Lina did convert to Catholic

Elizabeth Esther's a catholic now?! What is it with Catholicism being in vogue for crazy people?! I used to read her back when she was an semi- atheist and having some kind of meltdown upon realizing she was an introvert and not an extrovert (apparently meyers briggs was her religon du jour at the time)

I think it's kind of bizarre and sad how people need a religion to inform their identity. I think that being a reform Jew is part of who I am but it's not my entire identity. I think Lina needed to have religion to give her life meaning. I'm curious to see if she sticks with Catholicism or jumps ship in a few years. Probably the latter.

EE joined the Catholic church in 2009 and her DH joined this year. In the past few years, she has posted everything from how she will never go to Mass again (after a bad encounter with a priest) to how the Church is right about everything. EE also strikes me as some one with some personal issues that uses religion as a mask for them. She seems to bounce from extreme to extreme, and that's only what we see in her blog. I could totally see EE being the Mommy Wars kind of mom if her kids were younger.

I actually like this blog. I wish more fundie girls would question some of the things being forced down their throats, but I know that nice fundie girls don't question anything.

*I meant to say I liked this particular blog post. I don't like the whole blog. I don't think I could like the entire blog of anyone super excited about their religion. Too much to stomach at once.

I sure hope Lina blogs about this because she will be the most Catholic person in the world.

And mustn't it be terribly awkward and embarrassing to know that the whole internet knows that, a couple of months back, you were the most faux-Jewish person ever? Back in the day you could write about the fad du jour in a diary and then burn it when you were over the phase...but now? 'Tis a truly cautionary tale about oversharing on the internet.

I really truly wish we could get Abigail and Paulina to meet - can you imagine the atmosphere as they sublty try to convince each other that each of them is the better Catholic?

I'm a Catholic convert (2 years ago now, after being raised Lutheran and spending my 20s in evangelical churches). In defence of converts, not *all* of us are nutbars who take the Church's teachings to the extreme. Some of us were just looking for a deeper expression/experience of spirituality and ended up in the Catholic church. Some of us (me!) wonder how we ended up where we did....

I look at Lina and Jen of Conversion Diary and Cam of A Women's Place and wonder if we actually attend the same church. :S Their expression of what it means to be Catholic and mine are completely different.

I definitely understand that some converts go off the deep end in their search for perfection and fulfilment. I believe this is a personality trait issue, not a Catholic convert issue.

My intention with this post is to dispel the myth that Catholic converts are zealots. It is true that many are. My experience is that most of us are just trying to find our way in life.

I agree, not all converts are nutbars. I was raised Catholic and I've met several extreme converts and I've also met people like you who wanted a deeper expression or experience of spirituality. Even though I'm an atheist now, there are things about the Catholic church that I still like and respect. The converts who become extreme drive me crazy. Abigail is the best example of an extreme Super Catholic convert. Catholic FJers can't stand her. As for Lina, I see her basically becoming a younger version of Abigail. She has given off the loon vibe for a few years now. I''m not familiar with the bloggers that you mentioned. I read Brianna Heldt's blog and I read the late Barbara Curtis' blog A Mommy Life. Both are/were converts and both are a bit extreme, but not crazy like Abigail.

TT suddenly became a Software Engineer, and now with a new job he's a Senior Software Engineer. Pretty awesome for a guy without a college education!

Interesting to see so many (sane) converts around here. I don't really talk about this (not yet, anyway) but there's a possibility that I might end up joining the Catholic Church (I'm protestant right now). I most definitely would not be a zealous convert. Those convert bloggers played a big part in making me want nothing to do with the Catholic Church for a long time, really.

re: Lina, the fact that she hasn't posted for months makes me wonder if she went through with it or if something happened - more marital problems? Or did she find a new religion that she likes better? I doubt she'd go Mormon or Muslim but I could see both appealing to her in ways. I think she'll remain within the Abrahamic faiths, but she's rapidly running out of options. Orthodox, maybe. I feel like she'll stay away from the more obscure sects because she's really craving community, especially with her husband not sharing her faith.

If you have questions about converting, please let me know (via pm). I'm involved in RCIA in my Parish now, so I (kinda) know what I'm talking about.

