Duggar talk with hairdresser today

My youngest son decided he wanted a haircut so off we went to the mall. The hairdresser asked him if he was ready for school and he said he was homeschooled. That brought up about 15 minutes worth of questions from the hairdresser. She (about age 20) started with "I watch this how called "The Duggars" and I said "Ummm, yeah, I know the show, we are not THOSE kind of homeschoolers. We are a secular group." She then asked me what kind of religion the Duggars were and I got to explain about that and the lifestyle etc... She said "that sounds like women are not values and held back." "EXACTLY" I said. She was not pleased. YAY, another "normal" person sees the evil lurking under the surface of the Duggar lifestyle...

I'm glad you told her about the Duggars' lifestyle clibbyjo. It just takes a little info for people to realize that the Duggars aren't the ultra sweet/perfect family that TLC makes them out to be.

I am taking a speech class at college this semester and have seriously considered doing a speech on the Quiverfull types. I think that the Today Show absolutely fauns over the Duggars and treat them like royalty lifesavers. On the episode where Josh and Anna went on to find out Mack's sex, Anne Curry said something like "she's a pretty pregnant woman don't you think". I think that the whole Crew was almost worshiping them.

I loathe how the Today Show fauns over them. The Today Show will never ask the family hard hitting questions and the anchors clearly buy into the "sweet wholesome" image that the Duggars throw out. The Duggars love getting attention from GMA, Today Show and other shows and media outlets. In interviews, the Duggars come off as pretty smug and sometimes they have bigger egos and narcissism than actual celebrities like actors, actresses, musicians and sportspeople.

Sometime back I was watching clips of Pauly D from Jersey Shore at the Grammys' red carpet and a few singers pretty much ignored him. Katy Perry was one of them. I'm not a huge fan of hers but I could see why ignored a dumb guido. She works harder than the JS cast and she is probably annoyed by the fact that people like that are hanging out around places like the Grammys and other big events, when they aren't performers or journalists. If some of the Duggar kids were more in touch with pop culture, they would flop at red carpet events. Celebrities would ignore them solely on the fact that they have a reality show. I also watched a video of Kylie and Kendyl Jenner interviewing the Glee cast at the Glee movie premiere and you could tell that those actors/actresses loathed having to be interviewed by two reality show brats who are pimped by their mom.

The Today Show is really the only venue the Boob and Mullet can successfully pimp out their kids. Once the show ends, I predict the Today Show will be less inclined to invite the Duggars on the show. Mullet will probably weep when there isn't an annual Today Show appearance for her.

I meekly interrupt this thread for a correction.

A faun is a man with ears, horns, tail, and legs of a goat. Pronounced 'fawn'.

Mr. Tumnus is a faun.

I really hope that the Duggars fade back into the background. I hope they go back to Arkansas and are never on another magazine, show, book, or any other media ever again. By the way, the Jenner/Kardashian clan wears on my nerves too. If I ever spoke to my mom the way Kylie and Kendall do then I wouldn't have a face left.

P.S. I loved the Narnia movie fauns and all even though when I was a kid it scared the poop out of me (the old animated version).

Also, I've seen way better looking pregnant women than Anna. As my dorky dad would say "she is not a major babe at all". She's not buck ugly but not someone that I want to fawn over either

The Duggars will probably fade into the background in a couple of years. The only they can keep the show around is either or another Michelle pregnancy. The Jenners/Kardashians are pretty annoying but at least the Kardashian girls sort of have their own lives. I think Kris Jenner would be good friends with Boob. Both enjoy making money off their children.

Not sure how to quote someone on here, but to the PP who used the term "guido" to refer to a member of the Jersey Shore cast, let's try to avoid using ethnic slurs, shall we? While having never watched the show, I can discern from commericals and such that most of the cast is as dumb as dirt, but that's really no reason to go around insulting an entire ethnic group.

Seriously? I have never seen Jersey Shore(remember I am highbrow and I only watch Family Guy)but when I post a new topic about the Duggars I hate to see it get derailed to Jersey Shore!

