When I saw this headline, I thought it meant he'd been signed off due to some sort of admin error, but the guy in this story really is having all the same symptoms as his pregnant fiancee - sickness, back pains, cravings. I'd heard that this was a true condition - though quite rare - but this is the first documented case I have read about. FJ ladies, did any of your men have this problem when you were gestating?

oh i remember reading about this in school. the ways the brain can trick the body into symptoms is quite incredible. psychosomatic illnesses abound quite a bit, actually, just usually not like the male pseudo-pregnancy.

It's interesting! Of course, various comments on the Internet about this think this guy's just taking the piss. I suppose it's easy to look at it that way when most women who are pregnant don't get signed off work - unless there are serious complications making her really ill - but if you're a generally healthy guy who's not used to feeling sick in general, it might really knock him out! I'm like that when I get what, for most people, would be just a pathetic little sniffle, but colds definitely do make me feel like shit for two or three days. I can't imagine feeling suddenly ill EVERY MORNING, having back pains and swollen nipples when you're not used to that. Still, at least he won't have to go through labour! Unless the labour pain is transferred as well, I'm not sure how that works.

She said: “I do get a bit tired of having to look after Harry when he should be looking after me. It proves women are tougher than blokes when it comes to pregnancy.â€
Good grief! He's NOT pregnant just feeling crappy at the most, you actually ARE pregnant - quit babying him (pardon the pun :D ) and let him look after you.

I saw that as well. That's why I think it's bullshit in general when men refer to women as the weaker sex. We have to give birth and - at the risk of being crude - we can bleed for a week and not die.

I call bull. It's extremely rare to have a psychosomatic pregnancy. Queen Mary, the one called Bloody Mary, had one.

For us women, morning sickness and everything doesn't get us out of work unless there are verifiable medical problems being caused. Just not feeling good, or being achy, doesn't cut it, and no, that guy doesn't know what Kate's going through. She's got the world watching, and if she loses a baby, there'll be a lot of harsh judgement on her. She's considered to be the one responsible for continuing the monarchy now.

I bet the girlfriend is pissed. Who wants to bet she's not getting to take time off, even though she's actually preggo, and that she's furious he's making it all about him?

This reminds me of James Herriot. In one of his books he mentions how he carried his wife's baby! It's interesting.

My ex-husband made labor and delivery of our kids about him. He was tired and cranky. Too stressed to help out.

I can guarantee that I was more tired and more sore than he was. I had just labored for days, pushed out a watermelon out of my v, had stitches from top to bottom, and my milk didn't come in for 3-4 days after I had my daughter. (It didn't come in at all for our son.)

He expected me to clean house, take care of the baby, do laundry and take care of him as soon as I got home from the hospital. I had 8 weeks of maternity leave to get myself feeling back to normal, but I had to take care of that a-hole.

Sam, I'm glad that selfish wanker is now your ex!

Yeah if my husband had a sympathetic pregnancy I think I would loose my mind. I love my husband but he's a big baby when it comes to things like being sick. When he had a stomach virus once he begged for death and a cold results in him being in bed all day because his nose is stuffy.

I don't think I would have enough patience while feeling miserable in the first trimester for him also claiming to be miserable. Luckily my husband's sympathetic symptoms seem to stop at always gaining some extra weight while I'm pregnant but that's easily explainable since we don't exercise together as frequently when I'm pregnant.
