High schooler suspended after preaching claims religious per

Although I'm not clear on details, I do know that public high schools and public colleges/universities have different legal obligations. What's allowed on a public college campus may not be permitted in a public high school.

That's logical. Public school is mandatory and college is a choice.

The free speech zone at my univ is for .... anyone who wants to utilize. I've heard one preacher and the rest are typically political or environmental issues.

I don't recall my university havin a designated zone, but they did allow the Gideon's to stand on EVERY corner of campus with bibles to hand out. I didn't typically mind, as they were very respectful, but I get uncomfortable when people I don't know try to talk to me.so I have mixed feelings about them, but in general I don't mind the Giddeons.

The University did allow the Muslim student organization to hand out Koreans at he student fair though, so they weren't just favoring Christianity.

People can, and do, preach and whatnot wherever they want on our campus which us fine. The university is public and our resources, such as the library, are open to the public and people who live near by are often on campus. Preachers can preach anywhere on campus they choose.

We get a few of the classic preachers and the Gideons. Gotta say the Gideons are a favorite but I sat that only because I've seen many a joint get rolled from a Gideon bible page.

At my high school, people used to stand just off the school property to protest aborton and hand out tracts. The case was that as long as they never crossed that line it was legal. Of course, being outside the school they also couldn't interrupt class. That's the closest similarity to the WBC in a school context I can think of but I think explains the public property situation.

Re the bolded:

Do they preach in buildings and classrooms and during class? What about dorms? Inside the library? Are there no restrictions, anyone can wander on campus and start making a speech over any topic?

Were they handing out North or South Koreans? Considering the height difference between the two, maybe the North Koreans are "travel" sized.

I'm going to hell for this, sorry. :?

   ;)

My university allowed random yelling guys, and that one was a public university. So I was just wondering what the general rules are for that.

I'm trying to figure out what I'd do with a Korean someone randomly handed me. How old were the Koreans? Babies? Adults? About to kick the bucket?

:wink-kitty:

I can't speak for any university except my alma mater.

There is a designated free speech area. It's right in the middle near the student center. I don't know all the rules about it, I'm sure there must be some. I work here now, occasionally there's something going on but not even on a weekly basis.

Students wouldn't be permitted to disrupt class or activities.

We may have have the same alma mater (and workplace, former in my case). ;) If so, the free speech zone rules were unpopular when they were instituted and there was a lot of pushback from students and staff. The university claimed that they were really there to minimize disturbance and crowds, and claimed that they somehow expanded areas where people could express themselves.

Large groups have to use them, but individuals are actually allowed to do their thing wherever they want so long as it's not disruptive.

They revised the rule to cover the area where a certain jackass campus fixture has preached every day for about 40 years now. He mellowed out while I was there and doesn't seem to be pointing at women not dressed to his standards and calling them sluts anymore, so I guess he decided to start toeing the line about not causing disturbance. It was widely believed that the underlying motivation was him and another, crazier preacher who dropped by campus to have the religious equivalent of rap battles with him.

I don't know what the current state of affairs is; the policy looks the same but I don't know how it's enforced.

I would like to apologize for iPhone's stupidity in deciding that "Karan" should be spelled "Korean."

But I'm not too sorry because your responses have been hilarious.

Crap, this wasn't clear - any open space, outside, they can do whatever they like as opposed to having a designated free speech zone. I meant it to contrast the posters example where the college has such a zone, as we do not.

People are also allowed to use library facilities. There is a man who watches porn in our library and we can't legally ask him to stop or leave. He says it's research. He doesn't touch himself though so it could be for all I know. The Joy of Sex wawasn't written without watching any uglies bump.

I don't know if anybody tried to interrput a class. I imagine, as they are strangers, that it would be counterproductive to their goal of as many soul winnings as possible but I also doubt it's legal. Classrooms also count as reserved rooms to be used for sscheduled purpose.

But they can come inside buildings to preach and hand things out, few do though (less student traffic).

I think that joke earned you a place in the Bitch Corner with me and my BFF Viola Sebastian. It's a good thing.

I tried to get a photo of a hot Korean man, so I could add my own witty reply to this thread. But google images apparently likes them ridiculously young........ :embarrassed: so I felt like a creepy pedophile and had to close the page. I'm sure they were all actually legal aged, and make very, very nice eye candy...but still.

So, is this a common thing? To have people preaching at and around campuses? It seems......odd, to me.

Daniel Dae Kim? Sorry, don't know how to insert pictures. He is the guy who played Jin-Soo on "Lost".

It's not uncommon but it isn't like it happens every week either, I guess.

There have been two "women are sluts blah blah" dudes and a dude that had an amp and was yelling about evolution. A few times, this guy with a giant cross on wheels shows up and hands out CDs about salvation. The Gideons are like clockwork, once a year. About a week ago, these clearly fundie (long hair, jean skirts, frumpy blouses) women were trying to hand out pamphlets called "the healthcare games" about the Affordable Care Act and how we were going to hell.

There are also Mormons every Saturday in the little street near campus where the bookstore is and sometimes a fire and brimstone guy is also there.

We don't get too many people making speeches on campus. The ones I've noticed over the last few years are far more likely to be environmental/political speeches rather than preachers. It's just not a big thing on campus, maybe moreso at one time but not now.

It's the cheekbones that get me. I'm a sucker for those every time.
