BBC accused of "promoting gay agenda"

The BBC have had complaints to Ofcom about a Dr Who episode featuring two women kissing. But for fuck's sake, it's a FICTIONAL TV PROGRAMME! I am sick of hearing this term "gay agenda" bandied about. WHAT agenda? As for "promoting" homosexuality, you're born gay or straight. You don't just decide to be gay or straight according to who you see snogging on telly.

Yes, I can see that it's a kids' programme and some people might feel that ANY snogging onscreen is inappropriate. But why am I getting the impression that if the kissing scenes were played by a man and a woman, nobody would give a shit?

And if they are complaining about Vastra and Jenny, that wasn't really even about kissing....it was more like CPR (and don't even start me on why that is annoying, because once you get me started on why Moffat sucks, I don't stop). Out of curiosity, were there floods of complaints when Jack kissed Nine? That was long before I started to watch (I'm a new Whovian, only been watching for a year and a half, though I have seen all of Classic that exists, all of New!Who, and all of SJA and Torchwood, so I'm fairly well versed in the world).

Not sure as I don't watch the programme myself, but I googled and I can't see anything in particular about Jack and Nine scenes.

The article said there were 3 complaints out of 7 million viewers.... I don't think the Independent was raising it as a big issue... more something amusing to report on a no-news day.

The article also said:

[tab=30]"Other complaints included the ridiculing of tall women on sitcom Miranda and a reference to cooking frogs legs on EastEnders. The Great British Bake Off was the target of ire for one viewer who felt the Hallelujah chorus was inappropriate. "

Oh I know, I just meant I was irritated by the mindset of those three specific complainers, and others like them. I mean, no one's forcing them to watch programmes that incorporate whatever it is they don't approve of! If somebody wants a TV show where nothing offends them, they should write their own script.

I haven't seen the latest dr. Who episode (though instant to) so won't say much other than kissing of any kind bothers me, whether it's guy and girl or girl and girl or guy and girl or girl and... Er, snowman. That said, I usually get over it because the rest of the works isn't asexual.

It wasn't technically a kiss. Vastra (lizard female) wasproviding air/oxygen to her human wife Jenny. So yes, two sets of female lips touched. But no, not kissing.

And there have been many more scenes with gay/pan sexual connotations in Dr Who if you care to go looking for them. Thank you Captain Jack. No idea why they're singling out this one.

Oh, and don't go anywhere near Torchwood if you are easily offended or confronted by sex of any type. That has straight, gay, alien, cyborg, time shifting, every combination of the above. Pretty much anything you can think of really. Russell T Davies is a very naughty boy. Thank goodness.

I'm surprised they weren't moaning about bestiality!

Jack was totally into both Rose and The Doctor and no one will ever convince me otherwise. The three of them would have made a great triad if the times and theme of the show would have had it make sense.

Torchwood has so. much. sex. I loved it so. RTD writes shows that speak to me and ask interesting questions. Sarah Jane Adventures were great too, even though it was a kiddie show.

So they show the sex though? I don't mind hearing about it, but to me sex is a very private act, and I'd rather not watch.

It's fairly explicit without being pornographic. Lots of hot & heavy kissing scenes, groping & fondling, bedroom scenes, naked hide-and-seek in the Torchwood headquarters for example. And in all the combinations you could imagine.

I'm okay with sex on TV as long as it is integral to the plot. Let's face it, there are many shows that would be dead without the sex, or at least sex in certain places.

That said, there are also many shows that throw it in every time they need to give the show a pulse (which is basically every scene), and that's way too over the top and excessive for me.

Oh good Lord, I love Doctor Who and it's typically a very family friendly show. So what if there is lesbian couple Vastra and Jenny are awesome, and there has never been any sort sex scene between them just it has been stated that they are married with some very mild innuendo. Yes, the Doctor has kissed men Jack and Rory come to mind, but honestly the Doctor usually comes off as a bit asexual, even though he's been married and had children. The show has managed to show the Doctor having some romantic feelings towards companions Rose for example, and even being married to River Song without showing anything more than a few on screen kisses, everything else is always implied. For a modern television series that pretty vanilla compared to where they could have gone with it The show even "danced" around using actually saying the word sex in the first season of the new series with the episode "The Doctor Dances" in which writer Steven Moffat uses dancing as a euphemism for sex. You have to be pretty uptight and sexually repressed to see Doctor Who as a sexually explicit show, LGBT friendly and at times feminist yes, but there has never been anything that anyone besides a fundie would find objectionable.

  • 2 weeks later...

I really want to find out what the gay agenda is. No-one has ever given me an agenda. I seem to be stuck on the same pathway as all my straight friends so far - paying taxes and raising children and obeying the law. Sooooooo boring.

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

You know what I hate most about subtle racism? The gaslighting. Stop cosplaying as a nice person and say it with your chest.

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
      This is pure evil
