Obviously how the Duggars run their kids lives isn't working, because they're depressed, but Boob and Mullet are too stupid to see it. If you can't see that your kids are sick of the dog and pony show by how they act during appearances, than you're blind. Get a clue!

I fear Jim Bob and Michelle also are of the overly narcissistic variety and don't really care what the children think. First they picked a control freak cult so that they can define any resistance by the children as rebellion and second they are persisting in a reality TV show and what normal person does that?

Cousin Amy's birthday is September 30, 1986. She is rapidly approaching 28 and I would hate to compare her to any of my children. She's fallen way behind the curve and is showing no signs of wanting to catch up. Ken should like her though. I think she's probably going to church and hanging around waiting for a strong man to support her to be a SAHM and housewife.

I also disagree that Amy is perfectly normal for her age. She's not normal at all. I honestly can't think of one woman I know even 2-4 years younger than her who lives like she does. Even the girl I mentioned who goes from boyfriend to boyfriend just like Amy goes to university or college and works to support herself.

I am so sick of the Duggars and their "our way is the best way" attitude. Life is not a one-size-fits-all thing. My brother got his girlfriend pregnant when he was 18 and she was 17. They got married, had four children and now have three grandchildren. He has a fine career in avionics due his training in the Marine Corps. I have three family who were in the Marines. What's the deal with the Duggars and their lack of military service?

I have always wondered this too. I've always assumed Gothard is anti-military service because it requires young people to be in close quarters with "heathens" and therefore too risky for de-programming of his indoctrination. Can any former ATIers shed light on this? And if this is the case...I'm curious what his glossed-over reasoning would be. Because I can imagine he would have to word it in a way that didn't turn off the uber-patriotic folks in his following.

Yesterday I watched a talk on narcissists and it was almost uncanny how good the description fitted Michelle. Narcissists don't see themselves as having a disorder, as long as they are happy, they assume that everyone around them is as well. They see themselves as special people, who only interact with other people as special as them. Because they're so special, normal rules don't apply to them and they expect others to treat them with respect and submissiveness. Criticism, no matter how insignificant, is deadly to them, they can't handle it and often lash out and systematically harm the person who stands up to them.

They often have little to no empathy for both people and animals and the concept of putting yourself in someone else's shoes is alien to them.

I used to wonder how Michelle could sleep at night, I thought on some level she must have known what she deprived her children of, that they are only shadows of what they could have been without her and Jim Bob's intervention. But now I understand better, it's entirely possible that the thought has never occured to her and that she's as happy as can be.

If one of the children stands up to Michelle and JB, things are going to get very ugly, but maybe then the child finally realizes what kind of people they are.

I have a close family member with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (undiagnosed of course because they'd never admit they had any kind of issue) and it's amazing to me how many fundies seem to fit the criteria. I strongly believe that fundamentalism attracts people with certain personality disorders or psychological issues, and NPD is one of the main ones. The worst thing is that narcissistic parents tend to either create more narcissistics (i.e. Josh Duggar the golden child who is now himself a raging narcissistic), or non-narcissistics with a ton of issues and baggage to overcome as adults.

I think that Michelle is a narcissist and probably Jimbob too, and the whole family is very dysfunctional. I had a discussion about this with a friend, about the narcissist we know and how she treats her kids when theyre little compared to when they are no longer new and cute, and I mentioned how similar that was to some of the large family parents we see on TV. I do worry for the kids, as we said about Doug Phillips, narcissistic rage is scary, and if a kid one day says "No, I am not doing this anymore", their parents will put them through hell and then make them do it anyway. Or kick them out, but then it would make the parents look bad, and then they wouldn't be able to brag about their 19 kids and drag them along to everything. I think instead, any kid who rebelled, unless they actually ran away themselves, would instead be pretty much tortured off camera until they stepped back in line.

I worry the most for the rebellious seeming ones cause they are most likely to be at the receiving end of narcissistic rage, the ones who just want to please their parents and make everyone happy because they are at risk of being taken advantage of and walked over, the ones in the middle who are basically neglected and forgotten (although they seem to be the luckiest because they can get away with more as nobody notices), and the ones the parents love most as they have a chance of growing up to be spoiled douchebags......that's all of them :(

Michelle honestly thinks depriving her children of a normal childhood is the right thing to do to keep them close to God/their religion! It's too bad they can't trust their children to make mistakes and choose their own path, hoping they stick to the religion they were raised in but allowing them to come to that decision on their own.

I also don't understand why they send all their sons off to ALERT but not join the military. This would be a way for them to serve their country and be self-sufficient. With that many kids, they can't all own a car lot in TT Arkansas. Especially because they are such loyal republicans and want to serve in public office.

I did see an interview once of JimBob and Michelle when they were asked if any of the children might join the military. Her response was that maybe some of the sons or even daughters would end up joining! Makes me think she does maybe realize what she is doing to the children if she has to lie about them "maybe joining the military if they decide." If she knows that her and JimBob would actually never allow the children to do this, then why wouldn't she just say that outright? She must have some idea that the cult they are involved with is wrong or she wouldn't bother lying. She must know mainstream society would catch on.

In my opinion, that makes it worse. Becuase they are not just brainwashed into thinking that controlling all aspects of their children's lives is the right thing to do, they actually have some incling that it is wrong and won't admit it.

I think it's interesting that most fundies are against being a part of the military or law-enforcement. What would happen if the entire country turned fundie? Well, I guess then we wouldn't need law-enforcement. Everyone would just be godly and never commit crime. :roll:

Being in the army forces you to be around different kinds of people. During WWII, men from WASP, Jewish, and Catholic backgrounds began to interact with each other for the first time as equals. Even though the armed forces were segregated, being in the military allowed black servicemen to see that there was more to life than Jim Crow. If Gothardites joined the military, they would realize that people from other religions aren't evil and that they can aspire to do more with their lives than be a stockboy or a brood mare.

Not yet. I think once they start marrying kids off by the dozen for ratings, TLC will discover that a wedding a minute is just not that interesting to people, and then they'll cancel.

I would be interested in seeing how all the kids turn out and who they end up with. Probably not enough for entire seasons... but periodic specials are something I would watch.

Gothard doesn't approve of military service, so therefore the Duggars don't.

I don't understand why fundies keep their kids uneducated. God forbid something happens to the parents(sickness,death,etc) What will fundie kids do if they don't even know how to write or read at their level. No basic math skills,no job skills. Fundie parents can't expect all their kids to have tree or car lot businesses.
