The Ten Most Anti-Christian Movies of All Time

Some of those movies aren't anti-Christian but do have a bad guy who happens to be Christian. The mother in Carrie, for instance, is an example of a character who twists religion to suit her insanity. She is obviously crazy. But that doesn't make Carrie an anitChristian movie. Most people understand that she isn't meant to be a representative of Christianity.

An anti-Christian movie would be one in which all the depictions of religion were negative and false or clearly distorted.

Jesus Camp is a documentary and is not anti Christian. It is antifundamentalist or anti extremists.

Footloose is not supposed to be an accurate portrayal of most Christians either. Its been years since I saw the movie but I don't think that anyone walked away from it feeling that it was supposed to be a deep theological movie.

I haven't seen the other movies so I can't comment.

Now I will go to bed singing Every Sperm is Sacred... thank you. :)

I've heard that song and I haven't even seen the movie that it is from.

I didn't think Footloose was Anti-Christian. I thought the message was more, "There's room in Christianity for things like dancing." Anti-Fundy? Sure. Anti-Christian? Not so much.

That was "The Meaning of Life," not "Life of Brian." The crucifixion scene can't be beat: "Life's a piece of shit, when you look at it." Do da Google if you're not familiar.

I don't think Dogma was anti-Christian either.

Wow, that's one hell of a list. It even includes a documentary, Jesus Camp. (TIP: If you look bad when the facts are presented, don't blame the facts.)

Morgan Spurlock interviewed the young man from Jesus Camp recently. He is 18 now, watches Harry Potter movies now, and he no longer wants to be a minister. However, he still has that zeal and passion that made him so magnetic as a preadolescent and is still grateful to that nut job camp leader. I saw that he was wearing a wedding ring too.

Anyway, I know that Joan of Arc with Ingrid Bergman was intended as a religious movie. I remember seeing it as a child and came away with the idea that she was psychotic and I couldn't understand all of the adulation.

"Life of Brian" should have made the list. that one's ACTUALLY somewhat anti-Christian. And "Saved!" and "Religulous," which were both mentioned in the comments and while I haven't seen "Religulous," from what I've heard of it, it should DEFINITELY be on there.

At the same time, none of them are particularly anti-Christian. "Saved!" is against the judgemental, holier-than-thou abstinence movement. "Life of Brian" actually has Jesus in the opening scene. Not one word is actually said about Jesus himself, it's basically about people rushing toward 'prophets' and 'messiahs' while not listening to them at all. Plus all the Roman scenes? Classic Monty Python silliness.

None of the ones that made the list seem anti-Christian, and I've seen most of them. Jesus Camp is a documentary, ffs! If those films are anti-anything, it's anti-religious insanity. I've seen "Carrie" like 3 times, when I was a Christian and when I was an atheist, never got an anti-Christian vibe. Probably helps that Carrie's mom was looney tunes with or without Christianity. (OT, but that statue of Jesus at the end still gives me the creeps!)

I've seen Footloose too, I didn't get any anti-Christian bias out of it. Then again I didn't watch the whole movie...

None of these films are really anti-Christian. They are either anti fundamentalist Christian or anti crazy people who use Christianity as an excuse. Anyone who'd get offended by any of them would probably be either a fundamentalist Christian, or a crazy person who uses Christianity as an excuse.

Same here, and I'm a Catholic. It's been years since I saw it, but I remember it being almost like an inside joke, poking fun at all the craziness of this religion - not being against the actual message of faith, just the trappings. And the end, if I'm remembering correctly,

the main female character, who had turned away from religion at the start of the movie, ends up pregnant with the second coming of Christ

ETA: Yeah, what ElphabaGalinda said!

I'm not shocked that Saved! ended up being mentioned in the comments, but I found it very pro-Christian as a movie. It's more anti-rigid thinking than anti-faith. My favorite line from that movie is "Why would God make us all so different if he wanted us to be the same? "

Yeah. Footloose is definitely not anti-Christian because Ren points out in the bible that dancing is ok. Plus, the baning of dancing and alcohol had more to do with the fact that the Preacher lost his son due to his son acting like a teenager and partying. It had nothing to do with Christianity.

The hell? Footloose wasn't anti-Christian!

Yes, the preacher and townspeople went over the top in banning dancing (and as the preacher's daughter and Ren proved, they were being unbiblical in doing so), but it was out of genuine love and concern for their kids that they overreacted - one of the kids died, after all. They just wanted to keep the kids safe.

Although the kids did protest, they initially did so by trying to reason with the adults, using the bible to do so. Their protests weren't disrespectful (unless you count the 'dance your ass off' t-shirt). That is some BS right there.

I pretty much disagree with most of the choices, actually.

I would nominate THE DEVILS OF LOUDIAN (sp). It documents the torture of those who didn't comply to the Catholism of the Middle Ages.

Do you mean "The Devils" based on the play by Huxley, "The Devils of Loudun"?

If so, I'd like to say that, as with practically all the movies on the original list, this film/play criticizes extrem/crazy/fundamentalistic behavior (in this case the happenings in one town) and does not portray christianity in general (or the christianity of middle-ages in general) and those films are certainly no documentaries in the strict sense, they do not document unbiasedly, but want to entertain and use to this end more or less accurate historical incidents.

To me, the original list is really not anti-christian. I have seen most films, and dogma might be slightly blasphemous to a catholic, but otherwise... no, really not anti-anything but abuse.

Slightly OT, but did anyone else see the trailer for the remake of Footloose which will be "coming to a theater near you" soon? It features Julianne Hough, of Dancing With the Stars as the preacher's wayward daughter.

I haven't seen the trailer because I have no interest in seeing the remake. The original is a classic.

      Stupid loneliness!
Kid 1 went back to college (yeah! But sad foe me, she stayed with me all summer. It was nice to start a new phase in our mother/daughter relationship)
Zero prospects on dates. (Not that I have tried online dating, scared of that but I have reached put to a new group at church, etc.
I asked a friend to go to dinner the other night so I wasn't eating alone, again. The friend had plans, all my friends always have plans. I see stuff on social media, I'm never invited. I'm single, I'm the 3rd or 5th wheel.
My one parent friend at kid 2's fall sport won't be there because their daughter made varsity (Yeah for her!!! Seriously happy for her. Sad for me for another sport I basically sit alone, did that majority of spring and summer sporting events.)
And now I'm crying as my mom told me 2 different funny stores that former teachers remembered about my twin. Both stories were about how they got a crack out of my twin's antics (my parents went to a funeral today and saw former colleagues). Teachers remember me (after all I was a twin and teachers' kid) but none would have memorable stories of me.
      I feel invisible.
Don't worry, this will pass,  it always does. I just need a pity party for a few days. I'm not in anyway going to harm myself. As lonely as I am, I have a very full life I (usually) love. I just needed to vent and cry for a moment.
If you are still reading this, thanks Fjer. 😊

Absolutely awful about the fires on Maui. In 2019, I stayed in Lahaina. I liked to sit on the sea wall, which is the only structure left now, and watch the water. People are receiving help, but many had to leave pets. Please donate to the Maui Humane Society, which is leading efforts to find, treat, and reunite pets.
