Anyone offended by misogynist rap lyrics?

Okay, I finally did some googling. Here's an example of the type of really offensive stuff I'm talking about.: this is by someone named Necro. I don't know if I've heard the exact song, but definitely similar. Could definitely be triggering, so be warned.

[Hook]

You fuckin whore

You're such a whore

You fuckin whore

You fuckin whore

You're such a whore

You fuckin whore

I might not buy you shit, but I'll never deny you dick

Suck on my cock until your tongue is too tired to lick

[Necro]

I'm a sex legend

Fuckin you like I injected ephedrine

Pump your ass like a jackhammer connected to your rectum

Nothing's affecting my erection

Unless you're in need of dexatrim and your complexion is infected skin

I wanna hear confessions, bitch, obsessions

Lessons, questions, sexual suggestions

Would you like some refreshments? Some breath mints?

Cause I plan on tonguing you while molesting your intestines

You contain the essence of the profession

Known as prostitution my first impression is you'd be excellent

Your estrogen is like mescaline

If you're not douching your twat, smells like pollution a pestilent specimen

Necro is smooth especially when making the move

On you removing your clothes whether or not you approve

Don't feel aggression after the molesting

I'd have Gwyneth Paltrow eating Alpo

My deception is for fucking (overlaps into the chorus)

[Hook]

[Necro]

You're exotic lookin

Your twat is hot like narcotics cookin

You should use your body for hookin

Your pussy is like a spot in Brooklyn

New York is full of vagina predators

For fetishes for sluts with pedicures

You're naked bitch

Smack your pussy lubricate it with spit

I'm rapin your clit

You're making faces like you're taking a shit

Sexual narcissist

Nibbling where your cartilage is

Sucking your pussy for juices like oranges

Stenchin like the deceased in the morgue

The second I walk into the door

I can smell your pussy like a police dog

Let's see how many dicks we can fit in Mariah

Rub her cunt fast like a cave man rubbing sticks for fire

The plan is to shove you into the back of a van

Bitches screaming with high pitches like a Michael Jackson fan

Better yet like Michael himself

That fucking faggot pedophile should get beaten to death with a spiked belt

(overlaps into the chorus)

[Hook]

[Necro]

If I had Donald Trump's cash I'd have a plump ass

Everyday, sucking um and fucking um with no scumbags

Because I'm a scumbag and yo bitch you're a cunt rag

A fuckin dumb hag with fun bags

Every shit is perverse

When the minister squirts

Put on one of your miniskirts

And I'm-a fuck you in a church

How can you get a bitch?

An alcoholic beverage

Is the leverage in getting a bitch to undress and show you a crevice

This will never miss it's definite

You want to touch the flesh of a tit?

Listen to this professional shit

Put something in her drink that she could digest in a sip

Something that'll dissolve quick so she won't think she's being tricked

There's narcotics that will make a female feel erotic

Have her sucking cock like she's a demonic psychotic

Your relationship starts off platonic

Next thing you know she's on it

Brainwashed

Can someone explain why they think Taylor Swift writes misogynist music? I find her music annoying and vapid but not offensive.

Honestly, I'm offended by the misogynist lyrics that are pervasive in just about every genre of popular music. Which is why I basically don't listen to the radio unless I have no choice. I listen to audiobooks in the car. I'm not sure it's fair to single out rap, because plenty of female pop singers spew out ridiculous anti-feminist bullshit.

In fact, in some ways I'm more offended by the pop music put out by women that is anti-feminist. Snoop Lion nee Dogg doesn't pretend he's celebrating womanhood. Ice-T never claimed he was a feminist. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and their ilk churn out music with lyrics that obsess over hetero-normative relationships where women are either victims or shrews or passive sex toys for the enjoyment of men. Their images are crafted to appeal to men. And while they sing songs about titillating boys with their bi-curiosity under the guise of celebrating their sexuality, they're claiming to be pro-feminism and all about girl power. It's insulting.

What Vex said except I haven't given up on the radio yet (though I am tempted).

