. I am part of a pretty progressive organization and at an early meeting someone who I work with said she didn't know what to make of me because I looked like "that crazy Christian family with millions of kids on TV" but my politics were the opposite of that, lol. This is DEFINITELY my choice though. I grew up in a family where my mom would dress me in jeans as a kid, got me race cars, etc, etc. I'm just feminine , lol. I would also raise my kid like my mom, exposing them to everything, and letting them decide where they fit on the gender spectrum.

I have family members that are strict pentecostal and as I attended their church I wore skirts alot but still wore jeans when I wanted to. About 3 years ago I was heavy, and I literally outgrew my last pair of jeans and the only thing that fit me was my skirts. So for 3 years I wore nothing but skirts until last month. Last month I was at a friends house and got something spilled on my skirt. She lent me a pair of jeans she said and they were size 14 and they fit! I hadn't wore that size in almost 20 years-- I wasn't even aware how much weight I had lost as a skirt hides your bottom half of your body. I looked good and was so proud of my new found body that I went and bought me 6 pairs of jeans.

I don't consider my "housewifey" chores to be fundie. I consider them to be necessary in order to have a nice home and keep my home looking great!

The maxi-skirt love I feel goes back to my high school days when mini's, hot pants, maxi's and midi's were all over the place:)

I love wearing maxi skirts and dresses in the summer because I can sit any way that I want and remain comfy. I like to remain stylish though and always question "Ohhh...I HOPE this doesn't look Duggarish"!

I second this.

In 2013, I donated about 9 inches of hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. They are non-profit and accept donations that Locks of Love might otherwise reject. When you go to send it, they tell you to put a personal note inside if you want to receive a thank you letter for the donation. I opted not to do this because I didn't care about the recognition.. But I still received a beautiful letter thanking me and telling me how the hair would be used. I still have the letter.

It was a fantastic experience and I'm actually growing my hair out again and will be donating again-- hopefully before it gets too hot! :)

*Apologies for the very long quote.. Still trying to figure out how to do that properly!

Today, I saw those skirts with the chevron pattern at Target and thought about buying one. I opted for athletic wear instead.

Hi, My name is GrandmaDugger, and I lead a secret fundie life.

Ok, so I wear pants and my hair is short. Well it is now but I'm growing out because that's just what I do. Long then short and so on and so on. I do dye it.

I do like skirts and dresses and wear them on the weekends. I don't like showing off my cleavage. If I did a deep V-neck shirt I might give some poor man or woman a heart attack. Also I'm not comfortable dressed that way.

I sew, I knit, I crochet, and I quilt. I'm even trying to become a full-time blogger about my quilting. All but one of my sewing machines were bought used. I have 33 of them.

I cook almost daily from scratch. I make my own bread but I don't grind my flour. I found an amish bulk store near by that sells it stoneground cheaper than I can make it.

I buy used and save the difference. Today I was at an auction. Spent 7 bucks and came home with 4 pyrex pie plates and box full of embossing powder, stamp pads, and scrapbook paper. We hit a garage sale, from a storage unit and for $30 came home with a sewing machine cabinet, a photo mat cutter, a magnifying lamp, 2 more pyrex pans, a trash bag full of material, 2 huge packs of scrapbook paper, and some safety switch thing my husband wanted. Oh and there was the church garage sale that was everything in a paper bag, 2 bags for 2 bucks. I bought enough plaid shirts to do a plaid shirting quilt. I felt kind of like JB totaling up what I spent vs. what I saved. lol

The only thing that I do now that I didn't do before the Duggars was buy used and save the difference. I hit one Goodwill after watching a Duggar special just to see what it was all about. I bought a skirt, with the tags still on, for $3 and had bought the same skirt two weeks before in a different color for $30. My eyes were opened. :D
