A Duggar Dancing Question

LogansMama

Recommended Posts

So I watched an old episode where the Duggs answer viewer questions and Jill & Jing were asked the age-old question of why don't the Duggs dance. Jill answered by saying that it stirs up desires that cannot be righteously fulfilled (strangely she never utters the word defrauding). My question is, if that's the reason, why can't married couples dance in the privacy of their homes? In that case those desires would be righteously fulfilled. Plus, it has the added bonus of proving that unless it's a bump-and-grind, it likely won't lead to lust.

I don't have an answer, but I always found it odd that they always avoided the question of why it was okay to dance in the bible. Or drink.. for that matter. :?

I never understood that either. I mean sure, there are very sexy dances, where men and women really do get very close to each other. But there is also stuff like line dancing or dances where everyone is in a circle and you only have to hold the hands of you neighbors.

I think that is, like so many rules in the Gothard ideology, some cherry-picking from the bible where he twisted some phrases the way he wanted to.

My guess is that he doesn't want anyone to have some fun, cause that could lead to "sin" or people feeling good about themselves and starting to question his rules and doctrines.

An old friend of mine who graduated from Bob Jones didn't see why married couples couldn't dance together. She also didn't see why the sexes should swim separately and liked the aroma of a freshly lit cigarette. Need I say that the last time I saw Becky she was wearing slacks?

I assume that a young Billy Gothard asked his crush to home coming or prom or whatever, she said NO, and henceforth DANCING WAS OF THE DEVIL. So no dancing for anyone.

Another poster (freejoyannatoo) posted a link to Marci Dauer's FB account in the Jurisdictions discussion and the picture below was in the album. Can some computer genius figure out how to read this better?? What is sincere dancing? Also, does anyone else find it strange that this is the page form the wisdom booklets that they xeroxed and hung on their wall? Is this really one of the most important messages from the wisdom booklets?

FYI, here is the link to all 191 Duggar pictures in this lady's FB album.

Many of the uber strict Calvinists don't either.

But then uber strict Calvinists get off on making life as dull and grey as possible. And you can't go around doing anything that the Catholics do on principle (except drink. But only in moderation.)

I don't understand the no dancing rule. Even in the bible, there is a time for everything, including dancing.

I was brought up attending a First Baptist Church in Texas, although I do not associate myself with any religion or church at this point in my life.

Dancing was never outlawed. The only type of dancing frowned upon in public was ''dirty dancing'' i.e. hip grinding or other sexually suggestive touching. A proper waltz, country line dance, or group dance was perfectly OK and encouraged.

Even normal hugging wasn't frowned upon. There wasn't a side hug to be seen and I had never even heard of that until I first saw the Duggar family show.

Not all Baptists are so strict. Even at our church summer camp we were allowed to wear shorts or pants and it was thought of as normal. There was absolutely no regulations regarding required skirts or dresses. As long as one didn't dress slutty or expose any breasts or genitals, almost anything was allowed.

This seems like a good time for an old joke:

Why don't Baptists have sex standing up? Because it might lead to dancing!

I grew up in an very old school Baptist Church where dancing was a huge no-no. Social dancing was akin to fornicating in the eyes of most people. Artistic dancing (ie- ballet, jazz, etc.) was frowned upon but not outwardly forbidden. Parents even tried to keep their little ones from dancing along to kid songs. One of my aunts pre-screened Kidz Songs CD's to make sure the D word was not in them and called it "wiggle time" instead of dancing when her toddlers would take to the beat.

The first part of the second paragraph says, "if the motives of the dancer are not to stir up sensuality, but to express joy for victory(?) or delight in the presence of the Lord, the dance could be classified as sincere. Even with such a classification however the dancer cannot.."

and that's all I can read, but I'm assuming it's some warning against unintentionally defrauding someone or constantly re-evaluting your motives so you don't upset god.

Plus, in many religions, dance itself is a way to express devotion to God (or gods). Sufi Muslims dance to express devotion, even the strictest of Hasidic Jews will dance in celebration at weddings or Bar Mitzvahs, many indigenous religions in Africa and the Americas use dance as part of worship, and there are plenty of modes of worship that involve moving your body (the ritual way in which Muslims pray, yoga, even some ways Jews pray), that maybe could be considered dancing.

If you don't want to twerk or do salsa dancing, that's perfectly fine, but not all dancing or just body movement is bad or sinful; it's simply a way to express yourself.

Though of course, in Gothard-land, expressing yourself is the path to the devil...

My opinion is that whoever thought up the no dancing rule was just someone with no coordination or sense of rhythm who was jealous of all the fun the ppl who could dance were having.

And I'm pretty sure Calvin was just a wowser in general, sort of like Steve Maxwell but with a better classical education.

As for the argue that all religions dance, it doesn't hold water in fundamentalism. All -other-religions dance. But all other religions are false religions and the fact that they dance, or allow percussion, or whatever just goes to prove their wrongness.

Ted Shawn was one of the pioneers of American modern dance. Ted had originally intended to become a Methodist minister, but he began to take dance lessons to re-build his strength after a bout of diphtheria. Ted found that dance could be the highest form of worship. Ted is quoted as saying "I believe that dance communicates man’s deepest, highest and most truly spiritual thoughts and emotions far better than words, spoken or written."

Sounds like Gothard doesn't like to dance so he found a way to get out of it.

Oh 'es he does. Billy likes to do the footsie shuffle.

So strange! It almost seems like some dancing might be okay in some circumstances, even in Gothardland. If I were a fundie who wanted dancing at my wedding I'd word my wedding invitations, "Dinner and expressing joy for victory/delighting in the presence of the Lord to follow."

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
      This is pure evil
