Agreed, and Josh sure doesn't know why the audience laughed a few other times during his speech. He speaks about freedom; so, my questions to him are: Why can't everyone be "free" to speak and live as they choose (as long as they are not abusive to anyone) , after all, God did say to love one another? Have you ever heard about the "separation of church and state"? Why aren't you courageous enough to attend a main stream college, listen to any type of music or watch television without succumbing to evil temptations? Why are abortion, birth control and gay marriage the only issues of priority to you and your fundamentalist Christians are so passionate? What about the homeless, the hungry, war in the Middle East, etc; y'know Smug-helping the least of our brothers??? How about addressing those issues? Smug, when was the last time you volunteered in your country to help those in need?

Point on----the writers must be totally certain Josh fully understands his material AND writers need to fully understand Josh is an under educated young person without any personal political experience to ensure the effectiveness of his speech.

I feel really sad for Josh. I think he is doing exactly what he's been raised to do, but it is so sad to see it played out. I know he's a grown man and is responsible for what comes out of his mouth, but I think he's still living to earn the shiny gold star of parents (and God's!) approval.

I think he was never given any critical thinking skills and is woefully undereducated. The party line was grilled into him, and whether he believes it or not, that's what he's going to say.

I keep holding out hope that with enough exposure to other people and different ideas he might finally see the that he actually has a choice whether to believe what he says or not.

I think of when I was super-zealous and driven Christian at around age 18. Of course I didn't have a public platform, but I still was doing what I was told - trying to convert people, telling them how to live, standing up for Christianity, etc. And I feel like he's really stuck in that horrible place. It's not too late. Free yourself, Josh!

When FRC finally dumps him, calls it "just life," and he can't get a job anywhere else in DC, I think his perspective might finally change. But his position was supposedly as a grassroots face to get the young Tea Partiers more politically active. I think it's possible that it could occur sooner. I look at Josh as being like a celebrity that's hired for a fashion or makeup campaign. They are hired to be a new and interesting face for the product being sold and to garner publicity. But they always get dumped after a campaign or two because people get used to looking at them and they no longer attract attention for the company. It's the natural course/lifespan of such things. It's not a matter of if they will cut their losses, but when.

To be fair to Joshie, there is a kind of courage in announcing to the world "I'm stupid and I'm bigoted and I don't care about you!"

But yeah, I totally agree with neuroticcat, it's so sad to see Josh do as he's told because it's what he's been told. I hope some of the Duggar kids pick up some critical thinking skills somewhere. If the FRC kicks Josh to the curb, I could see it going two ways. One, he desperately tries to grab another DC job and must come to the realization that he's really embarrassing himself (which would be a disaster in terms of his psyche). In this scenario, he eventually returns to Arkansas, a broken and humiliated man. OR, he successfully gets another DC job and does whatever it takes to hang on in DC, never realizing that he's becoming more and more disingenuous and alienated from his "values", while his family suffers as he loses all sense of morality.