I would like a faun to clean my house. A house faun?

Sorry for the OT!

Dude, really, the hooves would tear your floors up. You'd need to find some sort of hoof-cover.

I say guido, dago too, but I'm Italian myself. When I say guido, sadly, I know of what I speak.

You know what - people who are calling people out for their offensive opinions and personal beliefs should be able to take a little gentle criticism of their own. Big girl/boy panties, folks.

I agree. Oh and by the way, the JS cast refer to themselves as 'guidos'. If you've never watched the show, then it's obvious you would have no clue that the cast refers to themselves using derogatory terms.

I don't have a telly and I've never seen Jersey Shore and also don't know what a guido is. Is it just rude for someone of Italian background, or? Also where does it come from?

Let's look at the OED, shall we?

"Etymology: < the Italian male forename Guido, perhaps with punning allusion to the correspondence between Guy, the equivalent forename in English

U.S. slang (usu. derogatory).

A person regarded as socially unsophisticated, esp. one whose attire and behaviour are viewed as typically lower-class and suburban; spec. an Italian-American man, esp. one who is aggressively masculine and vain regarding his appearance and possessions."

First record of this usage: "1985 - Record (New Jersey) 24 Mar. f1 Russo proudly calls himself a ‘Guido’, a term used in local discos to describe a guy who is flashy, macho, and cool."

The casting for Jersey Shore was based on getting people who were the "most" guido and proud of it. The whole show revolves around their ideas of the guido lifestyle and "codes." I'm quite sure none of the cast would be offended by being called a guido; it's an integral part of their identity. Obviously they don't represent most people of their community.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a racial slur (that doesn't make sense anyway) but it's a kind of stupid stereotype. It's not a particularly strong insult, at least in the area where the JS cast is from, mainly the suburbs of New York City (and where I grew up as well).

Sorry for the continued derailing.

Many thanks for this! Explains it perfectly. Sorry for the derailing too, but with a connection as slow as mine some days you just have to ask...cause you'll not get shown.

I would like Mr. Tumnus the faun to fawn over me. Having him played by James McAvoy made him strangely defrauding in those Narnia movies!

      Stupid loneliness!
Kid 1 went back to college (yeah! But sad foe me, she stayed with me all summer. It was nice to start a new phase in our mother/daughter relationship)
Zero prospects on dates. (Not that I have tried online dating, scared of that but I have reached put to a new group at church, etc.
I asked a friend to go to dinner the other night so I wasn't eating alone, again. The friend had plans, all my friends always have plans. I see stuff on social media, I'm never invited. I'm single, I'm the 3rd or 5th wheel.
My one parent friend at kid 2's fall sport won't be there because their daughter made varsity (Yeah for her!!! Seriously happy for her. Sad for me for another sport I basically sit alone, did that majority of spring and summer sporting events.)
And now I'm crying as my mom told me 2 different funny stores that former teachers remembered about my twin. Both stories were about how they got a crack out of my twin's antics (my parents went to a funeral today and saw former colleagues). Teachers remember me (after all I was a twin and teachers' kid) but none would have memorable stories of me.
      I feel invisible.
Don't worry, this will pass,  it always does. I just need a pity party for a few days. I'm not in anyway going to harm myself. As lonely as I am, I have a very full life I (usually) love. I just needed to vent and cry for a moment.
If you are still reading this, thanks Fjer. 😊

Absolutely awful about the fires on Maui. In 2019, I stayed in Lahaina. I liked to sit on the sea wall, which is the only structure left now, and watch the water. People are receiving help, but many had to leave pets. Please donate to the Maui Humane Society, which is leading efforts to find, treat, and reunite pets.

Nebraska’s new football coach, who is involved in an organization called Man Up Ministries, labels certain players “Alphas” and sometimes “extreme Alphas” and the local paper has a nice piece on why people objecting to the term “alpha male” are wrong and it has a “nice ring”. 🤮🤮🤮🤮
