Would people still accept the Duggars

We recently had a baby shower at my church for a gay couple who adopted a beautiful baby girl. They already fostered/adopted a ton of kids and it got me thinking about fundie families. If the Duggars were Black, Hispanic, Muslim, Homosexuals, Atheists, Poor & on welfare, etc. Would people accept them? I see a ton of comments from the Duggars fans not to judge them because they're a godly christian family with values but if the tables were turned I bet they would comment how they need to keep their legs closed and how they need to stop having kids. Or typical black/Hispanic family having kids needs to stop using our resources or how a gay couple are confusing their children and shouldn't adopt. I just hate the double standards.

Btw would love to see a show about this. Maybe tlc could choose a family that actually wants and really loves their kids( not saying that the Duggars don't) but a couple who makes each child feel special and needed. Not hauled off to their sister mom. I would love to see a gay couple on tlc.

Tlc has had many gay couples on their show a baby story. I think the draw to the duggars is the fact that all the kids are their bio kids. That's highly unusual and people are curious about the logistics of a huge family. I do think of some of the duggars less PC opinions on things are hidden from public view and if they weren't there would be a backlash. The duggars seem pretty savvy and careful about what they show to the public eye in that sense.

I hate to say it , but I don't think people would be as interested in the Duggars if they were a hetero couple / family of a different race say if they were black or Hispanic.

This country has come a long way, but even in non fundie circles there is a long way to go.

I'd love for them to feature a show about foster/adoptive hetero or homosexual families in a positive but realistic light,

DiscoveryHealth did two (?) episode special on a gay couple with ten (?) adopted children maybe two or three years ago but it didn't get picked up.

One of the main defenses of the Duggar family is "they can afford to take care of all of their kids and they aren't on welfare." If they were poor there would be a lot of outrage. If they weren't Christian that wouldnt draw fans from conservative households.

No, in agreement with the OP, I dont think the Duggars would be accepted as anything but conservative white Christians. Vyckie Garrison did a post on NLQ about how no minorities were present at a Growing up Duggar book signing-at least not that one. That makes me wonder if they were a minority, would they have such a following? While they weren't' directly on welfare, the Duggars had plenty of indirect welfare. Here is an older article on this very subject. Im not breaking link since it's old.

Definitely not if they were black or hispanic. I'd be interested in families from all of those demographics, personally.

"Double standards" should be the tagline of fundies

I think I would be more interested in a large family which wasn't a heterosexual white Christian couple who delivered them all. Theres plenty of those. I think it would be more interesting to have a show with more variety-a non white family, interracial couple, family who weren't Christian, gay couple, people who adopted a load of kids...

I think that if there was a TV show about a non white couple or a couple who followed a different religion with 19 kids, people would be outraged because they are trying to outbreed us and taking over. People don't care that outbreeding heathens is the main reason behind the Quiverfull movement, they will overlook that because the Duggars and Bateses are white Christians, but I bet they wouldn't if it was a Muslim family who were having that many kids, even though both Christian and Muslim fundies want the same thing-women having no rights, their religion to be the state religion and endorsed by the government, less education...

I would love to see a more inclusive show about large families, maybe showing a few families, who are all from different demographics, maybe a Christian one, a quite religious family who are not Christian, a secular family who have loads of kids for non religious reasons, a gay couple, someone who adopted some of their large number of kids, with several different races represented in the show (not just a token one to show they are inclusive, but a decent variety of different families). It would be interesting to compare the similarities between large families in different cultures and demographics.

I kinda know why a Black or Hispanic person might not find the Duggars or fundie lifestyle appealing. It's bad enough they already have these steer types and statistics against them. Then throw in having a bunch of kids and no education makes them look the other way.

I have numerous black relatives with 10+ kids including a cousin who is a preacher and has a Duggar sized family. If any of them were interested, and I doubt they would be, in being involved in a TV show I personally think they would be far more interesting than the Duggars. On paper they could appeal to Christians and they don't have the same griffting tendencies the Duggars and Bates do but I still don't think a show about any of them would be as successful as the Duggars are. Besides the fact that they live in more urban areas and are all around more socially liberal they wouldn't appeal to the revisionist history crowd that loves the Duggars. I've always had the impression that many leg humpers are drawn to them since they think they live like everybody did in the "good old" days when women stayed at home and people had values  Blacks, Latinos, gays, atheists, etc. don't exactly fit into their white washed images of ideal families from generations ago.

I don't think the Christian part matters so much - except that they are so extreme that many people probably like to watch for the "weird" factor. Look how much mainstream attention they got this year because of the unusualness of the courtships.

I think if they were non-white there would definitely be a lot of stereotyping and assuming they were poor.

Although, to be fair, I think there are a fair number of stereotypes floating about because they are from the south. I know I'm somewhat guilty of this :embarrassed:

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

Someone please remind me to buy peanut butter. Seriously, I have been meaning to get some for at least three weeks, and everytime I remember, the shops are already closed!

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
      This is pure evil
