Wow. I know I read the "Gift of Grace" story years ago. Reading it back now, I can't seriously believe I and the fundie culture at large ate up such stories, and that single SAHD only dreamed of such wonderful "romances". Now when I read it, there are so many red flags and omg moments when she describes how and why her courtship evolved.

And of course, I am just amazed at how much Natalie's story of her marriage has changed over the years.

The following is what Natalie posted on YLCF about the collapse of her first marriage. IIRC, this appeared in the fall of 2008, after a long silence and before she was turfed out of the YLCF club for marrying James Ference. She later reposted it on her own website (pursuethebeauty.com/2008/09/01/healer-1/):

As many of you know, I was married in the fall of 2007. Early in 2008 my husband forced me to leave our home. Our merciful God knows all that I did and went through to keep the marriage alive. Because of His grace, my offering of my life and my love was not and will never be wasted. But a marriage requires two people. Against the counsel of our families, counselors, and pastors, my husband divorced me.

Note that there's no mention of the military or other contributing factors.

Wouldn't you think he'd want a wife and a bunch of kids by now, if he's really so uber-conservative Christian? Unless he's "not marriage material"...

I always thought Rick sounded like kind of a twatwaffle - really, he goes trolling on the Internet for a "cute, modest girl who wants to be a stay at home wife and submit to her husband" and Natalie is head over heels that when he went shopping, he picked her?

I think her dad failed entirely in not tossing Rick out on his ear. There are SO MANY red flags in the "courtship story," so many things between the lines of tears and having to learn how men's minds work (WTF?), how could Dr. Nyquist stand up at that wedding and just....GIVE Natalie to him?

If Daddy is supposed to protect his baby girl, he sure fucked up with Natalie.

I find it very positive that at least Natalie is using her own voice now, not writing in random quotes of various authors anymore. I feel that this is a step in her healing, and hope for the best for her.

For those that don't remember James Ference,  he was a con man who married YLCF poster-girl-for-purity Natalie Nyquist when she was on the rebound.  She'd just gone thru a divorce after less than a year with Prince Charming, a marriage that came after Natalie did All The Right Things, including a Daddy-vetted courtship-resulting-in-marriage.  Natalie married James, not realizing he was still married to someone else and that she was his.....4th wife  (can't recall exactly), not 2nd. Plus he didn't just have 2 kids from a previous marriage, he had 3 - two from the marriage, one from an affair. 

James lied like the sociopath he is, Natalie bought it,  they fell wildly in love and got hitched (though not actually LEGALLY, not that Natalie knew), her best buds at YLCF issued a statement saying they didn't approve and then wiped pretty much everything she'd evert written from the site in a breathtaking display of grace and loyalty in theory but not in practice.

Natalie, with the help of FreeJinger sleuths on Yuku, eventually had enough verifiable info on James to walk out.  Which she did less than a month post-partum. She divorced the now-disappeared loser, he disappeared, and she seems to have moved on to life as a single mom to her son.

James popped up again when he fake-married the absurdly young Chelsea Hodapp, daughter of a religious fanatic, in an invalid zombie-themed ceremony that took place while he was still legally married to Natalie. Continuing the tradition, he legally married her later.  They have two kids, per her FB page

But what has James been doing, you ask?

Fucking around on Chelsea, apparently. 1/28/2014, sued for paternity by unknown party. Judgement on 9/04/2014 ordered that the birth certificate be altered to reflect James D Ference as the father and ordered to pay child support.

But it's going to be hard to pay for those kids.

Sentenced 9/23/2015 to 1 year supervised probation after passing a bad check, supervised by Central States Mental Health Consultants, Inc.

Sentenced 4/15/2016 to pay $50 fee plus unspecified costs for driving with a revoked or suspended license.

Sentenced  4/18/2015 to 2 years unsupervised probation, suspended sentence for criminal charges of resisting or interfering with arrest.

Probation violation filed on the basis check case on 5/03/2016, warrant for arrest issued 5/27/16, bond set at $2500.

James, I don't think you're going to be able to convince anyone you're really sorry and won't do if again this time.

