It's really awful. I've been following it today and I just feel horrible for France right now. And last I heard the gunmen are still at large.

12 people dead for a cartoon. It's so unbelievable.

It is not for a cartoon. It is for everything the cartoons said, what they mocked, what they denounced.

I am French. I often found Charlie Hebdo's cartoons vulgar, sometimes outrageous or shocking, and I disagreed with them.

But today I understood what "freedom of expression" means. What democracy means. What common values mean. Yes, I disagreed with some cartoons, so what?? Let them express themselves and let the ones who disagree express themselves in return. With words, drawings… Not with blood. What you're doing here, with this website, is also a celebration of freedom of expression (I've been reading here for years).

Everyone was following this the whole day here too. It is hard to find words for it, how could this happen in the heart of Europe?

My husband went to a solidarity memorial wake at the french embassy in Vienna after work.

I think the shadow of this tragdy will now be on all of our side for quite a long time from now.

It's not the first time or last someone will be killed for drawing Mohammed. Molly Norris has been in hiding for four years thanks to Everybody Draw Mohammed Day, and I doubt she will ever be able to live openly again.

These fanatics are fucking crazy.

If everybody did do that, what would the extremists do...kill billions of people?

Maybe an art project for the weekend for me...

Welcome! I was concearned because I have family in Paris.

Did I read it correctly that he challanged and taunted the people who threatened him? I thought he said things like "it's been six months and you have not done anything yet."

Trying to get the big picture.

It's not about the comic/cartoon.

By murdering these particular high-profile people for their religion in this particular way, they expect and welcome retaliation. Then when innocent people who are injured or have family members killed in retaliation are alienated from mainstream society for practicing Islam, they seek comfort with the extremists.

Or something like that. Extremists like this might be genuine in their beliefs, however, the choice to commit these crimes only increases their numbers over time. And that's what they really want. They 100% want the anti-Islam backlash that causes new young people to become radical.

That was exactly the point of Everybody Draw Mohammed Day. It didn't go so well.

It truly is a sad day. There is not much to say than has not already been said. It's just horrible. Personally, I like satire in general. In the Anglosphere, I love to read ''The Onion''. This irrévérencieux style doesn't bother me usually. Some cartoons in Charlie Hebdo were not always of good taste, just like some jokes are not always good. I understand it was not for everyone though. It's a type of humor. But I do think it has its place in our media world. It should not be silenced.

I can't understand how these cartoons could be seen as a menace? If your faith is actually threaten by a little drawing, then your faith is not very strong after all. And ironically the terrorists wanted to silence Charb, Cabu, Wolinksy and Tignous but now their cartoons are on every website and news program all over the world.

To our French cousins, I tell you: Je suis Charlie.

Blurred out, in some cases.

It's horrible. I could not stop crying. It's not only man that have been killed, it's a part of our culture.

It was satire. They mocked Islam, Judaism, Christian, Atheism, Communist, facist. But they were still from the left, and anti-racist. They believed in the power of humor. My muslisms father in law read Charlie every week, because "they're protecting muslisms from bigotry. They're protecting the prophet Mohammed from morons. This people love us and they love Islam". Please remember this when you heard that "Charlie Hebdo was islamophobic."

The vigils helds around the country and the world are amazing. There was 10 000 people in the center place of my city. I read there was 1 000 people in Montréal by -26°C ! Thank you, word.

The victims : (as you can see, they killed arab people...)

Charb

Moustapha Ourad

Cabu

Hamed Merrabet

Tignous

Wolinski

Honoré

Bernard Maris

Michel Renaud

Franck Brinsolaro

Frédéric Boisseau

Elsa Cayat

My hope ? That we don't killed the killers while arresting them.

This people want to be martyrs. They want to die. We should not give them this. They should be in prison their whole life to see Charlie Hebdo strong.

The editor in chief, Charb, was a cartoonist. His last drawing, published last week, is captioned "Still no terror attacks in France". The terrorist raises a finger: "Wait! We have until the end of January to send our greetings"

The three suspects have been identified.

a new shooting, with the author is not identified : a female police officer was killed and one wounded man (bullet in the spine).

It's 13 death now. It's the deadliest attack since 1835.

And unfortunately there has already been some retaliatory violence: http://rt.com/news/220819-attack-mosque-france-paris/

I think this kind of conflict is what the extremists want to happen.

That's too bad.

I had actually been very impressed with the reports I heard of the big demonstrations in Paris, which were overwhelmingly focused on support for the Charlie Hebdo publication and freedom of speech, and NOT on Muslim-bashing.

It is precisely what the extremists want and they know the score only too well. France has a history of right wing politics not uncommon in other European countries (Read the lovely BNP now UKIP in the UK.) Breeding grounds for extremism. They exploit the fallout of these attacks long after the public displays die down and the whispers of anti-islam or name your religion of choice begins.

When the political radicals of the past start with their sage I told you so's and their manifestos start looking like something that might protect you from a terrorist attack rather than the hate filled racist rhetoric it used to be recognised as, then the penny drops. It happens. Europe is slightly less inclined to fall down the rabbit hole of hysteria that occurs in the US but it's a fine line.

Je suis Charlie.

Obviously, there's the focus now on the manhaunt, and there will be the continuing investigation into the actual action, figuring out who else was involved, and reviewing the intelligence information and seeing what if any signs were missed.

Beyond that, though, this seems to be shaping up as a clash of views on society and freedom, as opposed to a clash between two religions or two ethnic groups.

Many religions aren't happy about blasphemy or anything that they view as mocking, and have some sort of teachings against it. Countries that are not theocracies and that have a tradition of liberal democracy, though, have created space where it is okay to have a secular sphere, where it is ok to express yourself and where people do not need to fear for their safety simply because someone takes offense.

Snark can be serious business. The power to laugh matters. That's why dictators and oppressive regimes suppress it. These guys are part of the Kim Jong Un club of comedy appreciation. The Charlie Hebdo staff knew this, and that's why they were pretty merciless to all religions and many political figures.

I see discussions happening now about WHY comedy and satire are important, why freedom of speech is important. It's not just about laughing at a joke. It's not a sign of the decadence of society. It's a feature, not a defect. We want to be really, really on guard of anyone peddling a vision of a more perfect society where everyone is so reverent that nobody says anything remotely disrespectful or blasphemous.

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

You know what I hate most about subtle racism? The gaslighting. Stop cosplaying as a nice person and say it with your chest.

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
      This is pure evil
