Nathaniel Darnell is courting

I have a close family member who happens to be both a fundy and a specialist in teaching writing and literacy. In his opinion, if you can spot the agenda, it's propaganda not fiction (and a failure by definition). I think I have to agree with him on that one.

I tried to add this to the previous post, but am getting a "can no longer edit that" message.

I had never heard of the brand of shoes mentioned in that little racist scene, but clearly that detail was important to Nathaniel, so I looked it up. He misspelled it!

allenedmonds.com/

Allen Edmonds Shoes. Very good shoes. Not inexpensive, but not the most expensive shoes either. Well made, can be "rebuilt" / refinished. One of the few shoes available for men with very narrow feet, says the wife of a man who wears 13 AAA shoes who has been buying from this company since the 80s. I'm guessing the author doesn't get his shoes polished all that often, because I've never seen a shoe-shine person with polish all over their arms.

The whole "master" thing --cant' you see people whose reading list is so steeped in the books that VF/Scott Brown pulls from Guttenberg Project, puts in a new cover and sells, written in the 1600s, or antebellum lit, thinking people talk like that today?

Why is a Senator running for Congress?

And, why is the conversation about exposing "the snake he is" happening within hearing distance of the "media box." What kind of idiot Senator has strategy sessions in public?

I am also going to say, "Sires and Sons" sounds like it should be about horse breeding.....

I don't know who has looked at the excerpt, or if people are going by the quotes I posted.

To be fair ('cause, let's face it, there is plenty else wrong with this book and that scene), the man doing the shoeshines is addressing a 14-year-old, so it is "Master" as in "addressing a boy" not as in "addressing a slave owner."

But I can't help imagining that working in an otherwise needless scene in which an AA man addresses a kid as "Master" made the author very happy.

I can't help but wonder about the line "the last thing she felt was a tiny kick deep within her bosom." Bosom usually refers to the chest, so either she's carrying a weird alien baby, an ectopic pregnancy in her chest that hasn't managed to kill her but has managed to survive long enough to kick, or the author is very confused about anatomy.

I'm still thinking that addressing a boy as "master" is not remotely common in modern America. I have 6 nephews currently ranging in age from 20-10, and I doubt any of them have been called "Master Whatever) by anyone, certainly not beyone the age of 6ish and than tongue in cheek.

I know -- that cracked me up.

I suspect it's the last of your list, since he is just courting now. I guess he don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies (as he, no doubt, would have a character as offensively described as Prissy in GWTW say).

Oh, I do think he went out of his way to work it in, or, even worse, just naturally heard an AA character saying it as he pictured the scene.

But I just wanted to be totally fair and aboveboard in my snark.

Has anybody read his book, "Glory, Duty, & Gold Dome?â€

From the amazon description (I'm guessing this synopsis was written by the author since it's predictably poorly written):

On a scale of 1 to awful, just how awful is this book?

It is beyond funny to me how out of touch fundies are with the real world. Do they have any idea that's it not actually legal to "euthanize" coma patients? And why in the world would someone (anyone) be trying to "abort" the fetus of a coma patient that was (I assume) going to be taken off life support anyway? Of course, this scenario is legally interesting: if a pregnant woman is in a coma, who decides what to do with the fetus? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that unless the fetus was injured in the car wreck or was a danger to the mother, the family/state/hospital/whoever would err on the side of keeping the baby AND keeping the woman alive. Hospitals run up astronomical medical bills trying to save people's lives rather than risk getting sued for not doing enough. If there's any chance the woman is going to wake up and/or her family is going to claim the kid, they're not going to do some needless abortion on her. HUGE medical liability.

This is where it becomes painfully obvious that ND is getting his legal "expertise" from some kooky right-wing pretenders.

