Duggars and coffee

I can't remember if I actually asked this question or if I just thought I asked this question. So please forgive me if this has been asked.

Am I crazy for thinking there was a time when the Duggars were against coffee because it was a drug? Am I making this up in my head? Confusing them with Mormons? I could've sworn in the early days coffee was a no-no.

I don't remember seeing them as being against coffee in any of the early episodes, but I've seen more of the newer epis than the old ones, so I could be wrong. I know that in more recent episodes, Jinger had gone on the record as saying she can't live without her caffeine fix. The older daughters also worked in a coffee shop to raise money for charity, and the Duggar family also has a Keurig.

Many devout Mormons are against drinking coffee because it's a stimulant/drug.

Me, I'm just glad to have it because I had to be up at 5 AM this morning.

I think at this point, coffee is the only thing stopping Jinger from killing her parents. She lives on the stuff, and I think it makes her life at least bearable. I hope she never discovers anything stronger.

I live in Southern Utah & the hot vs cold drink Mormon rules confuse me. Hot drinks like coffee & tea are big no no but mountain dew and energy drinks are fine. Yesterday they opened the new vending machine at my daughter's 6th grade school which is over 99% LDS (and almost all very active members)& the engery drink machine line was so long. I find it odd that some states make you be 18 to buy energy drinks but here 11 years old can buy them & drink them in school.

As for the Duggars the coffee difference for me is they are no longer cheap. Would the Michelle Duggar we met in 14 kids buy a $5 coffee, no! I don't think 14 kids Michelle would have bought a kerig. I'm bet back then during fellowship maybe a regular cheap pot of black coffee was made. I wonder if the crew having coffee influenced the kids. It seems like the Duggar kids drink coffee now even earlier then most kids & more coffee since most teens are in school & can't have 4-5 coffees all day like Jinger said she did.

Are there really states where you have to be 18 to buy energy drinks? I've never heard that before... I don't think they're good for anybody, much less growing kids, but I don't know how a state could justify putting an age requirement on something because of its caffeine content.

I was talking to a friend in Ohio(not sure if it a county or state law) and said her 17 year old could not buy a energy drink at a gas station. She went into the store and they refused her knowing that she was going to give it to him. I believe the closest big city to her is Columbus , maybe Dayton. I was shocked since energy drinks again are so accessible in Utah and smoking is 19 & they are fighting hard to get it changed to 21 this year. I believe it is mostly a county law, usually after energy drinks are blamed on a death.

How strange! And I've been hearing for years that Mountain Dew and energy drinks are supposed to be much worse for kids, healthwise, and I'm pretty sure the energy drinks have more caffeine than the coffee does. Also did not know kids had to be 18 in some states to buy them. I wonder how they justify that?

And agreed, Michelle can definitely afford the more expensive coffees now. A 14 Kids and Counting Michelle couldn't have justified the expense of Starbucks, but the newer, weathier Michelle can afford it easily. I think I remember seeing the (younger!) kids help themselves to coffee in the green room before appearing on the Today Show in one episode. Maybe the kids got into the habit of doing that to try and wake up before showtime.

There is no law in Ohio that age restricts the sale of energy drinks. (Other than Four Loko, but that has alcohol in it, so one must be 21+ to purchase) Neither is there a county or city law in Franklin county (Columbus) or Montgomery county (Dayton). Now, of course, individual establishments can pose their own restrictions, which sounds like it was the case for your friend. Ohio is pretty business-friendly in this regard.

I live in central Ohio and my then-17 year old fiance had no issue buying Red Bulls and Monsters.

There is no law about energy drinks where I live, but I complained to the shop when my 11 year old bought two bottles of it. I don't think its right for kids to drink it.

I hope this doesn't sound rude, as I am just curious, but if you don't think kids should drink energy drinks, how is it that your eleven year old bought some?

I heard the Mormon church owns stock in Pepsi, so that's why it's okay for Mormons to drink their products.

It must be a county law. I am very close to one of the places you listed and that is not something I've encountered here.

Speaking only for myself - I don't want to imagine a world without coffee!!!

And I'm Canadian so to me "coffee" means "Timmies" and only Timmies. I go to Starbucks during Pumpkin Spice Latte season and that's it. I will go to my grave swearing that, despite what Tim Horton corporation says, they do so add "something", not illegal but something, to their coffee that makes it different from everywhere else.

Yay another Canadian who loves timmies! Lol I agree, I swear they add something, and I don't even drink coffee! Even the hot chocolate tastes different (and way better!) than Starbucks, same with ice capps /ice Latte things. Maybe because the coffee has to be fresh every 20 minutes so it's not sitting there all day like everyone else's coffee? Or maybe just because it's actually Canadian (or is it since BK is taking over?) and at a decent price. my little brother works at timmies actually and according to him it's just a special roast they do or something and there's nothing strange in the ingredients list, but who knows.