I don't agree with that tumblr on one aspect, which is about people singing "in character" and how that's still misogynistic. Of course, if you repeatedly write misogynist songs and then claim "Oh, that's just me singing in the voice of this imaginary character" people are going to start to wonder how close you and the character really are, and if you're not, actually, one and the same. But singing songs in the voice of someone who is not you doesn't automatically make you the person you're singing about.

Another song...by the Rolling Stones...

Under my thumb

The squirmin' dog who's just had her day

Under my thumb

A girl who has just changed her ways

It's down to me, yes it is

The way she does just what she's told

Down to me, the change has come

She's under my thumb

Ah, ah, say it's alright

Under my thumb

A siamese cat of a girl

Under my thumb

She's the sweetest, hmmm, pet in the world

It's down to me

The way she talks when she's spoken to

Down to me, the change has come,

She's under my thumb

Also...Robin Thicke with Pharrell

now he was close, tried to domesticate you

But you're an animal, baby, it's in your nature

Just let me liberate you

Hey, hey, hey

You don't need no papers

Hey, hey, hey

That man is not your maker

And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl

I know you want it

I know you want it

I know you want it

You're a good girl

Can't let it get past me

You're far from plastic

Talk about getting blasted

Tracy Byrd...

We don't really wanna take you to dinner

At some fancy restaurant

The only reason we do is 'cause we know it leads to

The one thing that we all want

Well, that's the truth about men

Yeah, that's the truth about guys

We'd rather play guitars and work on cars

Than work on the problems in our lives

An' though we might say it to you

Every now and then

We ain't wrong, we ain't sorry

And it's probably gonna happen again

Well, if you want to know what we're all thinkin'

It's nothing too complex

It's just somethin' cold for drinkin'

And a whole lot of s-e-x

A Woman's Place by Gilbert Sullivan

Beastie Boys...

Girls, to do the dishes

Girls, to clean up my room

Girls, to do the laundry

Girls, and in the bathroom

Girls, that's all I really want is girls

Two at a time, I want girls

With new wave hairdos, I want girls

I ought to whip out my, girls, girls, girls, girls, girls

Brad Paisley...

Well love makes a man do some things he ain't proud of

And in a weak moment I might walk your sissy dog, hold your purse at the mall

But remember, I'm still a guy

I'll pour out my heart

Hold your hand in the car

Write a love song that makes you cry

Then turn right around knock some jerk to the ground

'Cause he copped a feel as you walked by

I can hear you now talking to your friends

Saying, "Yeah girls he's come a long way"

From dragging his knuckles and carrying a club

And building a fire in a cave

But when you say a backrub means only a backrub

Then you swat my hand when I try

Well, what can I say at the end of the day

Honey, I'm still a guy...

These days there's dudes getting facials

Manicured, waxed and botoxed

With deep spray-on tans and creamy lotiony hands

You can't grip a tacklebox

With all of these men lining up to get neutered

It's hip now to be feminized

I don't highlight my hair

I've still got a pair

Yeah honey, I'm still a guy

Oh my eyebrows ain't plucked

There's a gun in my truck

Oh thank God, I'm still a guy

Just to name a couple. There are several more non-rap sexist songs, but that'll take forever to put them all on here.

This is the first I hear of Necro, so he must not be big. I can see why he's not big, though every once in awhile a song not unlike that in content makes it big. Necro sounds like Robin Thicke meets David Banner.

Going OT here: Everyone freaked out when David Banner's "Play" came out, but, besides his icky choice of words to describe PIV sex, I didn't see what was so wrong with it. It completely baffles me that people are made more uncomfortable by a song about female pleasure than by songs about murder.

Also, she tends to see men as objects, so I don't see how that is any better than when men do it to women. Like referring to them as her toys that other women shouldn't play with, as if the man belongs to her, even though she's not dating him or anything or whatever. People are people and they do not belong to you just because you think they should. That's like saying you love a ferrari and even those someone else bought it, you still want it and claim it belongs to you and only you and slam the owner for supposedly taking what was yours though it was never actually yours. Only using the car reference because she calls men toys, so used an adult toy of sorts. Just as weird and wtf even when you put an actual object into the equation, so doing that with humans is just wrong. Seriously, lady needs to get over her unrequited love and break-up songs that slut-shame and objectify other humans. It is old and boring and just plain wrong. Never was a Swift fan though.

