Joseph Duggar starts College

They have to do something with all of those boys from Joseph on down. And they'll be hitting 18 one after another soon enough.

I had Joseph pegged as a tradesman type, but I guess there isn't any Vocational School of the Bible where one studies Biblical foundations while developing HVAC skills.

They do have some stuff like that there, engine repair and something else, so.... maybe!

Interesting. But if Boob has that much money to toss at Joseph's engine repair schooling, I may need to find myself a Duggar boy to marry.

I scanned through their catalogue and didn't see much in the way of trades. If Joseph is going there, he is training to be a minister or a missionary. Those types of courses take up 90% of the catalogue. I suppose at least he will get some kind of proper theology, instead of the 400th telling of the baby bible stories according to Jim Bob.

I noticed their silly dating rules.

http://www.stufffundieslike.com/2012/01 ... e-edition/

Christ Almighty, they have to have permission from the parents and administration to date a person of another skin color. My God, I am aghast.

As a Christian (and a damn liberal one, too) I am disgusted that these fearful, controlling bigots call themselves Christians.

For fucks sake, this isn't the 50's.

Rant. Over.

Weird.

If he wasn't staying with the Bates family, would he have a roommate? What would the Duggars think of that? Who knew what the roommate would say to him?

based on what the college claims their beliefs are, I have no doubt in my mind that any person attending Crown College would be Duggar approved.

I really would have expected Josiah to be the first to go to college.

Do we know that Joseph is there alone. I believe the first leaking was connected to his birthday and what he's been up to recently not a general announcement. Is it possible that both Joseph and Josiah are attending together?

I'm sure he's either living with the Bateses or someone else they know. No way would they just send him there alone. There has to be 'accountability'.

It is confirmed on the Duggar Official FB.

Jim Bob decided he wanted to do his own post for Joseph's birthday! So from dad: Joseph turned 20 on the 20th! He is such a great, diligent young man. He typically gets up early at 5 am and prays and studies his Bible for over an hour. Joseph has just started going to Crown Bible College in Knoxville, Tennessee. He loves teaching and discipling young men, encouraging them to make wise choices in their lives. God is going to use Joseph in a mighty way to share His love and Bible principles to today's world! We are very pleased with his choices so far. We love you, son.

it is a college, they tried to recruit me (heck to the no) but they don't have many strong programs outside of religion, at least it's something. Powell is a good small town though, he could really grow there!

Well, he is away from his parents and can at least get his footing to be an adult instead of getting married and getting thrown out there on his own AKA Josh.

"Interracial dating must be approved in writing and verbally by the parents of both students"

:pink-shock: Seriously?? :cray-cray: I just hope a newspaper will pick that one up.

Not trying to sound like a asshole but I don't see many blacks or Hispanics or Asians at these type of colleges anyway. And why can't interracial couples date? Why does it need to be approved?

This is pretty exciting. FREEDOM? Even if it comes from a weird ultra-religious unaccredited college...go Joseph! As much as I hate that the girls in the family don't get the same opportunity, I guess I can't necessarily hold that against him.

I wonder where he's living, too. Would the Bates family really be OK with letting him move in? Would they even have the space? It is hard for me to imagine him living on campus - but how great would it be if he and a Bates guy went there together and got an apartment? I'm getting carried away with optimism...

As bad as fundie college is its better than sitting at home waiting for daddy to marry you off. At least he has a bit of freedom and doesn't share a room with 10 year olds

"There are NO dating privileges for soul-winning or church ministries."

Wow. What a rule. It is most certainly laughable, however, in my "fundie lite" upbringing, I did know a college-age missionary who later admitted he voluntoured his way through several international girlfriends on the dime of hard-working 'Mericans who believed they were supporting a worthwhile cause. I can see Crown College terrified of the tempting knees of those loose Knoxville girls and, heaven forbid, Catholic heathens!!

After further burning my eyes by reading that, I doubt Joseph is courting a Bates girl. The Clown moral enforcers would not accept a single man staying within the same household as a single, unrelated lady, even if they were the offspring of ATI/IBLP royalty, and their impending marriage and procreation would unite the clans and end world tragedy, i.e. lady pants and liberalism...

Probably because the school doesn't want to get sued by racist parents for not properly supervising their little purebred darlings (think Malfoys).

This raises all sorts of interesting questions. How is "race" defined in this context? If one student has a white mother and a black father and his date has a black mother and a white father, are they allowed to date? If one has an African American grandparent is it okay for him to date white girls? Or is 25% enough to keep him in the black pool? My college roommate was half Korean and half Irish and had red hair, blue eyes and freckles. Do appearances matter? Who would someone like this be allowed to date? Is a very dark-skinned Pakistani who is technically Caucasian allowed to date white girls? Or must he stick with someone with a similar skin tone?

We could go on like this all night. I'm sure the good folks at the Clown don't encounter these sorts questions too often, but it would be fun to visit them with my high school age daughter and inquire. I wonder how many heads would explode in confusion before we were escorted to the door.

Uhhh, gonna go out on a limb here and say "race" to CC means two people who don't look like they BOTH come from the same 5-7 purebred (Malfoys-hilarious!) ATI families. Don't think it gets more scientific or intellectual than that...I also don't think I'm reaching in saying that Gothard and his doctrines were impressively racist. But that may be unfair. We all know he is such a *great* man otherwise...

Wrong!!!! Guess what? Crown College started that very thing in 2013: The Crown School of Trades & Technology: http://crowntradesandtech.com/

The only major offered so far is auto repair (+bible studies, natch).

I think that is very possible that this is what is Joseph is studying. It is also possible that he is studying for the 1 year "preaching" certification that one of the Bates boys is allegedly studying.

Tori Bates, by the way, is an education major at Crown, according to her mother. I think she turns 19 soon, and according to past comments from Kelly, she started classes at Crown before she finished homehighschool.

Also-- Crown now has a study abroad/annoy the locals semester in Birmingham:

That would make for some interesting reality TV!

In addition to lawsuits, the college probably doesn't want any drama with hysterical parents showing up and threatening to pull their kids out of school in the middle of the semester, or equally hysterical kids begging the school to give them a scholarship so they can stay.

My guesses in red (as to the CC stance):

Probably because the school doesn't want to get sued by racist parents for not properly supervising their little purebred darlings (think Malfoys).

This raises all sorts of interesting questions. How is "race" defined in this context? If one student has a white mother and a black father and his date has a black mother and a white father, are they allowed to date?

Yes, both students are the same race (black)

If one has an African American grandparent is it okay for him to date white girls?

No, this student is black so cannot date white girls

Or is 25% enough to keep him in the black pool?

Yes

My college roommate was half Korean and half Irish and had red hair, blue eyes and freckles. Do appearances matter? Who would someone like this be allowed to date?

Must date someone also Korean....might be able to get away with another Asian

Is a very dark-skinned Pakistani who is technically Caucasian allowed to date white girls?

Or must he stick with someone with a similar skin tone?

No white girls. Also, they probably wouldn't even allow a Pakistani to attend....you know ebil Muslim and all...

We could go on like this all night. I'm sure the good folks at the Clown don't encounter these sorts questions too often, but it would be fun to visit them with my high school age daughter and inquire. I wonder how many heads would explode in confusion before we were escorted to the door.

I assume that Joseph is occupying Zach's empty bunk at the Bates house.

I find it odd that he started in the spring semester, not the fall semester.

What is up with that?

Convenience, probably. I started university in the spring semester and know others who have (of course it may be more unusual in the States). Anyway, I'm guessing this was a fairly recent decision given his age. He wasn't planning on this before graduating high school. He probably decided to go too late to start in the fall.
