Joan Rivers- UPDATE- Has Died

I just saw the news where Joan Rivers was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hosp in NYC after having surgery in her doctors office on her throat. I guess she stopped breathing. I hate any kind of procedure done in doctors offices. They don't have the medical instruments that a hospital would have to keep a patient alive. Then we all know Brad and Angelina are finally married if you haven't heard the news by now.

I didn't realize Brad and Angelina weren't married.

I never really cared much about Joan Rivers or her fashion or whatever she did to her face. However, I hope she'll be alright. How frightening, to have a routine procedure put you in critical condition. Scary.

Story I saw said the procedure was done in a clinic. Lots of minor surgical procedures are done in outpatient surgical centers now rather than in hospitals, so it may have been a setting like that.

My parents loved Joan Rivers when I was growing up, so she represents a very Jewish, borscht-belt type of humor from another time.

I give her credit for making herself relevant in a far different era, although I found her bitchiness very sexist and not so funny any more.

I hope the procedure wasn't a cosmetic surgery type of thing. It probably was, and is tragic.

ITA. I hope she pulls through. I remember my Granny was disappointed when Joan Rivers wasn't offered The Tonight Show after Carson retired.

Sorry, but I can't stand Joan Rivers, and it has nothing to do with her face. I know people with her exact personality in real life, and they are nothing but mean. They may be "funny" for awhile, but then you realize they're saying all of the horrible judgmental things about you as they are saying about everyone else. And HEAVEN FORBID that you try to call them out on it. They go into total offensive mode and show their true colors (to your face, for once). I can't stand GROWN ADULTS that have nothing better to do than to make fun of and bully other people. Absolutely horrible.

What 16strong said. I find Joan Rivers unfunny and offensive. I hope she doesn't suffer or linger, but dead or alive makes no difference to me. May her family remember her with joy.

I know she wasn't to everyone's taste, but I liked Joan, particularly her earlier years. She really was a pioneer and she'd been through some really tough stuff. Joan was a survivor.

Vogue published a tribute on their website today. Be sure to watch her appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and see if you don't like her a bit more now.

Very sad that she died. what did she have done? I still don't like her.

she was a pioneer for female comedians. before her, it was much harder - if not impossible - for a female to break into that industry. (and before anyone mentions lucille ball...i don't believe lucy ever did stand-up, which was what joan really got into) if not for her, we may not have the female stand-ups that we have today. someone has to break the glass ceiling, and in that regard, it was joan.

She kind of had two careers--a glass ceiling breaking career in comedy that is nothing to sneer at and that she should be remembered for. But, unfortunately, her second career of sneering at red carpet clothing on a bad cable channel, having endless plastic surgery and hawking crap on QVC has overshadowed the first part for many people who don't remember the second one at all or very vividly.

yeah, i don't like that she's known more for that than her brilliant comedy. i'm not sure why she felt the need to go in that direction, unless she was afraid of getting stale or something like that.

I think that is what is causing the snark and such around the web on her death. Younger people only know her in the second career and it all makes it easy to see her as someone kind of ridiculous. She last did The Tonight Show in 1986--today's 20 somethings were mostly not born and most people in their 30s weren't allowed to stay up that late in 1986.

And I assume she indulged in the ridiculous in her later years for the sake of keeping some spotlight and making money.

highly possible. afraid to lose what she had, she did what she thought was necessary to keep the money coming in. not that it excuses her ridiculous behaviour. it actually just makes me sad that she felt that comedy alone wouldn't sustain her. she was very smart and hilarious to boot.

all i've seen so far is "throat procedure", which could be a myriad of different things.

The clinic is under investigation. It was identified as Yorkville Endoscopy. They may have been telling the truth about a throat procedure as I doubt plastic surgery is often done at an endoscopy clinic.

ETA: Responsible sources say that the investigation is just normal procedure after such an incident at an outpatient facility and they aren't accused of doing anything wrong. Link: http://www.wjla.com/articles/2014/09/jo ... 06776.html

oh yeah, endoscopies and other -scopy procedures are easily done in office. but you're correct, they are not for cosmetic reasons, they are diagnostic.

I'm a younger generation, so my only impression of her was her ''fashion police'', which I thought was bitchy and stupid. But since she has passed, the media showed a lot of footage of her with Johnny Carson and she was actually very funny! I think it's a shame people are slamming her for what she did in her later years.

Also, I heard she was getting an operation for her throat, because her voice was getting very raspy and it annoyed her. It wasn't related to plastic surgery.

There were a handful of times when I thought Joan Rivers really went too far. I thought her joke regarding the three kidnapped girls in Cleveland was truly disgusting. And her joke calling President Obama gay and Mrs. Obama a tranny was straight up Ann Coulter bullshit. Ms. Rivers was better than that. I saw some of her episodes on the "Celebrity Apprentice" where she came across as an evil shrew, but I'm smart enough to know "Game of Thrones" is more realistic than most reality shows.

That being said, I did find Ms. Rivers to be very, very funny at times. Yes, she could be bitingly crass and cruel, but some of her subjects needed to be taken down a bit (Ms. Rivers would have a field day with Gwyneth Paltrow converting to Judaism). Furthermore, a lot of her subjects could totally take a joke and laughed with her. Plus, Ms. Rivers could also point the snark at herself and rip herself with the precision of a Benihana chef. Her self-deprecating and biting wit regarding everything from her plastic surgery to her sex life could make me cry tears of laughter.

Ms. Rivers had a tireless work ethic. Even in her 80s she never stopped busting her ass, hustling and just getting herself out there in the public. She blazed a trail for women comics in a business that is still brutally sexist. And she really mentored emerging comedic talent. I've also read a lot about her charitable efforts.

Was Ms. Rivers perfect? Hardly. But I got to give the broad her due.