As for Lina, I also want to know if she joined or not. My guess is no, given that she hasn't posted about her reception into the Church (which one would think would be a highlight).

And let's not forget that one who is available to her local parish if they have any questions for her about how to do Mass right, in spite of their felt banners. It's so hard being the Best Catholic Ever.

I just wanted to say, don't let Catholic bloggers put your off the Catholic Church if you are interested in it. I fell down the Catholic Mommy Blog wormhole after the Barefoot and Pregnant lady was posted here with her Birth Control is for Sissies t-shirt. I discovered all these blogs and honestly, I have never in my life met a Catholic in person who was like these people. I have lived in a couple states in the US and I have lived abroad and seriously, most of us are just average people. But what does an average Catholic have to blog about? "Went to mass and hit Denny's for breakfast. Came home and we all took a nap. Volunteering at the church festival next weekend." Catholic bloggers from what I have seen have very extreme personalities/views/lifestyles and for the most part are very conservative. They fascinate me, but they are in no way representative of the average Catholic, which is why the probably network so much online. They are outliers even within their own communities.

I'm also a convert. I'm not crazy like the bloggers. I converted because the Catholic Church made sense to me. I was raised in the baptist church. I didn't like the fire & brimstone, you're going to hell you sinner- stuff they shoved down your throat. I love the rituals of the Catholic Church. It was where I was supposed to be. I don't agree with everything the church teaches--birth control for one-- but there are many others who don't either. My opinion with the extreme converts is that no matter what religion they would be involved in they'd take it to the extreme.

I have yet to meet anyone as crazy as these bloggers so I'm glad they stay in cyber space. The most traditional thing I've seen were at a Latin mass there were families with their girl's heads covered. I can't imagine meeting one of these crazy bloggers in real life. The majority of them complain on the blog how their churches aren't Catholic enough it's like how extreme can some of them go.

Abigail and Paulina should meet up with Rick Santorum. It's not who's the better Catholic, it's who's the bestest Catholic.

I'm not Catholic. I am (very) atheist, supports the Communist Party, feminist, sometime I can be agressiv and offensiv against religious people (but where I live, there's no religious people) etc ...

Before, I lived near a Cistercian monastery. I love Gregorian chant, that's what I'm studying for my work, and I have always been passionate by history of liturgies. I went to the monastery every day to listen to Gregorian chants and attend mass. Just, sit down, listen to the beauty of Gregorian chant, and attend Mass, something repetitive and soothing. Sometimes I talked to monks or people attending mass. atheist from an atheist background, I was a bit curious, and none were as extremist these bloggers. Now that I live in town, I miss the mass and the offices, but no parish - apart from the traditionalist of Archbishop Lefebvre - offers Gregorian chant.

Extreme converted also exist in politics. From time to time, the Communist Party, you see them. They are crazy, read the entire Capital of Marx in a week - it took me two years, justify the horrible communist dictatorships, are in all manifestations - violent, if possible. Then after two years, they disappear. We find them the Socialist Parties / UMP / Workers Struggle (a very very very extreme communist parties). These people need to be fully in what they do. Then they get tired, and they change.

Do you think it was Jocelyn Dixon?? Lina use to follow her blog faithfully. Jocelyn is how I found Lina in the first place.

I'd love to know what Jocelyn thinks of being called a "cult leader." And what the rest of the Feelin' Feminine fangirls would say about that.

Are the links to Lina's old blogs up anywhere? I'm interested in reading her older stuff (and about the whole Jocelyn thing; I missed that whole thing).

She doesn't care she enjoys being in control from being miss religious know it all to befriending and siding with her sister's abusive ex-husband to entering a relationship with a married man (its all in previous threads on here). People like her play by their own rules in life no matter what the situation is they have to control it whether its like night and day from one extreme to the next. It's all about whatever suits her for the time being.

My mom told me about a woman in her parish who wears head coverings every week to Mass. There was a Catholic blogger discussed here who got into wearing head coverings and she has two young daughters who also wore head coverings. I can't remember that blogger's name. From what I remember her husband had attended Ave Maria Law School for a couple of years before he transferred to a law school in Michigan.
