Miss Kansas had a tattoo visible in the swimsuit competition. Sorry to all FJ ers with tats but that screams trailer trash to many. The new Miss America will use her prize money to go to med school. I hope Vanessa Williams has her phone number and has talked to her about dealing with the evil in American society.

People in my neck of the woods lump all people from the middle east and India as Arabs. They are just jealous that people from the middle east and India are more successful because they work harder. I'm only speaking for my tiny neck of the woods, not the U.S. in general. In fact my family doctor is from India, and feel that I get better care and empathy from her than some of the white doctors in town.

Of course Stinking Lousewife has an opinion. She is not amused.

I didn't watch the Miss America contest. Just not my thing. But the New Miss America seems pretty cool. And her Bollywood costume is gorgeous!

From the comment section of stinking housewife's blog

"Jane continues:

Yeah, but those are not part of traditional Indian values. Hinduism teaches that being born is a punishment. Your job is to accept your lot in life, however awful. Whatever suffering comes your way, you earned it because of your past life misdeeds. Next time around could be worse. There’s no guarantee you’ll even come back as a person.

If you tried to imagine the farthest thing from traditional American values, traditional Hinduism would do."

So the big bad brown people have it all wrong and are ruining America even when you have to assume that they believe things they don't and keep trying to make them act in ways that they don't? Or we could just take the same quote and switch out a few words...

"Jane continues:

Yeah, but those are not part of traditional Indian Christian values. HinduismMy form of Christianity teaches that being born female is a punishment joy. Your job is to accept your lot in life, however awful stressful. Whatever suffering comes your way, you earned it because of your past life misdeeds Jesus died for you. Next time around could be worse. There’s no guarantee you’ll even come back as a person end up in heaven.

If you tried to imagine the farthest thing from traditional American values, traditional Hinduism my version of Christianity would do."

This is the most publicity Miss America has had since Heather Whitestone. The Miss America pageant should choose a beautiful, blonde, woman from "The Heartland" next year, but should be an out and proud lesbian. A Lesbian Miss America in 2015!

That reminds me of Miss Congeniality. One of my favorite movies. "Can we say lesbians?" "You got a problem with that?"

I'm not wild about tattoos, nor do I have one... but one tattoo (visible only in swimwear) screams trailer trash? Dang, tell us how you really feel. :pink-shock:

Not my personal opinion. Just saying that one can find fault with Miss Kansas if one is a bigot.

Wow, "trailer trash" is a really offensive phrase. I think tattoos are really mainstream in all socio-economic groups now anyway.

From thethinkinghousewife:

Miss Davuluri says she has always seen herself as an American first. But this does not appear to be true, nor should it be true, given that most Indian immigrants naturally feel a strong connection to India. In the talent competition, Davuluri did a Bollywood fusion dance (I did not see the pageant) and her comments afterward suggest that she is proud that the pageant chose her as a symbol of “diversity.†In other words, she is proud that she is not a white American. “I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity,†she said. “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.â€

Why does feeling connected to your cultural heritage make you un-American? My very white grandparents are actual tea partiers and very pro-America, but they're also very proud of their Dutch heritage and go to various festivals and such celebrating it. One has immigrant parents but the other's family has been here for a few generations, marrying other Dutch Americans (my dad broke this trend, which his parents weren't thrilled about), attending Dutch churches and celebrating Dutch holidays, and living in towns that even today still have street signs in Dutch. Oh right, they're white, so it's okay. If minorities do it they're anti-American and failing to assimilate.

Why am I not surprised that Stinking Lousewife is spewing hateful nonsense, pretending to sound sophisticated but utterly devoid of logic?

The new Miss America is not only beautiful, but she's brilliant and plans to be a doctor. Somehow, this is bad and shows that she doesn't embrace American values.

Yes, of course she's praising diversity. Wouldn't it make sense for her to be saying, "thank you for recognizing that Americans come from all different countries and cultures, but that doesn't change the fact that we are all Amercan?"

Oh, and guess what? Folks in India seemed pretty accepting of Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She initially turned down the opportunity to become Prime Minister, but subsequently became president of the Congresss Party.

Really not a fan of these types of competitions but she sounds like a pretty interesting person.

"During her year as Miss America she will serve as spokesperson for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) this year as she travels to Washington, D.C., to work with the Department of Education," according to a Miss America statement.

She also is passionate about healthy lifestyles after battling obesity and bulimia when she was younger.

Davuluri's platform was "Celebrating Diversity Through Cultural Competency." For the talent portion of the competition, she performed classic Indian dances fused with Bollywood moves.'

Bollywood movies are a total middle of the night love I have.

I remember watching Bollywood movies with a friend of mine all through college. She would translate every once in a while but said she really wouldn't have to, since they were pretty self explanatory. It was a great way to spend a weekend night in. Popcorn, wine coolers and Bollywood. :)

But yeah, let's not have a Miss America who actually represents diversity (you know, the whole point of America), or math & science (instruments of the devil). Forget about healthy living when the First Lady got lambasted for promoting drinking water (or Socialism Juice - thank you Bill Maher). It's like promoting healthy eating habits is a direct attack on the heartland or something.

Chiming in on Dutch Americans - Dutch heritage is a HUGE deal to many Dutch Americans (enough generations down from immigration that they've stopped counting) and I've personally met many Dutch Americans who were more "attached" to their cultural heritage than American people of color I've met. Some of them (young, insulated types were the ones I knew best) were even kinda "racist", if you will, towards other white, non-Dutch Americans. Not to say that feeling a connection to your ethnic or ancestral nation's background is bad, but just that there's a bunch of blond-haired, blue-eyed types that do it too, and do it more than some Americans of non-European descent.

I totally agree. I am second generation American. My granparents on both sides were born in Germany. Growing up in Cincinnati (huge German population), I was very connected with my German heritage and we celebrated it. I guess that's okay, though, since we (and most German-Americans) are white.

America is a melting pot and not only a white European melting pot.

So, has there been a similar freak-out after "America's Got Talent" picked a non-blonde-white-European-heritage person (trying to avoid spoilers) as the winner last night? (I'm not an AGT follower, I only watched for Josh Groban & Luke Bryant, so I'm not in the loop.)

Good lord, all of this fuss over a damn beauty pageant? I stopped watching these kinds of pageants a long, long time ago. They are basically just tits and ass pageants operating under the pretense that the winners are chosen because of their intelligence and talent. The only time anybody gives a rat's ass how intelligent these ladies are is when they put their foot in their mouth or some kind of controversy or scandal arises.

An Indian American won...so fucking what? The judges liked her, and that's all that matters. The rest of the world needs to get over it already or just stop watching. Be assured that the days of white women only winning these pageants are long gone, and have been for some time (a good thing). Chicks on the Right can exit stage left. I sense a lot of jealousy and not just over the Indian American winning.

ETA: spelling mistakes