Not sure I agree with that blanket assessment of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

I see their outfits as costumes. Some of the imagery is sexual, but it's not just about being sexually appealing - there's an over-the-top, campy quality to their looks.

Perry's Firework and Roar have become anthems.

Do you really think that Lady Gaga's Born this Way is just about titillating boys with her bi-curiosity? That' not what I got from it at all.

pity, no? i remember putting on some femmes for old times sake and nearly falling on my chair. No! I loved them! So. Very. Sad. Coupled with a : WTF? How did I miss *that*?

sigh.

My list of "music I loved as a kid and still dig now" has been pruned very, very lean. damn you, evolving political consciousness.

I don't screen my music particularly for political correctness. Some of the waaaaay offensive stuff, yea, I'll skip through, or tell a younger relative to turn down, but otherwise I just enjoy it for what it is, entertainment.

I like Katy Perry. I don't see why she shouldn't sing about sex if she wants. And I like the campiness as well. It would be pretty monotonous if people only sang about political causes or day to day life or healthy relationships.

Although I do find that rap lyrics are more often explicitly misogynistic and offensive, there are a couple of rap songs that are wrong on every conceivable level, that I I listen to because they are also really catchy and funny.

I'm not sure about Lady Gaga, but Katy Perry has gone on record in a magazine interview and explicitly stated that she isn't a feminist. Also the lyrics to Hot and Cold are pretty sketch

"You change your mind

Like a girl changes clothes.

Yeah, you, PMS

Like a bitch

I would know"

I have a pretty big hate-on for people who exacerbate the pms stereotype for attention (Not saying that pms pain and symptoms aren't real-they are and I've experienced them). It just leads to assholes not taking women seriously when the women's actions are perceived as "bitchy" or "hormone-induced".

Like Ariel said, Katy Perry is explicitly NOT a feminist. I wasn't talking about Lady Gaga flaunting her bisexuality, I was talking about Katy. I'm sorry, but 'I Kissed A Girl' is not a song about Katy coming to grips with her sexuality and taking charge. It's a song about bisexuality because it's hot when girls make out and guys love it.

I don't care if her costumes are costumes, but please don't try and tell me that when she shoots whipped cream out of her bra that it's not sexual imagery. I agree Gaga's costumes are generally not meant to be fetish fuel but Katy's sure are.

I don't care that her music is an anthem for some people. I don't like Lady Gaga, but at least she can compose and write her own lyrics and play several instruments. Katy Perry has no discernible musical talent. I believe Gaga might well be bisexual, but I don't believe Katy is for a minute, which makes 'I kissed a girl' particularly egregious. It's offensive to me as a woman and as a lesbian.

Here are some random lyrics from her songs:

I know a place

California girls

We're unforgettable

Daisy Dukes

Bikinis on top

Sun-kissed skin

So hot

We'll melt your popsicle

Oooooh Oh Oooooh

Reducing women to objects. It's clearly written to appeal to guys - when she says 'we'll melt your popsicle' it's a terrible euphemism for getting guys hard. Nowhere in the song does she mention any attributes other than skimpy clothes and good looks. She talks about how the girls are fit, tanned, fine and fierce, but never smart, or talented, or anything else even vaguely empowering. She does talk about erections, though!

Here's another gem from a song called 'Ur So Gay'

[CHORUS]

You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys

No you don’t even like

No you don’t even like

No you don’t even like boys

You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys

No you don’t even like

No you don’t even like

No you don’t even like…

She's not actually calling the guy gay as the chorus makes clear, she's using it in the pejorative sense. Disgusting.

From E.T:

Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me

Infect me with your love and

Fill me with your poison

Take me, ta-ta-take me

Wanna be a victim

Ready for abduction

That's a terrible message to send to women, especially the young girls who inexplicably look up to her.

