I guess if it's not child abuse unless it leaves bruises, it's not domestic violence unless it leaves bruises.

I have a friend whose husband spent years pinning her against walls during arguments and punching the wall next to her head. Shit like this comment is what led her to think it was normal, non-abusive behavior.
