i'd heard about this and like you said it's not surprising but it is horrible and makes me feel bad for Michelle's sister and any other LGBT people that have contact with the Duggars.

Im a lesbian......but I am really not surprised they are glad they aren't gay. Growing up in a family like that, being gay would be another thing stacked against them to make their life miserable. Even with the stupid courtship rules, being straight at least means theres a chance of Daddy finding a compatible stranger, if youre gay, not so much. Its either a miserable marriage and sex with a man whether you want to or not, or having your family hate you.

If I give them the benefit of the doubt, they might not have been thinking of homosexuality at all when they said that, and what they meant was "Sexual desires are normal and not something to be ashamed of, and we even thank G-d that we have them." As opposed to other fundies who think that sexual desire is based in sin.

I took the comment as reassuring girls that feeling an attraction toward a guy and having sexual desires are normal and not sinful. There is so much NO in their world, and so much emphasis on purity, accountability, and avoidance of sin and lust, that I thought they were just attempting to tell readers that the Duggar girls are like anyone else. Having an interest in sex is not bad, it's normal. It just needs to be handled in the right way-their way-but it isn't bad to have the feelings. Simply channel them into a 3 month courtship/engagement/wedding and you're all set!

I do it too, but I'm not really sure why. I know that you're not allowed to deface the Hebrew name of G-d, but I'm not sure why that transfers over to the English word which sounds completely different. The way "G-d" is pronounced sounds exactly like the Hebrew name "Gad" which is just one of the 12 tribes and that name is fine to deface. So why do we do it?

I'm interested in this. I have a basic understanding of the dash, but I'm wondering about capitalization. I've seen some use all lowercase, and some capitalize the way that a Christian would capitalize any word pertaining to the supreme being. Is capitalization/lower case part of different schools of thought on this, or is it basically up to the individual? TIA!

Well, I think it was kind of a dig against lesbians. But, I think they don't really know better. All their life, they've been thaught that being gay is something horrible and sinful. And yes, they can be indeed very glad if they are straight, cause in a family like that I don't wish for anyone to be born gay.

I think that if one or several of the Duggar children are gay they basically would not know it for themselves just because they are not represented with the possiblity. They have no reference at all and were not raised to have insight to their deepest needs and emotions.

I'm a lesbian and I know that if had grown up in the 50s without internet and without any representation of gays in the media I would not have known that I'm gay even if I had fallen in love with a woman I wouldnt have known that it is love.

I imagine that the Duggar children are not tuned in to their emotions because it's not usefull to their family structure. So even if they fell in love someone of the gender they would not know.

Does that make sense?
