I'm going to guess that much of it isn't true. If he's lying about something dramatic like his girlfriend dying in a horrible accident but she actually put a RO on him because of DV, then there's a good chance he's also lying about his dramatic past. He probably grew up with his grandparents. His mother may've been a drug addict or alcoholic. The rest is embellishment. I'd put money on it.
