“The War on Babies

Recommended Posts

I’ve been on Nancy Campbell’s Above Rubies mailing list for some time, now. I usually ignore the messages and send them to the digital trash bin. Occasionally, however, one catches my attention by the shear audacity its message.

Such is the case with one of Above Rubies’ newest media offerings.

All the advertising for this DVD is poorly written, it seems, and would be in bad taste even without the fallacious arguments attributed by Campbell and her crew to those who support the widespread availability and use of birth control (let alone abortion).

The title: “A War on Babys (sic)?†(The question mark is in the title.)

The advertisement only gets worse from there:

The DVD's...

THE RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP SPECIAL!

DO YOU WANT TO SAVE NEARLY $15.00 ON ONE DVD?

THE BABY WAR: Defenders and Defectors DVD

Further in, the reader finds the following appeal:

Every person who believes they are a Bible believing Christian should watch this DVD and encourage others to watch it with them.

Because this message is paramount for everyone in the church to see and hear, we are making it available for this ridiculous price of only $7.50 In fact, at this price, you can purchase three DVDs for the original price of one!

The advertisement also includes some links, one of which leads to an FAQ about the DVD and its contents: thebabywarfilm.com/faqs-and-objections.html

The FAQ begins with this: “Answering objections to stuff in this film.â€

I would encourage everyone to read the FAQ, lest you miss laughable material such as this “objectionâ€:

So what are you saying, that we should stop using birth control? - Uh, that means that we would have more kids, and that's pretty freaky and would change my life dramatically!

Oh wow, but how they’ve totally nailed it! That is precisely why people would object to giving up their access to birth control products – because having more children would be “freaky†and life-changing.

It’s important that a person writing an FAQ for a controversial product be able to step into the shoes of those who would oppose his or her ideology. Whoever wrote this pig slop is as incapable of empathy as he or she is of putting together a proper sentence.

Most people would object to Quiverfull – and make no mistake; this film is QF propaganda - because following that ideology would produce more children than most people can adequately feed, let alone educate and train for the rigours of good citizenship.

There is another class of people often demonized by proponents of QF as well: Those women – and it’s always women targeted for the kind of criticism I’m about to discuss – who choose not to bear children for any number of reasons. They’re tarred as selfish, and yet these are the very people honest enough with themselves to determine that their parenting may be inadequate for any number of reasons.

Take, for example, those women who live dangerous lives – particularly those on the wrong side of the law: QFers can argue all they like that they would prefer women who become pregnant outside wedlock and while otherwise unstable to bear those children as opposed to aborting them – and yet there’s no doubt in my mind that most QFers would look with open contempt upon a woman with multiple children by different fathers, especially if she requires government support to feed and clothe those kids.

They who would recommend adoption as solution – only a few such individuals would actually do the adopting. Others might fear the alleged effects of “generational sin.†Still others would turn down children who are older or who were born disabled or addicted to drugs, choosing instead from the much smaller pool of healthy infants who share the same racial heritage as their new ‘parents.’

If QFers were as honest with themselves as those “selfish women†who use birth control to prevent pregnancy, they would be grateful to such women rather than hateful.

I hope Campbell’s agency paid a ridiculously low price to whoever wrote this ad copy. If the video is as poorly considered and constructed as those efforts to sell it, then its creators deserve to lose more than just money: Whatever credibility they may have had should disappear as well.

There are some in the the fundie community who think women who hsve unplanned/unwanted pregnancies should be obliged to give birth. The unwanted babies can then be adopted by deserving fundie couples. There's big money to be made doing private adoptions.

yes, deserving fundie families like Campbell's children's, who then return the kids when they don't want to be parents to them anymore.

There's a "War on Babies" in the same manner as there's a "War on Christianity in the US". Nonexistent.

Btw, if someone wants to argue against this stuff in a Christian manner, you can use the arguments Catholics usually give, who are allowed to use NFP and are not mandated by the church to have as many children as possible: There is no human person before conception. If there is human person, no wrong is being done by not conceiving, because there doesn't exist a person that COULD be harmed. If there is no harm done in not conceiving, it is allowed to act in this manner.