Now I want to know what they add and it's going to bother me for ages lol!

Back on topic, but if Jinger is drinking 4-5 cups of coffee, is she replacing meals with that stuff? Could be another reason why those girls are so damn skinny?

We see coffee featured so much in their lives that I couldn't see them going without it. The Michelle of 10years ago would never be sitting with her daughter talking about a boyfriend over lattes.

Can't speak for Browneyed Girl, but at least where I live the initial reaction was "what the fuck?!" then it was like "we'll I better not see a burger patty between my honey dip donuts " or "they better be keeping the timbits!" BK says they won't change anything, but you never know.

as far as I've seen, most people are mad because timmies won't be Canadian anymore. They're mad because they see it as timmies selling out/"why can't we have one thing Canadian, why does everything have to be Americanized?", and some are saying they won't be going to timmies anymore if it's not Canadian/buying local/in the community. Timmies does a lot for the community, like timbits hockey and camps for kids etc so people are worried that will stop.

My little brother works for timmies and is worried about his job, if BK is going to bring American workers here or more temporary foreign workers (there was an issue in Victoria about this & I believe McDonald's?). I don't see him having an issue with his job security, but let him worry about whatever he wants, maybe worries will equal busting more ass will equal a raise lol

According to Snopes, that's just an urban legend. There are some extremist Mormons who won't drink sodas or even take OTC headache medication if it has caffeine in it, but many Mormons do drink soda by the caseload, and who are into the energy drinks. My Mormon ex-husband and his mom would go through a case of Pepsi in a day, as they drank that as if it was going to be banned by the church any day. I learned the hard way that even though iced tea is cold, it's still banned as my ex had a major fit when I drank some in front of him. Now, of course, I love a glass of unsweetened iced tea on a hot day, as not only is it refreshing, it's far healthier than sodas.

That's pretty much my reaction but remember Wendy's did own Timmies for a while. Scuttlebutt I read was (can't remember if was in a Yahoo news article or in my local paper) that Tims understands the Cdn. market is pretty much saturated. There are actually more Tims per capita in Canada than Mc'Ds per capita in the U.S. Tim Hortons wants into the U.S. markets in the worst way. The Wendy's thing didn't work out they way they wanted (it as a huge disaster $$ wise) I think this is "round two lets try again".

I hope Burger King doesn't mess it up. Word is head office is staying in Canada.

I guess it might be the caffeine+sugar+artificial flavours. I know that when I was 9-10 years old, I was allowed a cup of really milky coffee with one sugar to dunk my toast on a sunday morning, but my mother would have had a fit if I had asked for a red bull because of all the additives. At least with a coffee/tea you can control what goes in it (unless you get artificially flavoured syrups and stuff).

And I'm Canadian so to me "coffee" means "Timmies" and only Timmies.

I'm Canadian too! I generally drink tea, but when I do have a cup of coffee, it's gotta be Timmie's (unless it's some sort of fancy espresso thing that my student-y ass can't afford, in which case it's not really coffee). That's the other terrific thing about Timmie's, it's so inexpensive that even I can drink it regularly!

Burger King can now move their corporate headquarters to Canada as a legal move to evade American taxes.

Wouldn't they pay more in tax if they were here? Or is there some loophole where they wouldn't pay U.S. or Canadian taxes?

And now this whole thread has me craving a Timmies and a Boston Cream Donut. Or an Oreo Ice-Cap. I know there are some Timmies in the U.S. I wonder if there are any in J'Chelle & Boob's neck of the woods.

The kids gave their mom a nice coffee maker on the Today show for Mother's Day many moons ago, saying it's how she gets through her day and they wanted to give her a nice one. She was very appreciative. So coffee is a big Duggar YES. :)

He bought them with his own money from the shop across the street from our house.

The Mormon objection to coffee comes directly from the Word of Wisdom, otherwise known as doctrines and covenants 89.

The exact wording:

The use of wine, strong drinks, tobacco, and hot drinks is proscribed

...

That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

...

And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.

https://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testa ... 9?lang=eng

No mention of caffeine, but that does not mean the church hasn't considered it in the context of the Word of Wisdom. It's discouraged, but not forbidden:

With reference to cola drinks, the Church has never officially taken a position on this matter, but the leaders of the Church have advised, and we do now specifically advise, against the use of any drink containing harmful habit-forming drugs under circumstances that would result in acquiring the habit. Any beverage that contains ingredients harmful to the body should be avoided.

https://www.lds.org/liahona/1990/03/caf ... n?lang=eng

Of course, the Duggars aren't following that as they would likely consider Mormons heretics, but they may have come to their own conclusions.

Not even Mormons consider it an idol, though. That's just the Maxwells. [emoji6]

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
