Different treatment for headcoverers?

I was off to lovely Walmart to buy a garbage can today. It is sprinkling which means an automatic headscarf for me as we know my bald head issues when the hair gets wet. I am also wearing a long sleeve black and white striped shirt and a crazy black designer skirt which is just below knee with black clogs. I would not say I look fundie, but maybe conservative.

Anyway, I bought a garbage can and I just left it in my cart with the new top connected. The cashier didn't even look inside, just rung it up. The last time I have bought a garbage can(we go through them often) they did look inside and I have seen them check inside others checking out.

So, was my cashier lazy or do I inspire trust in my head covering? I could see the Seven Sisters going shopping and I doubt anyone would think they were shoplifters. even if they carried 7 watermelons out without a receipt. :)

Yes, this site now makes me think every little behavior is fundie related! ;)

I think the cashier was just lazy :-)

Most fundies though, would put their stock in the headcovering. How many times have we read about fundies who believed they are treated "better" because of their coverings? Where's the barfing emoticon?

I thought headcoverings were supposed to spark distrust and persecution? ;)

Yeah, me too. The cashier was actually persecuting you by not looking in the garbage can because.... umm.... hmmm. You should probably post this on a fundie's blog and they could find the persecution in there.

Funny, I may go to work tomorrow with my own version of a headcovering. I did a "do it yourself" keratin treatment that has to stay in for 48 hours and I look like I have the worlds worst case of dandruff... maybe my boss will be nicer to me?

I've wanted to wear a hijab for a while now when I have an oily hair day. There are some pretty fashionable ones out there too. There are a lot of Muslim-owned stores in my area. I could get one at the Sari Sabine store for half off now if I hurry before the sale is over. No offense to any Muslims or non-Muslim's out there.

Everyone at the office knows I'm jewish so they'd think I really went off the deep end. I looked all over the house but the only thing suitable happens to belong to my dog. Its his bandanna that the groomer put on him the last time he got a bath... it may have to do!

I wore a headcovering today because my shower in the new apartment is backed up, so I didn't get to wash my hair. No one treated me differently. I have a sad.

Oooo, I know, the cashier was actually persecuting you because he/she was so distracted by your head covering that they neglected to do their job and dared to notice your difference! persecution !!!!!!!!!!1!!1!!!

But seriously, probably had nothing to do with the headcovering and probably just someone being lazy at their job.

I have been seeing teens and 20somethings with head coverings who were definitely not dressed conservatively--oh no!! Headcovering is becomign worldly!! Separation anxiety!!!

I wore one yesterday and a burnt orange one today. I do think they look nice.

I'm also eyeing this one... :D http://www.etsy.com/listing/69446396/ra ... dread-wrap

Uh-oh, if you wear the rainbow-colored one, they might think you're a *whisper* lesbian! and target you!

I'm so glad I'm not a part (or, as whichever Maxwell who wrote the blog posts about daddy's b-day bash says, 'apart') of a religious group that requires women to wear a head covering. I get hot really quickly and I don't like things on my head, so it would drive me crazy. Plus, I think it's ridiculous. Women have to go to all this trouble to hide themselves while men get to look normal. Ugh.

There's a Muslim family whose kid(s?) go to my son's school and I see the parents when we pick him up at the end of school. The wife is in a full-on burqa while the husband has slacks and a button-down shirt. It just seems so unfair and unjust.

There is a large Muslim population in my area and I notice the same thing all the time. I've also seen a few families swimming before; the girls were wearing those swim outfits (kind of like the ones the Duggar boys wear), but the boys just wore trunks without a shirt.

Today my hijabi is hot pink. Yesterday it was purple. The day before that it was lime green. Can't say I'm treated any differently, but then, we have a large hijabi population here. The only difference I have is that I get a salaams from hijabi sales clerks.

AbuS (the husband) always always always wears long pants in public. When he swims, he wears track pants and an exercise shirt.

I was looking at the male population yesterday at the masjid, and all but one was wearing long pants or a robe. Most looked as modestly dressed as their wives, except that they were either bare headed or wore a cap, while the women folk wore scarves.

Maybe that with the wedding ring, the toddler, and the spouse (or "Army Spouse" lapel pin I wear when he's gone) will throw 'em off that they'll be too confused to say anything. ;)

How about a sheitel instead, then? If you go on eBay, a nice one will only set you back several hundred dollars ;)

So.... I wore a scarf today on my head today. Besides the "you look really pink", "what's up with your head", and "did you hurt yourself" comments... No one treated me differently. Head cover FAIL!

Squeakster, can you please explain the reason for head-covering for women? Is it about covering the hair?

If it IS about covering the hair, what about women who are bald for whatever reason (chemo, alopecia, etc.).

Is it specifically covering the hair for Orthodox Jewish women once they're married? I don't understand shaving your head and wearing a wig, or just wearing a wig, or always having your hair totally covered ("Curb Your Enthusiasm" episode where Jewish woman can't be with a man after sundown and she and Larry are stuck on a ski lift. He won't jump down, so she does. The extremes always seem so, well, extreme to me). Hair is hair is hair. Some have nice hair, some don't. I guess I just don't get it.

I think the cashier was probably just being lazy. I'm a cashier, and there's a Muslim family that come in all the time. The women all wear head coverings but I still check their hundred dollar bills for watermarks like I do everyone else.

On a side note, there are three women in this group but each one always comes in with the same man. I kind of wonder if they're all married to him, cause he's the one who always pays...
