Thank you for sharing this. I had not seen it previously. It's so strange and surreal for me, as an adult, to watch a documentary about my childhood experiences--of course, we were in a different state and different church from the woman featured in this video, but so much of it rings true: the mandate to homeschool, the submissiveness of wives to their husbands, the emphasis on children becoming politically active, on building a house as you live in it in (deep in the country away from prying eyes) order to remain debt-free, the idea of raising children up to become warriors in god's army, the reliance on church discipline. I realize how bizarre it all sounds.

Her story is tragic, but she seems to have found peace, purpose, and a new identity post-Quiverfull. But as a survivor of these cultic practices myself, I wonder how her older children have fared.

Okay, let's see...

Woman with 9 children in the quiverfull lifestyle--seriously drunk on the koolaid--decides she has had enough of abusive husband so files for divorce. She is then subject to church discipline, which requires her to shut down her quiverfull-oriented publication and cease and desist all actions against her husband. She refuses, is ex-communicated by the church (a Calvary Chapel), and leaves the movement. She then successfully sues the church (this part is a little fuzzy IMO), remarries and becomes a feminist activist who believes in the goddess rather than an angry male god. Additional input and narration by Kathryn Joyce, the awesomely awesome author of The Quiverfull Movement.

Again, I'm glad this woman got out, but she seems a little oblivious to the long-term damage caused by her beliefs. That could totally be because of the focus of the interview, though.

What happened to her other kids?

I'd like to hear about her older kids, too. There is a picture of her with her older children, current husband & the 2 kids she has with him, so it appears that she has a relationship with her kids from the previous marriage.

I was surprised to see that she was in an interracial marriage. I live in the south where many conservatives, especially older folks, don't believe in interracial marriage due to the couple being "unequally yolked," (Bible verse reference) which I think is nonsense and just a justification for being prejudiced. Interestingly enough, most of these same people would not be against say an Asian & Caucasian relationship; I've only heard them being against black+white couples. It is also considered wrong to have children who are half black/half white due to the difficulty of being interracial in our society....you know, the society that considers being "unequally yolked" as blasphemous. These attitudes are evolving, but very slowly within the religious right groups.

One of her daughters committed suicide a few years ago. She suffered from an eating disorder and alcoholism.

I used to read her blog back when the Duggars moved beyond the specials and got a regular show. IIRC she seemed to still have a relationship with all her children, though she never got into specifics about their lives.

Do you have a link to the blog ?

I don't remember if it's the same blog I read back then, but google gave me this:

womensspace.wordpress.com

She goes by Heart. She is (or used to be) pretty notorious online...she identifies as a radical feminist and "political lesbian. Around the time I stopped reading her, there was am outcry over a post on her forum where someone said she'd wished she'd aborted her teen son because he watched porn. Heart defended her and things got ugly. I think Anonymous got involved.

Wow. I did wonder if she simply exchanged one form of extremism (quiverfull) for another. And I say that as a feminist myself, but she pinged my radar as a potentially dangerously radical person--hence my curiosity and concern about her older children. I feared they may have been damaged in ways that could not be repaired, if her issues were intrinsic/personality related rather than extrinsic and situational. I'm very sad to hear about the suicide, but honestly not surprised :(

I thought the same thing about the exchange of extremisms. As a fundamentalist she had a bit of a leadership role with her magazine, preaching and encouraging others to live way outside the mainstream. Then she got out and now writes from the other side. Some people just seem to have a need to swim against the current at all times.

Yeah, she kind of reminds me of Vyckie Garrison in that way.

IIRC, her second marriage has also since failed. I haven't found a lot of information on how her children fared, which is probably for the best. However, she always seemed to me to seek out extremist beliefs of one variety or another. She exchanged Quiverful and Patriarchy for radicalism of another form and variety.

Anyone heard from Vyckie lately? I can't make myself look at her blog.

Is Cheryl Lindsey Seelhoff (subject of the documentary) divorced from Rick now? Her blog says she's been a single mom since 2008. Many things on the internet indicate she was still in a relationship with Rick in 2007, but I can't find anything stating explicitly that she had divorced him other than the single mom comment. Supposedly, before 2008, she was pretending to be a lesbian feminist in her blog while still in a heterosexual relationship. I don't know if this is an accurate portrayal or not. She identifies as a political lesbian, whatever that is supposed to mean.
