A man killed his parents and 15-year-old sister with a shotgun then turned it on himself in their suburban Southern California home earlier this week, but the motive for the attack remained a mystery, authorities said Thursday.

Michael Sheer had attended Saddleback Valley Christian High School in San Juan Capistrano and played football as a freshman in 2007, the Orange County Register reported

He also loved bodybuilding, neighbor L.J. Otto said.

The Sheers were a "good Christian family" who homeschooled their children for elementary school, Otto said earlier this week. Amy Sheer had just started as a freshman this year at a private Lutheran school, she said.

"The mom was a homemaker, always making cookies," Otto recalled.

Mark Sheer was a business consultant who offered seminars for financial professionals. He also taught Bible study at a Lutheran church.

"They were literally the nicest family I ever met in my life," 21-year-old Kendra Leach, who knew the family through Mount of Olives Lutheran Church, told the Register.

Another article said they were involved in prison ministries.

Only the mom had a FB which was pretty locked down

She followed some christian peeps.

Another article said

One neighbor told the OC Register that she heard something like a child screaming coming from the home in the morning.

"It was just awful crying," said Anila Whitney-Miller.

The sounds that awoke her before dawn were so close, Whitney-Miller said, she wondered briefly if they were coming from her house. She heard no fighting or commotion before the screams.

I know it comes across like I'm always defending homeschooling......but I really don't see how homeschooling has anything at all to do with this tragedy. Yeah, the mom home schooled the kids in elementary, but this was an adult, and he had attended a private high school and public college. It would make as much sense to put a headline implying sending him to college was to blame, which is obviously ridiculous.

Just goes to show that a certain lifestyle guarantees nothing. Sad situation. Could have happened in any family. Who knows how long he had been disturbed.

I have to agree. That headline is just silly. And their church is one of those "come as you are" quasi- hipster churches. I was expected Karen Shupe and a sub machine gun. It is a stretch to connect this to religion at all.

I agree. It well might be that disturbing things about his upbringing will come to light during this investigation but blaming "home schooling" for this tragedy right now is just as glib as saying "Hollywood" caused last week's mass murder. I agree it just proves that no "Lifestyle" is 100% guaranteed to prevent terrible actions from happening despite the various reasons people do or do not home school or do and do not have religion and or money to dominate their lives.

The OP does not seem to be blaming homeschooling. It is the way certain groups of Christians think their lifestyle guarantees your kid will avoid these things.

To clarify, I don't have a problem with homeschooling in general. I homeschooled for a year and have a lot of HSing friends. On this forum we see some weird things come from SOME Christian homeschooling families. Sorry if I offended anyone or posted something irrelevant/uninteresting

I'm also not seeing anything in the headline that blames the shooter for having a homeschooling background, only that he happened to be homeschooled as a part of his background.

I wonder if we'll get more information as to why Sheer did this? This is such a heartbreaking thing to see, he must have been extremely troubled underneath the "perfect family" veneer.

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

Someone please remind me to buy peanut butter. Seriously, I have been meaning to get some for at least three weeks, and everytime I remember, the shops are already closed!

You know what I hate most about subtle racism? The gaslighting. Stop cosplaying as a nice person and say it with your chest.

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
      This is pure evil
