Uninsured fundies and Obamacare

A lady called in to C-SPAN, complaining how her neighbors will never be able to afford the premiums for their fourteen kids, both now and when they all turn twenty-six. I immediately thought "she just doesn't get it," then I wondered if her neighbors were a family we've discussed here.

I'm totally for a universal healthcare system, and do realize there is no such thing as a perfect system. The issues of services covered and waiting times aren't really issues for me, just questions really. I definitely don't think of universal healthcare as ebil socialism like many other American's do.

What are they doing now for health insurance?

And there is no law that says you HAVE to cover your children until they are 26. Only that you CAN, if you want to, and the insurance has to allow you to. In our situation, my kids are better off hitting the exchanges. (We will double check, of course. I am talking about adding on to the fiance's insurance once we get married.)

Actually it's up to age 26 that your kids can stay on your plan, and they don't have to be in school, or even be your dependent. They can be married, working, live across the country and be parents themselves and still stay on their parents plan.

One of the big problems I see with the acceptance of Obamacare are all the "exceptions" that are part of the law. My husband is retired military and we are covered under Tricare (military HMO). At age 21/23 (not 26), is when Tricare Young Adult begins. It costs $152-$180 per month. Eligibility ends with marriage. I wonder what other groups of people have different rules...ones that favor the individual and ones that favor the gov't/employer.

My husband watches Fox news every morning  I hate it, but I do "learn" some things. This morning was talk about the two main provisions that the GOP oppose: 1) lawmakers and staff getting subsidies for healthcare 2) requiring individual mandate now, but delaying employer mandate for one year. Both were changed after the law was originally passed. There are probably others that were not reported, but these seem like no brainers for me

And...not surprisingly, the Washington state health plan finder website is DOWNNNNNN! On Day #1! Way to go, Washington!

In Cali, the public service ads rolled out exactly on schedule. I have no need to sign up, in fact I can't, so I don't know how the website traffic is going.

That's pretty much to be expected when you are going to have a massive influx of traffic all at once. It's like trying to call the IRS on April 15th.

We're in the bracket of needing health insurance or paying the penalty. We've never been able to afford health insurance and don't really use it (midwives, chiropractors, etc all take cash) so we haven't thought much of it. Not sure what we will do yet, I don't think we will be able to afford any plan with our current budget so we might have to take the penalty... or we might qualify for Medicaid, but I am not sure what all goes into that. We probably will never have to use it (or I hope, anyway!!) but I wonder about how much information they want, too. Not sure what we are going to do yet....
