I know this is sadly acceoted in parts of Pakistan, but these stories still never fail to shock me. I can never understand anyone murdering their own daughter just because you don't like her choice of husband. Haven't her parents got that protective parental software in their brain? No love or empathy at all?

It is horrible we see religion and culture short circuit brains in the us too all the parents that let their kids die or kill them.

I know. The irony is your fundies in America slag off the Muslims for exactly this reason, and yet given half a chance they'd make it legally OK to do things like this to womenfolk who stepped out of line. And they can't see how hypocritical that is.

WTF? I know that it is futile to ask "why", so all I can do is imagine how terrified she must have been. Imagine your loved ones turning against you, and realizing that they are actually going to kill you. And no one is going to help. What a horrific, lonely way to die.

As per usual, I'll be under my desk, crying. If you want to join me, I'll share my ice-cream.

And I'll bring beer and white Cadbury fingers!

I'll tell you something. This story has made me resolve never to moan about my mum ever again.

I welcome you, your beer and your chocolate. :)

I know what you mean though. I logged on to moan about my dad. Now I just want to hug him, and thinking about it, it's sad. What kind of world do we live in, in which we're glad that our families don't want to kill us?

Pass the chocolate, and have some of my ice-cream.

Not sure if anyone heard about this case, but as it is a revolting patriarchal display, a women who was 3 month pregnant was killed in Pakistan, by her family in front of a court house for marrying a man she loved, instead of excepting an arrange marriage. Just disgusting!

No trial, no hearings, no holding her until the baby could be born... pure mob justice made up of her own family.

When they were done, they returned the body to her husband and walked away. I'm sure there will be no prosecution for her murder.

Yeah and if Bill Gothard and PP had their way it would be legal here in the states.

So sad. The father and those who participated belong in prison. How can any man kill his daughter who is 3 months pregnant with his grandchild and married to a man who loves her? I just don't get it. I just don't.

This was the first thing I heard when I flipped on CNN yesterday. I don't even have words for how horrible this is. I cannot understand being a parent and reaching this depth of depraved indifference to the life of my child. And the man who was to be the arranged husband also participated.

I say that I don't believe in capital punishment, but incidents like this sure make me question whether I really oppose the death penalty. In some way, government needs to send a clear message that these kinds of actions will not be tolerated. (Not saying capital punishment does that).

What makes this particularly heinous is that 20 members of the family participated in this, they did this right in front of the court and the father freely and proudly admitted that this was an honor killing. It's not an isolated case of one deranged family member. These people knew exactly what they were doing, and they believed that they had the moral right to do it. Any concern for their daughter and future grandchild was totally overshadowed by this idea that she had dishonored the family.

I'm deeply critical of the whole "umbrella of protection" doctrine and the notion that girls would need a father's permission to marry beyond age 18, in part because we see how horribly wrong things can go. At the same time, I don't recall seeing anything from the big fundies that would condone violence against an adult daughter who "dishonored" the family. [They do support other stuff that I'd consider heinous, so I don't think that it's just a matter of hiding their views to be PC.] If anything, they'd see killing a pregnant woman as a double murder.

I don't think capital punishment is the answer - we need more regard for human life, not less. I suspect the family thought that they wouldn't get ANY punishment, because most honor killing cases in Pakistan end up being dismissed or with just slap-on-the-wrist sentences. More than 1,000 women per year are victims of honor killing in Pakistan. 83% of Pakistanis believe that stoning is an appropriate punishment for adultery, and 78% support the death penalty for leaving the Muslim religion. Source: http://www.pewglobal.org/2009/08/13/cha ... d-society/ and http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/05/27 ... ge-police/. Pakistani law also allows the family the option of forgiving the killer - so family members can get someone to carry out an honor killing, and then simply forgive the killer if he is ever arrested. There is misogyny and fanaticism at the deepest cultural and state levels. This isn't something from a tiny fringe group far away. Pakistan has a population of around 180 million, it is a nuclear power and it receives over $1 billion per year from the United States for military/security aid.

In certain tribal areas of Pakistan, a woman can be gang raped as punishment for something a male member of her family did. And we are not talking about rage in the moment, it is a sentence that is actually handed down by village tribal courts after deliberation.

I really feel these comments of "oh, Steve Maxwell, Bill Gothard etc want the same thing" really cheapens and dismisses the horrors of these crimes, even though I know that is not the intention at all. Gothard belongs in jail, but there is nothing in his twisted philosophy that makes killing your daughter for disobedience acceptable. Same with Steve Maxwell and the rest of that ilk. They would certainly throw them out without a penny, but that is NOT one step below stoning and gang rape as punishment. It's OK to think these crimes are uniquely heinous and still think the likes of Gothard need to be stopped without equating the two.

And, Ron Paul's buddy Gary North, who says he wrote the homeschooling curriculum that Ron Paul put his name on, believes stoning is a great option... rocks are plentiful and cheap.

Once again grateful that I live in the United States, where such horrible things are properly prosecuted and the murderers punished. This is 2014, why the #$$%^& do these "(un)honor killings" still go on as if it were still the Middle Ages?

As for the fundies who use instances like these to hate on Muslims while saying that such behavior is OK as long as it's God who dictates the killing...I just don't know what to say. If it's not okay when the Muslims do it, it's not okay regardless of the so-called context of the Old Testament.

Turns out the husband of the woman who was stoned strangled his first wife. This shit just never ends!! :pull-hair:

WTF! Maybe the dad and son found out about the murder and that is why they changed their minds....not that it is an excuse to kill their daughter, wtf! Sounds like a murderous Jerry Springer episode.