Edited to add: there's a thread about this legal issue here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20443 ... so at least in some states, it is damn near impossible for a pregnant woman in a coma to be taken off life support even if she has expressly stated that she wants to be. So yeahhhh. I mean, this is clearly ND's wet dream, but the big, bad, boogeyman state that just goes around "euthanizing" and "aborting" for fun doesn't actually exist.

Edited AGAIN to add: I read the reviews and it looks like the plot revolves around the woman's husband wanting her taken off life support. So basically ND is advocating acting against the wishes of a family about how to use the woman's [dead] body. That doesn't sound like 1984 bullshit to you, ND?!?! Oh, wait, the state is GOOD if you can use it to force other families to do things you want. I see. Lesson learned.

You noticed the kick in her bosom too.

Angela has a very weird anatomy indeed. She held her body rigid "while her eyes sunk [sic] down to focus on her waist" and managed to run out of the office carrying her face in her hands. The mind boggles.

Also hair is usually coarse not course.

Where did Natty get his JD -- online?

Why yes! Yes he did!

Oak Brook College of Law

Is Oak Brook College of Law a correspondence school, or distance-learning school? Is there a difference?

The California Bar has two designations for non "brick and mortar" law schools: correspondence and distance learning. To qualify as a distance learning law school, the school must provide interactive classes and require students to participate in at least 80% of such interactive classes. While OBCL programs do have interactive components, OBCL desires to offer students the maximum amount of flexibility with their studies. Consequently, OBCL is currently considered a "correspondence" law school, even though most of the coursework and exams are done through electronic means. For example, Oak Brook College does utilize online coursework in the form of downloadable lectures, streaming video, online course management software (we use Moodle) and live chats.

Another lung foal? I hope the pregnancy does not last 2 years.

I think the author is confused about a lot of things. Anatomy, literature, law, women, Doug ....

ND is NOT "Gay." More likely that's a rumor spread about him by people wanting him to not have success.

Welcome, CloakNDagger -- your first post! Do you know Darnell personally?

Of course he's not, Vision Forum is a haven for manly men, dedicated to the Christian ideal of women and children first and anaconda hunting.

And I can see why there's a conspiracy to spread rumours to sabotage his success - why, he's a self published ebook author and self proclaimed renaissance man - the liberal establishment is shaking in its boots and desperately trying to think of ruses to discredit him. Shaking, I say!

Presumably, the only ones trying to discredit this mighty man of God would be us EVIL LIBERALS, for whom- wait for it- gay isn't an insult!!!

Thanks for playing and try again, CloakNDagger!

Him not knowing where a bosom is or that there won't be any kicking felt there while pregnant isn't a rumor and that is more likely to result in him not being successful than people here saying he seems gay. Doubt you want to address his writing skills, though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, from the way you worded that, I'm figuring you mean someone in his life.

I find it hard to imagine you mean the people here on FJ -- for most here, a man's being gay (no quote marks needed -- it's a real thing) would not be thought of as a detriment to his success.

I don't think anyone here has heard an actual rumor that ND is gay. If you know of such rumors, know who the rumor-mongers are, and would like to tell us, go for it.

But, in case you meant that we are the rumor-mongers, you might want to read the following.

We tend to ride the idle speculation bus -- that's the nature of discussing people who need to hide a lot about their lives to fit a rigid image. It's hard not to wonder what is hidden, that they would not need to hide in the wider world.

It's not that we think all unmarried people are secretly gay. I would imagine most of us know many single people of all ages, and don't wonder about their private lives at all.

It's because marrying and having children is such a big deal in the groups we discuss that someone not doing so fairly early makes many of us curious.

With men, it often leads to wondering about their sexuality or if they are needed to contribute financially, with women, to wondering if their parents are keeping them overly sheltered or want them home to raise younger children and do chores. But really, we know it could be for a vast number of reasons, or no particular reason at all.

It would fit with the unfortunate and growing belief that any true believer Christian Man and Any true believer Christian woman can be married successfully, since the roles are defined in the bible and all they have to do is follow the rules.
