It is very public :) It's the call to prayer that is sung 5 times a day from every mosque. I find it beautiful not creepy.

Here's one example.

I have heard the call to prayer before, but that was wonderful :) Thank you for sharing it!

3am? I thought they prayed 5x/day,morning ,night and bfast, lunch and dinner.

I guess on the plus side,it could keep one very organized if you run your day by it precisely.Other than getting woke up at night!

It was definitely between 3 and 4 in the morning, maybe more like 3:30 am. There is a big political issue when you have a muslim population mixed in with a large non-muslim population, because the non-muslim residents don't much like being woken up in the middle of the night every night. Personally, I sleep like a dead rock and even sirens don't wake me up, but I feel for the light sleepers.

Yes. The "3:00 am" claim is ... very odd.

I kept hearing the early morning call to prayer almost a year after I was last in Malawi.

Yes, I also heard it echoing in my memory for several months after I moved away from ... Columbia, Mo!

ItsFuntoRun seems under the delusion that she is the only person here who has ever lived in a religiously diverse community or within earshot of a mosque. We lived quite close to a (then) brand new mosque in MO. It did cause some dissent amongst the locals when it first opened, but I enjoyed the call to prayer because I remembered it from my childhood. I'm afraid that it was my signal to take the dog out for her early morning pee not pray though.

I would probably enjoy that call to prayer, but I an extremely light sleeper, and if it had woken me up in the morning I would've been way less than happy.

By itself, it is not, in my opinion, creepy. I do not know if beautiful is the word I would use, but... I don't know. I wouldn't hate it of o were to hear it at a time when I wasn't trying to sleep.

Do you get accustomed to it after living within ear range for a certain amount of time? My only experience hearing the call to prayer was in the Old City in Jerusalem, so not much at all. I live in the middle of three churches and all three have bells that go off every 15 minutes to mark the time -- I have grown accustomed to that. Different sounds and lengths and all, but really my only point of reference.

I had a college friend who grew up in Dubai, where the call to prayer is obviously a frequent fixture. One year, her Christmas gift to all her friends was small, mosque shaped, battery powered alarm clocks that played the call to prayer instead of beeping when you set them. :D Although she was not Muslim, to her, it was definitely a comforting thing.

John has expanded a bit on the midwife situation. Mrs. Phiri is their midwife, and John has been having long bible studies with her husband, who is a Baptist but has not been able to attend church after moving. They may also be working with an Australian woman named Jewl who has been working to open a medical center for preemies and special needs babies. Lastly, they have arranged to borrow the Taylors' vehicle if emergency transport becomes necessary. STFU, Internetz! But I'm glad they're actually putting some thought into Esther's delivery situation. The baby may come within the next week or so...unless she's in labor for 11 days again.

They have been told that their vehicle has been delivered to Mozambique and will be taken to their location on a truck. It could be 3-7 days, or possible more because it's Shrader. They may also hold up delivery because the shipping company claims John owes another $250, but he already paid it to a person who is "no longer with the company" :? He is asking for prayer$ regarding this need.

I just came back from an imaginary conversation with John, and not to worry, John has the creepy Muslim prayer call situation under control. John is going to have someone donate him (for the children!) a megephone so that he can make his own call to prayer SIX times a day. He's going to use the Muslims' basic idea, but sing in English and replace all instances of "Allah" with "Jesus". He's also going to sing it to the tune of Yankee Doodle. Ya'll stay tuned because it's going to be a fundie vs fundie war of unwanted wake up calls and everyone is going to lose.

I also asked John how Esther is doing and he said "Which one of my children is that? Or is it an African?" I reminded him that Esther is his wife's name and he said "oh, yeah." He said that her pregnancy is very hard on him because it forces him to go to the kids to tell them to do certain chores around the house, and they don't do as good of a job as she does. He hopes she doesn't take as long to deliver this next baby because the quality of her cooking goes down when she is in labor, and John doesn't like African food.

Didn't Esther claim radiation molecules from the Japan earthquake/nuclear issue cause her early labor or something a few years ago?

Peaceful. I find the adhan the equivalent of a lullaby - it makes me feel calm and at peace with the world. Johnnie would be horrified - a Christian who enjoys Muslim music!

I think it was that it stalled or slowed down her labor so that's why it lasted 11 days (or something like that).

I just remember being so worried about her and the baby last time because we heard she was in labor and then nothing for like 7 days.
