Shirley Temple, the child star who sang and danced her way through many movies in the Thirties, continues to act in the Forties and became the US Ambassador, first to Ghana and then to Czechoslavkia, and the US Chief of Protocol died yesterday, February 10 at the age of 85. Shirley's films helped keep 20th Century Fox afloat in the Thirties she was so popular.

Shirley was perhaps the first celebrity to go public with her diagnosis of breast cancer. She wrote about it in McCall's magazine and well as spoke about it on TV and radio. Her courage and forthrightness helped to save women's lives.

Shirley also did a TV show for NBC of fairy tale adaptations in the late 50s. The Ideal Toy Company re-issued Shirley Temple dolls which were very popular in the Thirties and were pretty popular on re-release.

ETA: I found a couple of years ago that she was a distant relative by marriage.

She wil be sadly missed. I don't think anyone else has come close to matching her. She started show biz at 3. The child labor laws have changed now, too.
