Can someone explain wth was up with running down the aisle after the wedding ceremony? I've never seen this. Oh and I want to add that Bin and Josh stopping the procession to be the one's to walk out with their girls...and joshs gross kiss...totally stupid!

I did not get the running out at all. Maybe it was supposed to be because they were so excited. Josh and Ben just had to get a little bit of the limelight for themselves.

I still don't understand why Jill was barefoot during the entire ceremony and reception. Even when they were out walking around on pavement and the grounds of the church. She could have found a pair of white flats for less than $10.....

I think Jill, had she been allowed to be who she really is instead of being forced into the mold her parents want all their daughters to be, would probably be a little bohemian, a little hippie flower child. That's the vibe I get. She probably would've loved getting married barefoot in a meadow of wildflowers with flowers in her hair and bare feet. Maybe having bare feet at her wedding was her little bit of trying to inject her true self into the event. Might not even have been a conscious thing. That's my take anyways.

I read today on Starcasm that Derick's Mom revealed that Jill and Derick chose to have a Convenant Marriage.

"It was so special,†Cathy said. “But it wouldn’t matter if they chose that type of marriage certificate or not, those two would still have a covenant marriage.â€

So, what exactly does that mean? Covenant marriages hold couples to a higher level of commitment by requiring they receive counseling before the wedding and that the spouses seek additional counseling before a divorce is granted. There are also limitations on what grounds for divorce are considered valid: A married couple may divorce if one spouse commits adultery, a serious crime or is abusive. On top of it all, the couple must live separately without reconciling for two years. (That is extended to 30 months if minor children are involved, but may be decreased to 12 months if the grounds for divorce are abuse.) Covenant marriages are only offered in Arkansas, Arizona and Louisiana"

I didn't know they did that. Anyone surprised? Do you think Ben and Jessa will as well?

I've no explanation for it. IMO it was rather rude, the couple are walking through their family and friends, being seen for the first time as a married couple. The running out was just awkward.

Jill with no shoes at all just really makes me think what is wrong with that girl. She doesn't seem to have a whole lot of class. She's just screaming "barefoot and pregnant" with her behavior at the wedding. Just something about her puts me off.

Why is she so clingy? I can't imagine what in her upbringing would make her feel so insecure about Derick not showing up.

Sorry but the First Look thing was just dumb. It was so awkward.

It felt like Jill was trying too hard, but I'm puzzled as to why she felt this way. Her insistence on the untradition, seeing each other and spending the day together... what about your last few hours with your family? That's what it is supposed to be for.

It makes her subsequent behavior of lunches with Derick and picking Derick up from work now seem uber-clingy, rather just newlywedish.

Jill doesn't know her own skin, how to be anything than a J-slave, and literally clings to Derick to define her?

How about take your hand off his thigh Jill and act like you have some manners.

I Googled Covenant Marriage last night after Jill mentioned it at the wedding. You know JB is just pleased as pie that his little girls will all have an extra-speshul designation from the State as to how much more wonderful their marriages are. More than Josh and Anna's and any of the Bates'.

I am thinking maybe the Duggars & Roloffs should combine forces- Little People Fundie Wedding Farm..... Since Arkansas is one of the few states to have Covenant Marriage- they could be the most exclusive fundie marriage venue in the country. How long do you think it would take Amy Roloff to put JimBob in his place and have him on his knees in the prayer closet and asking God to make the Devil Lady go away?

Jill came off like a stage 5 clinger in this episode. She probably stares at her clock daily just waiting for Derick to get off work.

I took it as they have a legal marriage and a covenant marriage. Meaning they're married but the most important thing is they made a covenant to God, so they won't ever be divorcing.

Posted

Wait, I guess it's a legal marriage that is different from regular marriage and is available in AR. I'll have to google.

Dude I would never sign up for this

nwamarriages.com/married-couples/covenant-marriage-license/

Under a Covenant Marriage, a couple may seek divorce only after receiving counseling and only for the following reasons:

Adultery by the other spouse

Commission of a felony or other infamous crime by the other spouse

Physical or sexual abuse of the spouse or of a child of either spouse

Additionally, Covenant Marriage couples may divorce following a period of separation:

The spouses have been living separate and apart continuously without reconciliation for two years.

If there are minor children involved, the couple must have been living separate and apart for two years and six months from the date the judgment for judicial separation was signed. If abuse of a child was the basis for judicial separation, the couple must live separate and apart for only one year from the date the judgment was signed.

Note it's adultery by a different spouse so you can't commit your own adultery and get out of it. Very limited grounds for divorce!

What i'm wondering is, would a Covenant Marriage agreement hold up in a non-covenant marriage state? Could they get around the rules by divorcing in another state?

Posted

Yup- very scary how the state has limited the grounds for divorce and extended the timeline. A lot of fundies sign "accountability" contracts with churches or other organizations they join agreeing to this kind of stuff, but for the State to actually give legal teeth to it? That is just nutty!

the super clingly part was annoying but it was Jill - she hasn't stopped since she met him and now more than ever - and I think she would preferred to be out in a meadow - she seems to like them.

as for the first look thing - it was the first look in the wedding dress- but it seemed like she mainly just wanted to be around him all day

I was just going to ask this exact question.

Thankfully, my lawyer, and by that I mean Wikipedia, says they can divorce in another state:

It is more difficult for couples who have a legal covenant marriage to obtain a divorce. Cause for divorce is typically limited to domestic violence, a felony with jail time, or adultery; however, these restrictions do not apply if one or both spouses file for divorce in a state that does not recognize covenant marriages

Yes!!!That's the impression I always had of her, and plus, didn't early on she say something about getting married outside? Maybe she had this flower child vision of her wedding and at least stuck with the bare feet :D

Oh so it actually puts severe limitations on even being able to get legally divorced, like in the old days! :o I forgot that a lot of fundies have a problem with how easy it us to get a divorce - forcing their square ideal vision into the round reality hole.

I am surprised that the church allowed bare feet. I suppose because the floor runner was involved?

My own daughter was barefooted at her beach wedding.

I think for a formal church venue, shoes should be worn.

It's weird, all the talk of modesty for knees, shoulders and collar bones, yet dirty feet are fine and dandy for a formal church wedding.

Lack of respect for a house of worship-especially when you are a mere guest and not even a member.

I think the Duggars hypocritical approach and lack of common freaking sense is what bothers me the most.

I seem to be the odd one out, but I thought it was a cute way to go about the recessional. These people can't dance, but they wanted something fun to do down the aisle. I don't see the big deal.

Then again, I'm no member of the FJ etiquette police.

I thought the running was kinda cute too. Ben and Josh didn't need to claim their women during it... but other than that, it was kinda cute. Like they were excited to get started with their life together.

Posted

I thought when I saw them run into that room it was because they couldn't wait until the honeymoon and had to have a quickie. Running out of the chapel to me was a sign that they were enjoying their new freedom at the time. I'm not so sure about Ben, but Smuggar wanted to make some part of his sister's wedding about himself, which is why he grabbed his wife and gave her that kiss. He's probably going to do that again at his other sister's wedding as he's that much of an attention whore.

but every marriage is a covenant in God's eyes, what are they scared of

I think it was disrespectful to have hats on in the church. I don't care that they are little boys - hats off in church, guys!

The covenant wedding agreement seems like just one more way that JB controls his kids. I can see the covenant license becoming mandatory for a Duggar kid to be allowed to get married. Anything they can do to keep those kids from living independent, non-fundie lives...