I just came to post about this same email! The price may be ridiculous, but what's more ridiculous is that I haven't unsubscribed sooner! I did today though, can't stand this shite coming into my view...

I really don't have anything to add to this conversation but when I read the thread title I had the image of a little baby in a helmet with a rifle and ammo. Then I thought- that couldn't be much of a fight, babies can't aim for shit. Could not stop giggling.

How can there be a war on babies? People aren't forbidden to have babies in the US. "War' to a fundie doesn't mean being possibly killed, shot at, or prevented from doing anything by the law. Apparently the words war and persecution means that someone-who can't do anything about your choices-might disagree with you or do something differently than you.

The actual war on babies being fought in this country is being waged by the very policitians these folks support- the ones who want to cut Medicaid and SNAP, cut WIC and stop Headstart. But, of course, they really only care about the unborn babies don't they?

Absolutely!! Life is oh-so-precious while still in the womb, but once the child is born the tune changes to "bootstraps, kid, bootstraps!"

Mind you, it's not quite so important that they won't try to make money off it.

I like to picture my IUD all decked out in camo, hiding off to the side of my uterus with the sight of its sniper rifle trained on my fallopian tubes.

There is a "War on Babies" but it's not the war that the "Above Rubies" crowd is thinking of. Children are being deprived of education, healthcare, and other vital services by politicians who have no interest in their welfare once they are born. Actually, even that's not true, since these politicians won't help low-income pregnant women obtain pre-natal care. Children of color in particular are being criminalized at young ages and put through the school to prison pipeline. In many parts of this country, taxpayers would rather spend money on prisons than schools. Indeed, public education is being systematically dismantled. So, yes there is a "War on Babies" and the readers of "Above Rubies" and their ilk are largely to blame for it.

That's true, then they only care when the child is military age so they can become cannon fodder.

I'm so sick of the phrase "War on ______." And War on Babies gave me the mental picture of babies trying to run drills in bootcamp and in army uniforms. It's amusing to me.

The concept of generational sin was what made me realize that not all people who claim Christianity are good at it.

Damn; there's a war on babies now too? Ugh! Can we please stop starting all these wars? I do not have time to fight the:

1. War on Christmas

2. War on heterosexual marriage

3. War in Christians

4. War on men

(Any other wars I forgot about?)

Not to mention planning the gay agenda, plotting to kill babies and earthen for breakfast, and committing acts of random crime (as all good atheists should).

Come on people, I have a LIFE!

War on Easter

War on Religious Rights (that only extends to Christians)

Was against the Constitution (which they don't understand)

Some food for thought from the late, great George Carlin. Damn, I miss him. He was truly one of the sharpest comedy minds we ever had.

Campbell seems pretty desperate to get more people to donate to her "ministry". This video is right up her alley, intended for exactly the type of audience she is trying to attract.

My sweet pup was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. She passed away in my arms on Thanksgiving morning. It all happened so fast. She didn't want to eat anything the day before, but prior to that was ok. Knew it was near time and had booked an appointment to take her next week. However, she decided for me. She was only 8 and really was one of the best dogs. She never met a stranger, human or dog. Life isn't the same without her.

I made my first Granny Square! After nearly 30 years of knitting and crocheting this was a project I never did. Until now! I needed something to do with my rest of very colourful yarn and now I am very happy. I need to try different needles with my yarns but I think I found something nice for the future.
I needed only 3 different youtube videos until I found a person who explained the concept slowly and repetitive and with words I can understand. I hate when these tutorials make me feel dumb.

We had to put our 14 year old dachshund, Trinket, down today.  She was fine Thursday, but by mid-morning yesterday, it was apparent that something was really wrong,  She had zero energy, lost her appetite and began walking into corners.  By morning I knew it was time for her to have her final visit to the vet.  She had lost about a pound and a half recently.  RIP, Trinket!

Horrific! A 6 year old boy was murdered, and mother severly injured, in a hate crime in Chicago. Reports say they are both Palestinian Muslims and were specifically targeted because of that. Thankfully the man who did it is in custody
      This is pure evil
