I doubt it. A.) Ben probably feels called to be even more of a zealot to impress his in-laws B.) There is no such thing as 'damage' or 'offensive' to them unless it is offensive to fundies themselves.

Doubt it. He just posted a photo of Jessa on his Instagram two days ago. As someone else said, as long as he doesn't say anything to offend their fundie circle I think he's okay.

Some of Ben's comments about Catholics have been reported by Radar Online and, just an hour ago, by the Daily Mail, as well as several other online outlets. It is just a matter of time before mainstream news media picks them up. I firmly believe that Ben will be forced to correct what he wrote, and hopefully post an apology to those he offended.

I posted this information on the thread about Ben and Jessa's courtship (part 3), but I am also posting it here since it relates directly to Ben's use of social media. Can someone please tell me if I should discuss this issue here, or there? Thank you.

Radar reported yesterday that Ben has been "slammed" on Facebook for saying that those who believe Catholic teaching are "in deadly error." Unfortunately, though, the three examples he gave of Catholic teaching are NOT Catholic beliefs. When confronted with this, he deleted this post.

But, also, Radar's story is incomplete. This was actually Ben's third post about Catholics. Last week, after returning from his mission trip, he first posted that Catholics and those who practice Voodoo are persecuting Christians in Honduras and making it very difficult for them to gather and worship together. He was immediately hit by backlash, with most commenting that Catholics are Christians. Others also rejected his intimation that Catholics are associated with those who practice Voodoo. In response to this criticism, Ben posted that the Catholics persecuting Honduran Christians are not sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church, and he said that he is sure that the Pope would not condone their actions. He continued to receive negative comments so he posted his third statement about Catholics - that reported by Radar.

Starcasm has reported Ben's first post about Catholics in their story about his mission trip with Jessa. And Wtf Fundies Families and The Duggars: Life is not all pickles and hairspray have both captured screenshots of all three of Ben's posts. No one, though that I can find, has copies of all comments written to Ben in response to these posts. All three posts were deleted last week within two days of his first post. Now there is also a Facebook page advocating a boycott of 19 Kids and Counting until Ben apologizes.

I really hope so. I'm not Catholic, I'm Orthodox... but he still criticized things similar to both of us and it really offended me

Ha ha, you said "fuckwit"---Ben really bothers me. It's hard to dislike a complete stranger and even my liberal ass tries very hard to see the good in people and consider their points of view. When my older brother denounced Catholicism and became a Baptist, he posted almost weekly on Facebook about how wrong, evil, and misguided Catholics are. During that time I kept my mouth shut although I was raging inside (mostly to keep the peace with my mother and not cause a family argument--weeee!!! I'm a grown up now!! :dance: )

Anyway...during this time my husband and I were already tired of attending mass and going through the motions so we completely abandoned religion. I read all the crap my brother posted in depth and then some and it really made me dislike nearly every aspect of organized religion. Now my super religious mom has a crazy Baptist son and an atheist daughter. Ooopsies! I'll never publicly shame someone's religious choices again--except for FJ of course...

This is kind of an example of what's wrong with TV courtship (and courtship in general). Dim Bulb seemed to think Ben was the right guy for Jessa. Now that Ben has proven himself to be potentially damaging to the family brand (whether they agree with him or not), there's no real way to get rid of him. Keep in mind, the Duggars have had social media kerfuffles before (JD and the guns, anyone?), but never to this extent and never insulting/condemning another religion and a Christian one at that.

I think we will soon be hearing less from Ben. I think Jim Bob absolutely loves the money and fame this show brings. He not only got the ex cheerleader, he also gets to be on tv. He is going to do whatever he has to to make sure no one rocks the boat. There is a difference between being famous in the fundy world and being known in the Main Street world. Jim Bob does not cross me as a man who can go back to anonymity. Ben needs to wise up before he is kicked off the compound.

Having grown up in an area with a very heavy concentration of Portuguese Catholics, I say with confidence that they would find his use of a statue of the Lady of Fatima to mock Catholics praying to Not-Jesus incredibly offensive.

My guess is that's he is trying to impress Boob. Maybe he's still in a trial period and he wants to show what a good fundie he can be. We know he has sisters who wear trousers and and T-shirts that reference dancing. While Derrick Jillard may have come from a more secular background as well, he's much more mature and has some cred from his extensive mission work.

But this isn't good publicity for a show that probably counts quite a few devout Catholics amongst it's regular viewers. Jim Bob doesn't mind that people know about his anti-choice "it's a baby Holocaust!" rants, but pissing off a large segment of the religiously inclined/ anti-choice segment of the viewership might not sit well with Boob who cares very much about keeping the show on the air.

Actually Josh has said the same things before, especially when he was trying to wrap his tiny little mind around supporting Rick Santorum while still hating on Catholics. The fact that Josh went to work for FRC was really a blow to his social media. 2011/2012 Smuggar was a goldmine of snark.

When I first read the Radar article I figured Ben must be looking for something to bond with his future BIL over.

I saw his Instagram of Jason through the peephole and at first I thought it was Jessa when I realised it wasn't I had to check who he said it was. I still think it's josiah not Jason lol. It's the first time I really thought Jessa looked like one of her siblings so strongly. I see Jinger as a female and darker version of Josh. Jana and joy have been getting more similar too.
