Article in the Washington Post today about the Duggars. Ooh boy, their defenders make me so itchy, or something. :(

Please Free Jingers, with words so much better than mine, say something to this poor leghumper...

ARazorback

You should be ashamed of yourself for making such slanderous comments...It's painfully obvious that You have NO IDEA what you are talking about. I happen to personally know Michelle, Jim Bob, and Deanna Duggar (the mother of Amy). I grew up with the Duggars and went to the same church (FIRST BAPTIST in Springdale, Arkansas) and I went to school with Jim Bob and Michelle and they are the finest people that anyone could meet and they don't want their children subjected to ungodly teachings and the immorality that is rampant in our schools and society is just one of the many reasons they choose to home school their children. The popularity of their show is a testament that there are many people that subscribe to a Godly household and I praise them for remaining true to their values and the teachings within God's Word. There are many parents that can't even raise ONE child let alone 19! They have done a great job and they have a show that proves how much America loves them! THE DUGGAR'S---6 years and counting!!!!

I really . Really. Want to just say 'the ungodly teachings and immorality that is rampant' in...Gothardism?!? AND! That infuriating old stand by about the many parents who can't even raise one child, let alone 19 of the very best and most godly. But my tablet won't let me sign on to comment. Argh!!!

I was under the impression that Jim Bob and Michelle (and company) didn't go to a traditional church, but instead did a home church in their living room...so I'm calling bullshit on this one.

I said something to the leghumper. I'm sure there will be zero shits given, however.

Style points for the "I KNOW THEM PERSONALLY". Uh, huh.

In the meantime, I wonder what the proportion of actual viewers vs. those tuning in for the train wreck might be a week. I'm guessing the latter might be a bigger total than TLC might like.

no one is perfect and fundamentalist Christians that are ignorant of the world even less so. So this person insults all other people to hold up the duggers? how Christian tm

The way I read it, he went to their church growing up.

Nothing like homeschooling to make sure your child gets a good education, or anything like that. Just keep away from the ebil heathens. If those Christian homeschooling conventions weren't such a joke, I'd go to the CHECO one next time they're up here and "keep sweet" waiting in line...then let them know I'm an ebil heathen...we can be homeschoolers, too! lol No, better not. They'll never let those poor kids off the compound again.... :?

ETA: (Not let them off the compound for homeschooling activities.)

I am not responding, because I find doing anything with the Post to be a PITA, but I get so tired of people saying our public schools are full of immorality. And that our society is so full of immorality. I wish to God, and I may have to be the one who starts it, that there was a blog titled, "S**t is not really that bad, despite what the news tells you." about decent people striving on their journey through life. People are inherently decent. I would rather be a nice person in some immodest pants, then be an a-hole in a skirt, judging everyone else.

I just don't get how fundamentalists want us to accept their beliefs, and not judge them, when they can't reciprocate.

JB and Michelle never went to the same school. JB went to a private Christian school and Michelle went to the local public high school.

I lived in Arkansas, very near the Duggars, and I was employed by one of the FINE school districts there. That is a fairly conservative area, and the school districts are anything but evil. It has become accepted rhetoric to describe public schools as evil, but in the case of Springdale Public Schools, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, most of the school districts in NW Arkansas are filled with employees who are Baptist, Christian, and conservative Repubs -- things that should please the Duggars.

When I lived there, they attended First Baptist Church in Springdale, but since they don't interest me, I don't keep up with the Duggars, and I don't have a clue about their church preference now.

So true. Judging all schools as evil is like judging all non-fundies as evil

But but creationism is not taught and the truth about this being a Christian nation and that slavery was ok is not taught that's were the evil is.

Agree w/ u. But Fundamentalist Christians think they r perfect.

Fundies tend to emphasize the fact that they are sinners just like everyone else, but really think that they are better than us because of their "standards" or lifestyle or whatever. It's classic passive-aggression.

They do now, but I believe they did go to First Baptist years ago. It's a huge church, the biggest in Arkansas, and I think it's Cross Church now. That's where they had the service for Jubilee.

THIS. If Doug Phillips (is a Tool), Gothard, and countless other patriarchs have taught us, there is a fair amount of immorality that go around in the "Good Christian" world....

They had to go to a church that could afford to support Them while they did gods breeding work.

True but we have horns  so we're easy to spot

They're putting themselves into a kind of fundie prison by not believing that good people are everywhere. There are normal, good people out there in almost every walk of life. (not to mention what twin2 said, plenty of evil bastards in the church too)

I still remember the first time i went out in public without being dressed like a weirdo and it felt so FREE. Like, i was finally able to just be a person, not a signpost for religious freakdom. :D

Quite frankly, I feel sorry for the Duggars. They've built themselves a prison. They miss so much of life because they worry about what might or might not influence their kids or worry about being exposed to "evil". If you are strong in your beliefs and have taught your children well, they won't fly off the handle just because they go to public school or see an R rated movie or go on a date. To me it seems as if they have no faith in their faith, their parenting, or their children and because of this, they miss out on many great life experiences and getting to know many great people. If their goal with their show is to convince people to join their lifestyle, I think they are failing miserably and it has nothing to do with evil heathens, a lack of morality in the world, or "false religions". It has everything to do with their lack of faith and confidence in the lifestyle they try to promote. I'm certainly not the only person who recognizes this and that's why fundamentalists will never be the majority in this country. Heck, most of them can't even keep their own kids in the movement for these very reasons.

Congratulations! Your post has been chosen to receive a Helpmeet Raptureversary Award. Check Community Discussion for more details.

So true. And another reason why the whole quiverfull thing is going to go bust. The kids aren't going to put up with the lifestyle once they can decide for themselves.

I hate these winds. They are absolutely HOWLING here in SoCal. Not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight because I'm so afraid we'll get sudden evacuation orders the way we did with the Woolsey fire in 2018. There's no way of knowing when and where a fire might crop up and once it does, there's no containing it in these winds. I'm praying for the safety of our brave firefighters. My heart is with everyone in the Pacific Palisades and in Eaton Canyon near Pasadena.

The world doesn't need more people. If people want to have children, that's fine, but there is no reason we have to keep having more people.

      Winter snack: crispy chickpeas
Preheat oven to 400 F. Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas, then toss in olive oil and whatever spices you like. I use fried chili crisp. Cook for 15 minutes, stir, another 15 minutes, stir, repeat until they're crispy and delicious. Good as a snack, on salads, etc.
I am sharing my super secret chili crisp source just because I love you guys:

Happy New Year, all you amazing people! I just saw a (possibly joking) tradition online called Yule Boasting.

      My quick text version:
i will begin 2025 by distilling a barrel full of tequila from the agave plants in my yard, assisted by george clooney, who admires me greatly and will be sad and heartbroken when my plan moves ahead without further human assistance.
sky-clad, i will find my familiar, a malevolently clever curve-billed thrasher named Willie Wildman. together we will roam my neighborhood, putting together an animal army consisting of a coyote pack, a squadron of javelinas, and my local great horned owl pair, perseverance and ingenuity.
we will all consume mass quantities of tequila, paint our faces blue, and set out on yucca broomsticks to reach our nation's capitol.
we will swoop down on DC, screaming and howling, occupying first the capitol and then the white house, where we will become co-presidents and replace congress with the yacht-sinking orcas of the mediterranean. AND EVERYONE WILL FUCKING REJOICE.

It's crazy to think that it has already been 25 years since we were worried about what would happen when the calendars would switch over to Y2K.
