Being a Sexually Submissive Wife Make You a 'Warrior'

This gets me because they take a book written for people that lived long ago where marriages were arranged between two people that did not even know each other for alliance and heirs and try to work it into todays life. how can a man use his wife but treat others how he wishes to be treated? how can he care for this wife feeling when he does it? It really creates a lack of respect and a spoiled child attitude.

The backlash against feminism extends into all corners of the web. A Tumblr page titled “ Women Against Feminism†even exists. There, women are seen using the very language promoted by feminists as a means to attack the movement. One post reads, “I am not oppressed. My husband is not an oppressor. My home is not a prison. My children are not a burden. Abortion is not healthcare. Drunken mistakes are not rape. My son and daughter are of equal value. Mothers and fathers are of equal importance. Intelligent people don’t need special treatment to get a job or college degree. Men and women are different… and that is a good thing!â€

Back in 2010, Sarah Palin introduced the idea of an “emerging, conservative feminist identity.†Her concept, which operates in contrast to traditional feminism, uses the very language of empowerment to promote conservative Christian ideas. The most talked about issues? You guessed it: access to contraception and abortion.

During her speech, Palin argued, "Our prominent woman sisterhood is telling these young women that they are strong enough to deal with this. They can give their child life, in addition to pursuing career and education and avocations. Society wants to tell these young women otherwise. These feminist groups want to tell these women that, 'No, you're not capable of doing both.'...It's very hypocritical."

For Palin and her likeminded brethren, upholding the traditional feminine identity is how feminism should be practiced. They argue the differences between men and women should not be erased, but highlighted, just as the notion of complementarianism preaches.

In one of the resources recommended by the Warrior Wives blog, a book titledLet Me Be A Woman, the author writes, “A torrent of books about women has been pouring from the presses urging women to cast off traditional roles, to refuse the socialization that has for so many centuries, they say, controlled and confined them, and to move into what some of them call 'human' (as distinct from biological or reproductive) pursuits, which, whether they are interesting or uninteresting are said to be male territory.â€

Something they fail to realize is being a woman is moreso a matter of biology and not how well you uphold the traditional sense of "womanhood". Also when does equal pay and equal consideration from a job mean "speshul treatment"?

Wow - to the lady you quoted who wrote on the Ladies Against Feminism tumblr: Yes, intelligent people do need "special treatment" (in her words, in the words of any other person that would be called equal opportunity and affirmative action) to get a job or college degree. Old Boys' clubs are alive and thriving in all their bigoted, racist fury.

And, just to be clear, lady on tumblr: modern feminism isn't about androgyny or making a woman be like a man. That's a ridiculous reinforcement of the original problem. It's best summed up by saying "you be you". It doesn't matter if it's being delicate or being strong. It's the freedom to be yourself without fear. I'm a feminist because i believe career choices, life choices, any choice - shouldn't be based on genitalia.

Just like Christianity has splintered into many groups with wildly different ideas about what being a "true Christian" is, I don't think that it should be surprising that there are many splinter groups within feminism. There are very few generalizations that actually apply to ALL American women, so it is hard to create a message of feminism that equally speaks to all of us. Conservative women have different ideas than liberal women do obviously, and that's just one example of one of the differences among us. Lately I've also seen a bit of a divide between white middle class feminists and feminists who are lower income women of color because these two groups often have different priorities and concerns.

In the sense that I believe in equality and support women's rights to be full participants in the career world, I am a feminist. I am very proud of my academic and career achievements and I feel that it is a tragedy when women don't get to live up to their potential in terms of getting educated or having a meaningful career. However I do NOT believe in some of the fringe stuff that is associated nowadays with "tumblr feminism". I also do not relate much to feminists who are anti-porn.

I've always seen feminism as a very simple concept. Women should have the right to the same opportunities in life as men. That's all.

It has nothing to do me or my achievements. And I don't stress about particular women not living up to their potential any more than I do about particular men not doing so. Not everyone wants or will ever have a "meaningful" career and we all need to take ownership of our individual choices. I'm concerned only with all people having the same merit-based opportunities and being treated equally and equitably as human beings regardless of sex or race or orientation.

I don't like porn, but as long as the people involved are doing it of their own free will, whatever.

And I don't disagree with that. I think a lot of people have different ideas of what that actually looks like though.

What I mean by that is that it concerns me when I see things like girls being denied the right to even be educated. It is one thing to choose to be a housewife because you honestly had a choice and just did not want to work outside the home. It is another thing to be incapable of doing anything other than housework because you were not properly educated to be capable of functioning in the working world.

I see this as one of the most tragic consequences of the fundie stuff, as well as a problem in other countries like some of the middle Eastern and African countries where girls are not considered to be worth educating.

I don't like porn, but as long as the people involved are doing it of their own free will, whatever.

I think this is how the majority feel, but there are some vocal exceptions where people take a huge issue with porn even if it is consensual.

Or, semi consensual, as what happened to me... By the which I mean, I finally agreed just so he would stop bugging me. Or is that what consent means?

  • 3 weeks later...

A little late here, but a majority of feminists feel porn objectifies and disrespects women lessening them to men's playthings much like beauty pageants. But the same thing could apply to mags like Playgirl which feature men. Anyhow, Fundies dont realize the things feminist fight for that benefit them. Feminism gives the women a right to practice their religion the way they see fit, have a dozen kids, be a SAHM eg.
