Azucar Bakery owner Marjorie Silva refused to make a Bible-shaped cake complete with strong anti-gay wording and imagery.

Azucar Bakery found itself in hot waters over the message that was meant to go on a Bible-shaped cake, reported Out Front Colorado. The staff at the South Broadway spot refused to write "God hates homosexuality" and other anti-LGBT text and imagery on a cake that a man attempted to order.

The man came in and began ordering a cake. After he found an image of a Bible-shaped cake to his liking, he showed the bakery employees the message he wanted displayed on the cake, the gist of which is hateful toward the gay community. Uncomfortable with the incident, owner Marjorie Silva offered to make the Bible-shaped cake and sell to the customer a decorating bag so he can complete whatever message he wanted himself. He immediately threatened legal action and left. He returned twice and had to be "excused" by the owner's brother the last time.

The man filed a discrimination complaint Colorado's Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Silva received a letter from the agency and had to reply to it. This is her reply, in part:

I can ... tell you that the customer wanted us to draw two males holding hands ... with a big ‘X' on them. I told him that we do not like to discriminate in this bakery, we accept all humans and that the message and drawing is extremely rude.

Silva still needs to file a final letter with DORA. The agency will then make its decision within 30 days.

What complete and utter malarkey. Some people are so self-absorbed she even tried to a accommodate him. Does he really think he's right?

I think the man thinks he is terribly clever. He is trying to turn the tables. "Look at me! I am maryter! I am being PERSECUTED! I have rights! I have the right to be a hateful ass hat!"

Really setting the world on fire, that one.

She was set up. This reeks of retaliation for the bakers sued for refusing to comply with the law about not discriminating against same-sex couples. Laws protect people from hate. Making a cake for Jack and John isn't hate, but words that the article won't even specify is hate.

He won't get very far with this. I hope. Isn't she within her rights to refuse him as a customer? Or is he claiming it's because he's (insert religion/belief system here)?

He is less clever than he thinks he is and probably won't get far with this because refusing to create a certain type of cake isn't the same as refusing to serve an entire group of people. A local bakery near me has a whole lists of things that they won't put on cakes and it includes any hate-speech.

It's a set up to get attention and publicity. This guy was never going to be accommodated..he wanted the refusal in order to file a complaint. Now he is going to show us how unfair it is that the baker can't be forced to write hate speech on a cake.

They are so predictable and boring.

It's a bullshit complaint that doesn't fall within the definition of discrimination under Colorado law. I'm surprised that they even bothered to send her a letter.

To file a complaint, you need to say that discrimination occurred because of your "protected class". Homophobic assholes are not a protected class.

Yeah, but she didn't refuse to serve him because he was Christian, she refused to make a cake with hate-speech. Of course the "evil gay people persecute innocent Christians" type of people will refuse to see this, but that is the difference between the situations. She was going to make the man a cake and sell it to him, she would even give him the supplies to write whatever the hell he wants on it, she just did not make cakes that contained hate-speech.

Exactly. The Bible cake wasn't a problem.

This reminds me of when that family in New Jersey named all of their children after Nazis, then got mad when a bakery refused to decorate a cake for little Adolf Hitler's 3rd birthday. It did not end well for the parents.

"Every life is precious"

While this statement is true, when people like the Duggars use it, I get very angry.

If every life is so precious, WHY are you trying to revoke the rights of every minority group where you turn?

Hopefully someone relays this to the douche canoe that wanted that cake and then continues to prove the point that he is a massive hypocrite!

Those parents were scary. Adolf Hitler, a daughter named Aryan Nation, and I can't remember the other names. That's some major dedication to being bigoted assholes.

Classic attention seeking and publicity stunt by the Christian right. I would like to tell him where he can stick that cake.