There was an entire website called jamesferneceisaliar run by some exes he ran out on after running up debts in their names. Chelsea's dad got into it with some of James' exes in the comment section.

What a horrible path of destruction; this guy has at least another 30 or 40 years to lie and wreak havoc, i.e.,  more bigamy and children in his future. Is he close to reaching the threshold to be featured in a 20-20 piece?

Chelsea was wife #5.  No updates on JamesFerenceIsALiar since 2014.  Maybe he's in prison?

I read Chelsea's father's Facebook recently and there were a bunch of vague posts, then in comments a few clarifications, that Chelsea has disowned her family; she has two kids with James and apparently they moved away and cut off her family. Chelsea's father has taken off his rose colored James glasses and accused James of domestic abuse.

It's all so disturbing. That man has wreaked havoc his entire adult life and there are still women who choose to be blind enough to get involved with him.

The path of destruction *is* horrifying -- chillingly similar to what a serial killer does because James is just churning through human victims.

I almost think it's fitting that Chelsea got tied up with James. She comes from a relatively insane world. I think her father is off his freaking rocker, in more ways than one. Her siblings and mother are definitely under his thumb, and not in a 'oh, isn't that sweet' way. I think she was trying to hard to get out of that life that she dove head first with James as a vehicle to leave the crazy behind.

James Ference appears to specialize in "rebound" relationships, which is how Natalie Nyquist ended up with him.

As a predator, he probably has finely honed instincts about who to go after. His success rate seems high but perhaps there are women out there who saw him for the loser he is & escaped entanglement.

I agree. It's far too easy, for someone looking, to spot those who are 'desperate'/rebounding/looking for escape/change. I know this, sadly, from personal experience as I fell for it hook, line and sinker and entered my first relationship after getting divorced - text book rebound in every way, including him being *right there* to catch me when I fell. Fortunately it didn't last long as even in my most desperate state I still had an instinct for survival. But, I can see how easy it is for someone to get caught up with someone who is in the right place at the right time without realizing that person put himself there intentionally.

It's especially sad when it's a young woman whose entire life gets fucked up because of one bad choice. We all make choices, and deal with the consequences of bad choices, but such life altering ones as marrying someone like James Ference, and having kids with him, is far more damaging and has much longer lasting consequences.

Didn't it occur to anyone that is a little weird for a guy in (presumably) his 30s with 4 previous marriages and 4 kids with 3 women, no fixed address, no money, no job, and two separate Crimestoppers/ripoff TV news segments about him to be sniffing around a teenage girl?

My insomnia the other night led me back to that Yuku thread where his 2nd wife and former girlfriend joined FreeJinger to talk about him with us. The man really is a sociopath.

Whilst reading on Yuku, it seems that Natalie, an earlier James Ference wife, was also a fundie -- her dad was head of the Moody Bible Institute. Does James stalk fundie circles and find his victims at church?

It's possible. IIRC, in Natalie's case, she "married" James without her father's approval, possibly without his knowledge. The lack of parental authority/involvement in her relationship with James Ference is one of the things that caused Natalie's erstwhile "friends" at YLCF to dump her like a hot potato.

I finally looked at Chelsea's dad's FB. Sure enough, pictures of her and the kids and him saying they were estranged and she wouldn't come for holidays and insinuations of spousal abuse. Of course, he's a special kind of crazy himself. As a cradle Catholic, I get SUCH a kick out of the old hard-line conservative "Vatican II was a mistake!" crowd who were lecturing everyone on Pope As Voice Of God when former Nazi Youth and former head of the Office of the Inquisition became Pope, but now that we've got a Pope who actually seems to look forward instead of only behind, well, suddenly they're mumbling maybe the Pope isn't infallible after all. He's only infallible when people like Curt hear what they want - as soon as they're being encouraged to put that "Love Thy Neighbor" stuff into practice and no one is telling them they need to say the Rosary in Latin eight times a day due to spiritual warfare OMG, the Pope isn't so important, it's the believers that make the Church. Heh. 😁
