Did Derrick call him "Jim Bob" or refer to him that way for the camera? Either way, they had a relationship before he got to meet Jill. I imagine Ben is a bit intimidated, but I also think he probably knows 90% of this crap is for the cameras. If they had doubts about him he wouldn't be on the show....

Did anyone catch the close up of real shoes in the suitcase? Were those Jill's? If so that's one for all the commenters who ask if they ever wear real shoes!

Coming up next week: A Gothard Girl's Rite of Passage: Learning to grind wheat and use a Bosch mixer to make bread! Can't wait!

Regarding the Arkansas Razorbacks magnet on the car - in some states, there are no professional sports teams, so the population get really into the state college sports' teams, especially football and basketball. In Arkansas, the University of Arkansas Razorbacks play both at their school-located football stadium in Fayetteville (about 25 min from Duggars), as well as at a stadium in Little Rock. Everyone in the state roots for the Razorbacks.

Woooooo Pig Soooie!!!!!

Derick has had Jim Bob as a prayer partner (whatever that means) for I think he said a year and a half, so they know each other. Despite that, I really feel that we viewers have missed a chunk of Derick's relationship with Jill. There was so much physical contact between them during the last two episodes and they had only met in person for the first time? Something doesn't add up. Josh and Anna couldn't hold hands until they were engaged. Ben and Jessa are supposedly allowed timed sidehugs only when they meet, leave, or for pictures.

I maintain that what doesn't "add up" regarding the physical contact is that, despite what Jill claimed about allowing sidehugs (I think that was cut to mean during courtship, not upon "meeting"), Derick asked Jill to court off-camera when she got off the plane. Hence, all of the side-hugs and other touching that crept in would have been allowed in the parameters of what is seemingly now allowed in Duggar coutships.

I maintain that the courtship proposal we saw was totally for the cameras (as was Derick pulling Boob out of that store for that painfully awkward conversation last week). Derick's visit to the jeweler??? Jill and Boob were there for two weeks, but even so, I doubt that a custom piece, especially one in which gems are being set, could be made that quickly. All.for.show. Or as Jill said, "Hollywood."

Which, ironically, they typically hate.

Although I believe Derick grew up religious, I don't think he grew up Fundie. I think he has had girlfriends before, held their hands, put his arm around their shoulders and maybe even kissed. I think Jill's way of courtship is pretty new to him, but he is respecting it because he respects and loves Jill. They had been talking to each other via letters, Skype and text for months before she flew across the world to meet him. Just because they hadn't met in person yet, doesn't mean they didn't know one another pretty well before they did meet. I think Boob respects Derick because he knew him as a Christian missionary long before he was Jill's beau. Derick is mature, smart, easy going and a high achiever. He's a great match for Jill. I think he will respect her views and her religion, but I think he will soften her too.

It is still weird for me to watch such a big moment like asking to court or getting engaged and there is no kissing and long hugs etc.

When they showed DQ as a little girl, I thought it was Josie. They look just a like.

Why do they keep saying all the older girls are getting married and moving on ... so we must pass down all the chores to JoylessAnna? Jill is the only one engaged with a wedding date set. Perhaps there is more to this story. Hmmmm.

Has anyone noticed how frazzled and disconnected Michelle looks on the show as of late? Her interaction with her younger children is very awkward/ James with the sling shot and the chess set lesson last week. She totally ignores the younger girls and doesn't take part in any of their activities according to the camera. If most of the older kids leave the nest sooner than she expects she is headed for a nervous breakdown. Her m.o is popping out howlers then handing them off to the older kids to raise when she feels its time to procreate again. The Crash is coming for Michelle and its beginning with the Derick and Jill wedding. Michelle doesn't know how to be a mother to her children.

Yeah, I think Jill needs to pick up People (that magazine her family is so fond of appearing in) to see what is going on in Hollywood. I don't think there are a whole lot of courtships and side hugs going on in Hollywood. The necklace was nice though and I thought it was cute when the taxi was pulling away and they sort of held hands. Those hand-holding vampy harlots.

It's very interesting, it's just my opinion, but I get the feeling that Jill is somewhat of a favorite gets what she wants knows how to get what she wants, and do no wrong in the eyes of mom & dad.

She's never been especially articulate or anything, but I do think she changes the way she acts and speaks around her dad. Probably mostly a product of being taught to defer to men generally and her "headship" specifically, but she seems more firm and opinionated when she's away from the family. I also think she feels like she's smarter than JB, which is probably not uncommon in a person her age. Also probably true in her case.

I think she's learned how to play the game with her parents. I'm not necessarily bashing that, it's a good way to get what you want if you can put up with it. I do wonder, though, what would actually happen if one of the kids decided to just defy their parents on camera. Maybe JB has enough say to get the footage pulled, but what would the actual reaction be? I'm not sure if JB&M have the same level of control that they used to.

With the exception of financial savvy, my cat is smarter than Jim Bob Duggar, but I had to put him on a diet since he was looking like Smuggar.

What's with the grinding wheat mentions lately? Is that an ATI thing? Saw they wanted a grinder for their registry...

I think it will be interesting to see Michelle with Derek and Jill. Jessa's and Jill's rules seem to be similar but not identical.

Jill and Derek seems so genuine. I think in a real world situation Ben and Jessa would have been friends for a longer time. But because of how things are run Ben said, "Courtship" and Jessa said, "Ok." They seem a lot better than when they started but I'm glad Dill is getting married first, it just makes sense.

Yes it is. One of the wisdom books talks about how important it is to make bread daily and you have to do it all from grinding to baking.

Poor JoylessAnna. She said she'll probably make bread about once a week. Wait until she learns that bread-making will be a daily task. Normally, baking bread is relaxing; kneading is a stress-reliever. But their bread recipe calls for mixing and kneading in a machine, rising for 20 minutes (my dough has always taken much longer to rise), and then baking for 20 minutes.

I have never used a machine so I don't know how they work. But all my bread recipes require at least 6 hours of rise time.

20 minute rise and 20 minute bake? :pink-shock: Bread rises for an hour and bakes for an hour. It Is Known. ETA and that's just the first rise! If you're proofing a sponge or doing a second cold rise, it can be up to 24 hours.

I'm not judging anyone who uses a breadmaker (ok, I am, you are all less Titus 2 than I!) but it doesn't feel like breadmaking to me if I'm not mixing it and kneading it and checking to see if it's doubled. What I like best is the process, plus the fact that I have delicious homemade bread when it's done. Take either of those away and it's not nearly as cool.

Now I have to hope there's no one around here grinding their own wheat, who can lay the Titus 2 smackdown on me!

I think the whole point of the emphasis on each of the middle kids hobbies is to get viewers more interested in the teens, since many of the older kids who have been the main focus of the show will be leaving. I think they'll of course do storylines involving courting/marriage/babies, but for purposes of the show they need to have people involved with the kids still at home.

I had the same reaction. What a resemblance.

Wonder which child she'll spend one-on-one time with next, and what the activity will be.

And the religious purpose of this is....? I understand fresh bread on the Jewish Sabbath is common, but I never knew any reasoning

I've only ever baked Sally Lunn and that takes around an hour to rise, if I recall correctly.

Religious reason: Gothard said so and he is closer to god than the apostles.

I use the evil breadmaker and even with that it takes 3 1/2 hours from loading to finished loaf. I'm not sure what the Duggars are making.

It's to keep the women busy. If they aren't busy grinding their own flour and baking their own bread they might look around and realize how miserable they are.*

*Said as someone who loves to bake fresh bread, but only when SHE wants to.

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
