Zap apples (my little pony)

So my littles would like a my little pony party for their birthdays.

I had this brilliant idea to make zap apples instead of a cake. So they are basically apples that are rainbow coloured. So caramel covered apples. Sounds easy enough.....

Except I am not sure what to do to get the rainbow stripes on the apple.

Dip the apple in caramel.

Then should I dip the apple in chocolate (white?) then paint with food colouring?

Then should I paint the caramel topping with melted chocolate?

Dip the apple in caramel.

Then while still tacky roll in coloured sprinkles that are laid out in stripes?

I can't seem to wrap my head around it.

The sprinkles/stripes sounds way too chancy if you want to make precise stripes. I like the white chocolate/food coloring idea.

I tried the caramel and rolled it in the sprinkle stripes. No go. It was a horrible mess. So I guess I need to find some coloured cocoa butter to try now. Has anyone worked with cocoa butter to paint?