Almost all Katy Perry's songs are addressed to men if you take the time to actually read the lyrics. She has said she's not a feminist and she grew up fundie lite. She's disrespectful to women, to gay people, and to the men who she tries to pander to. She might not write those songs, but she gets to choose which ones to sing. She could sing songs about her strength as a woman, she could sing to the girls who admire her and tell them to be strong, independent women. She doesn't. She can wear silly, campy costumes without them being sexual or sexy.

I thing Gaga is a poor role model because she treats people terribly, but at least she doesn't see 'feminist' and 'gay' as pejorative terms. To me Katy Perry is indefensible.

I was really turned off a couple years ago by the imagery in some of Lady Gaga's music videos. I interpreted Paparazzi as glorifying violence against women and Bad Romance seemed like some weird non-consensual submissive woman/ domineering man fantasy. (However, I will admit that I really admire her voice.)

Katy Perry's songs are catchy as hell, but when viewing her work as a whole, I find her really irritating from a political perspective. I have no problem if cutesy, pink, child-like, hyper-(stereotypically)-feminine and hypersexualized is how you choose to express yourself on a particular day or throughout your entire career as a performer. (Sure, it's problematic given the cultural context it exists in, but feminism needs to affirm all of women's choices, not just the ones that transgress social norms, and sexuality as a performance tool isn't inherently bad.) But the thing is, this act is boring to me as a consumer. The exaggeratedness of her image places her perfectly within the cookie cutter in which society expects women to fit, and she just replicates that over and over, with the occasional shallow song about how special she or the listener is. The only time she deviated from that was Last Friday Night, and I just didn't like that song and didn't find the video in the least bit entertaining. That stuff doesn't make her not feminist - just an annoyingly conformist performer, as far as I'm concerned.

On the other hand, E.T. and You're So Gay happened. If she fully understands the social implications of those songs' lyrics and still stands by them...I kind of agree with her that she's not a feminist.

Lady Gaga does problematic shit, too, but I find her work entertaining because it challenges social norms. Like the blue armpit hair.

Both are catchy, though, so I listen to both. I fully admit to allowing myself to be entertained by stuff with problematic content. You can enjoy something while analysing it. Hell, I think we should expose ourselves to that stuff (if it's not going to upset/trigger us, of course). If nothing else, it's important to know what the kids are listening to. My selection criteria for music is pretty much the same as Mrs S2004's. Skip the really offensive stuff, but otherwise I listen to it if it's catchy. Bonus points if it's political, though. Hence Tom Morello on my speakers right now.

I totally respect people who can divorce themselves from moral issues with an artist/song/film/whatever, but I find it very hard to enjoy content that comes from people I have issues with. That's not to say I don't sometimes enjoy stuff from people I dislike, but in general it interferes with my ability to enjoy media. Even if I didn't have issues with a lot of the current crop of popular artists it's not music I really would enjoy anyway. I have pretty diverse taste, but 2000's pop is not really something I enjoy. 90's eurodance, though, is totally my secret shame.

I do enjoy parodies of current popular music though. There are a few 'We Can't Stop' parodies that I can't stop listening to.

I sort of like Lady Gaga, but it's because she seems to be doing her own thing. A strange thing, but a thing. Whereas Katy Perry I dislike, and I listen to some of the tackiest music known to man and enjoy it unashamedly.

Her music's just bland - like stuffing endless chunks of white supermarket bread in your gob. At some point, you're at least going to want some tomato sauce on it, if not mustard.

I like some shamefully crappy stuff, so no judgment from me when people inexplicably enjoy things that are just bad. There's no helping what we enjoy sometimes. I inexplicably liked Work Bitch.

I've always found Lady Gaga to be enjoyably bad, overall. A lot of her costumes are so strange and bizarre, they're usually worth a look, and her music is pretty good. I find that I can't take her seriously, though, even when she professes to sometimes go for a more serious vibe in her work. She once admitted in an Entertainment Weekly interview as an up-an-coming artist that she will literally do anything to get attention.

Vex, I have nearly 2,000 songs on my ipod, over half of them 90s Eurodance. :D And I enjoy them so much, I can honestly say I'm not a bit ashamed.
